A Meta-learning Approach for Building Multi-classifier Systems in a GA-based Inductive Learning Environment (유전 알고리즘 기반 귀납적 학습 환경에서 다중 분류기 시스템의 구축을 위한 메타 학습법)

  • The paper proposes a meta-learning approach for building multi-classifier systems in a GA-based inductive learning environment. In our meta-learning approach, a classifier consists of a general classifier and a meta-classifier. We obtain a meta-classifier from classification results of its general classifier by applying a learning algorithm to them. The role of the meta-classifier is to evaluate the classification result of its general classifier and decide whether to participate into a final decision-making process or not. The classification system draws a decision by combining classification results that are evaluated as correct ones by meta-classifiers. We present empirical results that evaluate the effect of our meta-learning approach on the performance of multi-classifier systems.

A Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of Project Approach in Early Childhood Education (프로젝트 접근법의 효과에 대한 메타분석)

  • This study used meta-analysis to synthesize the effectiveness of the project approach. After reviewing 51 studies, we analyzed the effect size of 119 articles published between 1990 and 2002 using SAS 8.2 program. The grand average of the project approach effectiveness was 1.03. This implies that the experimental group that employing the project approach is more effective than control group by the 35 percentile. We also found that the project approach is more effective for preschool children group (1.21, 89%) than for the elementary school children group (0.88, 81%). Specific variables regarding the effectiveness of the project approach were analyzed and its consequences were discussed.

Sustainable Closed-loop Supply Chain Model using Hybrid Meta-heuristic Approach: Focusing on Domestic Mobile Phone Industry (혼합형 메타휴리스틱 접근법을 이용한 지속가능한 폐쇄루프 공급망 네트워크 모델: 국내 모바일폰 산업을 중심으로)

  • In this paper, a sustainable closed-loop supply chain (SCLSC) network model is proposed for domestic mobile phone industry. Economic, environmental and social factors are respectively considered for reinforcing the sustainability of the SCLSC network model. These three factors aim at minimizing total cost, minimizing total amount of CO2 emission, and maximizing total social influence resulting from the establishment and operation of facilities at each stage of the SCLSC network model. Since they are used as each objective function in modeling, the SCLSC network model can be a multi-objective optimization problem. A mathematical formulation is used for representing the SCLSC network model and a hybrid meta-heuristic approach is proposed for efficiently solving it. In numerical experiment, the performance of the proposed hybrid meta-heuristic approach is compared with those of conventional meta-heuristic approaches using some scales of the SCLSC network model. Experimental results shows that the proposed hybrid meta-heuristic approach outperforms conventional meta-heuristic approaches.

Pairwise pseudolikelihood approach for adjusting selection bias in meta-analysis (메타분석의 선택 편향 보정을 위한 쌍별 유사가능도 접근법)

  • Meta-analysis provides a way of integrating several independent studies of interest. Since small studies with statistically significant results are more likely to be published, publication bias, which is a special case of selection bias, often occurs in meta analysis. Conditional likelihood and weighted estimating equation have been proposed to deal with publication bias, but they require to specify a correct selection probability model. In contrast, the pairwise pseudolikelihood approach can correct publication bias without fully specifying the correct selection probability model, but its performance in meta-analysis was not investigated. In this paper, we perform a numerical study about whether the pairwise pseudolikelihood approach is effective for solving publication bias arising from typical meta-analysis settings.

A Meta-Analytic Review of the Effectiveness of the Science Writing Heuristic Approach on Academic Achievement in Turkey

  • The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach is described as an immersive argument-based science inquiry focusing particularly on learning through epistemic practices. In the literature, several previous studies indicate how academic achievement is positively influenced by the SWH. In addition to these previous studies, several meta-syntheses of qualitative data have been conducted on this particular topic. With these literatures in mind, a quantitative meta-analysis was conducted with ten studies (N = 724) to examine the effectiveness of the SWH on student achievement in Turkey. To present a thoroughly detailed report, this study also examined the following moderators: grade level, subject area, school location, intervention length, and report source. Overall, this study found that in Turkey, the SWH classrooms performed better in academic achievement tests than traditional lecture-based classrooms. Additionally, the SWH is more likely to be effective regardless of grade levels, subject areas, and school locations.

  • Meta-analysis methods are becoming a central part of research integration in behavioral and medical science studies. The main goal of the meta-analysis is combining the quantitative findings from several studies which address the same research problem and is sharing conclusions in a published report. The purpose of this research is to develop meta-analysis approach to evaluate effectiveness of instructional program design to improve school-age children's knowledge and understanding of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). To achieve this purpose, meta-analysis is applied to analyze and synthesize findings for AIDS instructional programs from several prior studies.

Supply Chain Network Model with Disruption Risk: GA-JAYA-FLC Approach (붕괴위험을 고려한 공급망 네트워크 모델: GA-JAYA-FLC 접근법)

  • In this paper, a supply chain network (SCN) model with disruption risk is proposed. Either the disruption of the facilities in each stage of the SCN or the disruption of route between them is considered as the disruption risk in the SCN model. Many conventional studies have considered facility disruption and route disruption separately. However, their disruptions can be occurred simultaneously in real world. This paper proposes the SCN model with facility disruption and route disruption simultaneously. The SCN model is represented as a nonlinear 0-1 programming and solved using a hybrid meta-heuristics approach called GA-JAYA-FLC approach. In numerical experiment, the performance of the GA-JAYA-FLC approach is compared with those of some conventional single and hybrid meta-heuristic approaches using a multi-stage SCN model. Experimental result shows that the GA-JAYA-FLC approach outperforms some conventional single and hybrid meta-heuristic approaches.

The Development of the Meta-Evaluation Criteria for the Accreditation Evaluation System of Engineering Education in Korea (공학교육인증 평가체제의 메타평가 준거 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Meta-Evaluation Criteria which can comprehensively and systematically evaluate and improve the Accreditation Evaluation System for Engineering Education. This will provide useful implications for establishing value, direction, and improvement remedy for Engineering Educations Accreditation System of Korea. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, Meta-Evaluation Criteria was developed to comprehensively and systematically assess and analyze the Accreditation Evaluation System of Engineering Education. The research methodology used to study these subjects: literature review, interviews with experts, Delphi survey (three times), survey, analysis of narrative opinion and secondary source. The results and conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the final Meta-Evaluation Criteria were developed so as to comprehensively and systematically assess and analyze the Accreditation Evaluation System of Engineering Education. The criteria's validity and reliability were also identified. Specific details are as follows: In a draft plan of the Meta-Evaluation Criteria, Meta-Evaluation concept was defined as evaluation on the whole range of Accreditation Evaluation System of Engineering Education. Meta-Evaluation Criteria was designed to be based on a systematic approach and applies the phased approach to the lower component to reflect evaluation's characteristics. Then validity and reliability of the developed draft plan was verified by calculating Content Validity Ratio (CVR), Degree of Consensus, Degree of Convergence and Cronbach's alpha. The final developed Meta-Evaluation Criteria obtaining validity and reliability were composed of 5 evaluation areas (environment, input, performance, result, utilization), 15 evaluation items, 68 evaluation indicators.

  • Since XML (eXtensible Markup Language) was highlighted as an information interchange format, there is an increasing demand for incorporating XML with databases. Most of the approaches are focused on RDB (Relational Databases) because of legacy systems. But these approaches depend on the database system. Countless researches are being focused on DTD (Document Type Definition). However XML Schema is more comprehensive and efficient in many perspectives. We propose a meta-model for XML Schema that is independent of the database. There are three processes to build our meta-model: DOM (Document Object Model) tree analysis, object modeling and storing object into a fixed DB schema using model mapping approach. We propose four mapping rules for object modeling, which conform to the ODMG (Object Data Management Group) 3.0 standard. We expect that the model will be especially useful in building XML-based e-business applications.

A study on developing information and communications technology roadmap through statistical meta analysis (통계적 메타분석을 응용한 미래기술개발로드맵 도출에 관한 연구)

  • As the information and communications market goes more uncertain, foresight activities becomes more important. A number of foresight activities, such as trend analysis, have been used to predict customer needs. However previous studies tend to lack objectivity and systematization. In this study, we suggest a meta analysis methodology which combines both top-down and bottom-up approach in order to systematize the analysis process. Secondly, we applied this approach to ICT market to identify essential future technologies. Based on the result from the meta analysis, we have constructed the future technology roadmap.
