  • Metadata standard is very important element to describe a digital resource in the records lifecycle. Metadata standard is influenced by the purpose and content of tasks that are performed to a resource. But it does not reflect a task-centric viewpoint to cover the whole records-lifecycle because metadata is defined and designed from a resource-centric viewpoint. In other words, to cover the whole records-lifecycle using metadata, it is necessary to properly select and combine metadata property from a task-centric viewpoint. Therefore, we proposed a task-centric metadata application profile that can combine and select appropriate metadata properties according to requirements and tasks performed on resource.

  • Until now, many metadata registries have been built in various fields and the metadata registries were built based on ISO/IEC 11179 which is the international standard for metadata management. However, their management systems do not fully support various and useful tools to easily and systematically manage the metadata registries. In this paper, we describe the metadata registry management system we designed and implemented. The implemented metadata registry management system provide many useful tools for efficient and easy metadata management. Finally, the developed system is also based on the international standard, ISO/IEC11179. Therefore, we can apply it to other fields for building and managing metadata registries.

  • The total number of scholarly publications grows day by day, making it necessary to explore and use simple yet effective ways to expose their metadata. Schema.org supports adding structured metadata to web pages via markup, making it easier for data providers but also for search engines to provide the right search results. Bioschemas is based on the standards of schema.org, providing new types, properties and guidelines for metadata, i.e., providing metadata profiles tailored to the Life Sciences domain. Here we present our proposed contribution to Bioschemas (from the project "Biotea"), which supports metadata contributions for scholarly publications via profiles and web components. Biotea comprises a semantic model to represent publications together with annotated elements recognized from the scientific text; our Biotea model has been mapped to schema.org following Bioschemas standards.

  • During over decades, metadata on spatial data have been developed, and they have been widely applied at the national and international metadata standards such as file structure, format, and data model. However, in the web 2.0 paradigm toward user participation and openness, sources and contents of geospatial products are also diversified, not being limited to well-organized and structured data sets or databases. Especially, software products in both open source software and commercially packaged software are considered into important resources in the geospatial domain. But there are no reports or studies regarding software metadata from the side of software engineering or information technology, till now. The motivation of this study is based on practical needs to build search engine in the intelligent geospatial web. Brief review on current metadata standards is presented, and necessity for software metadata is discussed as well as related works. Basic elements, initially considered, of software metadata are presented. This work is the first attempt for software metadata, although it just covers geospatial software products. Further practical works to meet industrial demands need to actual applications of software metadata.

  • It is not easy to access to the required data from the Web by using search engines because there are too many data selected and they do not provide enough information related to the corresponding data. Metadata is data about data. It includes information about data itself and contents of data as well. Users can acquire enough information about the corresponding data and access to the required data exactly using metadata, and therefore the data usability will be increased. In this paper, several metadata technologies and metadata models that are already in process of standardization or adopted as standards are analyzed, and the SeriCore Metadata Model for documents such as papers, project reports, technical reports, abstracts, and manuals, and graphic images that are in the field of science technologies on the Web is proposed. The SeriCore Metadata Management System that can generate, store, and retrieve metadata effectively is designed and implemented based on the SeriCore Metadata Model.

  • As most of metadata have been handled on restricted applications, we need a same metadata in order to represent a same video data. However, these metadata make problems that the same video data should be supported by the same metadata. Therefore, in this paper, we extend the Dublin core elements to support the metadata which can solve the problems. The proposed video data representation is managed by the extended metadata of Doblin core model, by using the information of structure, content and manipulation of video data. The thirteen temporal relationship operators are reduced to the six temporal relationship operators by using a dummy shot temporal transformation relationship. The reduced six temporal relationship operators through excluding reverse temporal relationship not only maintain a consistency of representation between a metadata and a video data, but also transform n-ary temporal relationship to binary relationship on shots. We show that the proposed metadata model can be applied to representing and retrieving on various applications as equivalent as the same structure.

  • This study is to develope the structures and the elements of the metadata for harvesting, management and preservation of a valuable web resources in the web archiving. For this study, we investigated the available metadata in the web archiving and surveyed the requirements of web archiving process. And we analyzed the characteristics of web resources. Also, this study was used a based on the ISO 14721 OAIS Reference Model. Finally, to share the metadata elements among the web archiving system, this study considered the interoperability for the exchange of the metadata. Based on the result, this study designed four structures of the metadata and defined the 28 core metadata elements for the web archiving.

  • B2B registries are information systems to registrate B2B related business information such as companies' profiles, business documents, business processes, services and to provide query facilities to find information about potential business partners. In this study, we focus on the design of the repository for B2B business processes. In this paper, a metadata ontology is designed to registrate B2B business processes. In practice, there are several competitive business process definition languages such as ebXML BPSS (Business Process Specification Schema), WSBPEL (Web Service Business Process Execution Language), BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation), and so on. In order to registrate business processes based on different representation frameworks, the proposed metadata ontology consist of three layers, common metadata, language-specific metadata, and interrelationship metadata. To implement the proposed metadata ontology using ebXML registry, metadata mapping scheme to ebRIM (ebXML Registry Information Model) are also suggested.

  • The goal of Ubiquitous Sensor Network(USN) environments is to provide users high quality services based on a variety of sensors. In this environment, sensor devices, sensor nodes and sensor networks are heterogeneous and have various characteristics. Therefore it is important for interoperability to define a metadata for describing USN resources. The OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium) proposes SensorML(Sensor Model Language) as a standard language for modeling sensors. However, SensorML provides a framework for describing a processing model among sensors rather than describing information of sensors. Therefore, to describe a USN metadata is not main purposes of SensorML. This paper defines a USN metadata which describes information about sensor device, sensor node, and sensor network. Also the paper proposes a method for efficiently storing and searching the USN metadata and implements a USN metadata management system based on our method. We show that our metadata management system is reasonable for managing the USN metadata through performance evaluation. Our USN metadata keeps the interoperability in USN environments because the metadata is designed on SensorML. The USN metadata management system can be used directly for a USN middleware or USN application.
