  • From 2014 to 2016 water quality survey results according to the location and depth of Youngrang Lake are as follows: Distribution of dissolved oxygen in the water depth was investigated by the middle section and the downstream 1st, 3rd, 5th, when investigating bottem 1m interval anoxic layer. In organic matter and nutrient concentration distribution COD upstream 2.8 mg/L, middle section 4.2 mg/L downstream 4.1 mg/L, more than two times higher in bottem layer and TP concentrations showed a similar trend with COD, upstream of 0.047 mg/L, middle section was 0.051 mg/L, downstream of 0.059 mg/L. There was a difference in salinity every survey period the average salinity is lowest with 28.5‰ when the second survey. And the highest with 32.1‰ in the fourth investigation. Korean trophic state index($TSI_{KO}$) were showed eutrophic conditions in the middle section and downstream else showed mesotrophic state in the entire period. In order to evaluate the cause of water pollution Youngrang lake, regression analysis of the relationship between salinity and DO, COD, TN, TP, Chl-a results, $R^2$ is from 0.63 to 0.95 Youngrang lake water quality was found to have a close relationship with salinity due to inflow of seawater. As a result, in order to improve the quality of Youngrang lake efficient incorporation of the amount of water through the seawater influent as it is considered the key.

  • Paldang is a river reservoir located in the Midwest of Korea, with a water volume of $244{\cdot}10^6m^3$ and a water surface area of $36.5km^2$. It has eutrophied since the construction of a dam at the end of 1973, and the phosphorus concentration has decreased since 2001. Average hydraulic residence time of the Paldang reservoir is about 10 days during the spring season and 5.6 days as an annual level. The hydraulics and water quality of the reservoir can differ greatly, both temporally and spatially. For the spring period (March to May) in 2001 ~ 2017, the reservoir mean total phosphorus concentration calculated from the budget model based on a plug-flow system (PF) and a continuous stirred-tank reaction system (CSTR) was 13 % higher and 10 % lower than the observed concentration, respectively. A composite flow system (CF) was devised by assuming that the transition zone was plug flow, and that the lacustrine zone was completely mixed. The mean concentration calculated from the model based on CF was not skewed from the observed concentration, and showed just 6 % error. The retention coefficient of the phosphorus derived from the CF was 0.30, which was less than those of the natural lakes abroad or river reservoirs in Korea. The apparent settling velocity of total phosphorus was estimated to be $93m\;yr^{-1}$, which was 6 ~ 9 times higher than those of foreign natural lakes. Assuming CF, the critical load line for the total phosphorus concentration showed a hyperbolic relation to the hydraulic load in the Paldang reservoir. This is different from the previously known straight critical load line. The trophic state of the Paldang reservoir has recently been estimated to be mesotrophic based on the critical-load curve of the phosphorus budget model developed in this study. Although there is no theoretical error in the newly developed budget model, it is necessary to verify the validity of the portion below the inflection point of the critical-load curve afterwards.

  • Akinete germination potential and algal growth potential (AGP) using Anabaena circinalis were investigated September 2014 and March 2015 at the three sites (PD-1, PD-2 and PD-3) of Lake Paldang. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were higher at PD-2 than at PD-1 and PD-3. TSI (TN) values at the three field sites were in the range of 65~85, which were the level of eutrophic or hypereutrophic state. TSI (TP) also showed high values (49~68), which were the level of mesotrophic or eutrophic state. Akinete germination potential was higher at PD-2 with increased nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus), and algal growth potential also increased with nutrient enrichment.

  • BACKGROUND: Most lakes have increased concerns about water pollution due to the inflow of non-point sources caused by human activities. Therefore, the lake water quality survey was conducted in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of lakes and the change of water quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to investigate the physicochemical water quality in Daedong lake, water quality analysis was undertaken from July 2018 to June 2019. Water temperature was ranged from 7.8 to 34.3℃ and pH varied from 6.9 to 10.2. The concentration of Dissolved oxygen, Suspended solid, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were 5.6 ~ 17.2 mg/L, 2.4 ~ 35.3 mg/L, and 4.5 ~ 15.1 mg/L, and 0.9 ~ 2.8 mg/L, respectively. The Total Nitrogen (T-N) concentration ranged from 0.974 ~ 2.126 mg/L, and Total Phosphorus (T-P) concentration ranged from 0.014 ~ 0.057 mg/L. The Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) ranged from 2.7 ~ 37.9 mg/㎥. Through Carlson TSIm assessment using T-P and Chl-a results, evaluating trophic state, Daedong lake was evaluated as mesotrophic. CONCLUSION: Water pollution management plan needs such as nutrient removal technology and nonpoint source management for prevention of eutrophication in Daedong lake.

  • Temporal and spatial characteristics of cyanobacterial communities at the monitoring stations for Harmful Algal Bloom Alert System (HABAS) in Nakdong River and Lake Dukdong were investigated for two years (2013 to 2014). A total of 30 cyanobacterial species from 14 genera were found at the survey stations. Microcystis sp. showed maximum cell density in the total cyanobacterial community in August, 2014 at ND-2 and in September, 2013 at ND-3 station. Lynbya limnetica and Geitlerinema sp., non-target species for alert criteria showed maximum cell density at ND-1 (August, 2013) and Dam station of Lake Dukdong (September, 2014), respectively. Total cyanobacterial cell density and the relative abundance of four target genera (Microcystis, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria spp.) for alert criteria was relatively lower in the mesotrophic Lake Dukdong than at the eutrophic riverine stations of Nakdong River, indicating cyanobacterial density and the RA of target genera is affected by the trophic state of the monitoring stations. Simulating the alert system using phycocyanin concentration as an alert criterion resulted in the longer period of alert issued compared to the period of alert issued using the current criterion of harmful cyanobacterial cell density due to the influence of phycocyanin concentration from non-target cyanobacterial species.

  • To investigate the eutrophication process and pollution characteristics in Paldang Lake, Korea, water and sediment samples were analysed during July 1986~June 1987. The transparency, chlorophyll-a concentration, dissolved oxygen concentration and biochemical oxygen demand in Paldang Lake ranged 0.5~3 m, 3-17 ${\mu}gI^{-1}$, 7.2~12.3 ppm and 0.5~2.3 ppm, respectively. Heterotrophic bacterial number fluctuated seasonally between $3.0{\times}10^{3}/ml and 5.0{\times}10^{5}/ml$ in the water column and between $2{\times}10^{6} and 1{\times}10^{8}$ in the I g dry sediment. Water turbulence and water quality of up-stream seem to play important roles for determining the water quality in Paldang Lake particularly where the hydraulic retention time is so short as about 5 days. The present water quality in Paldang Lake according to the criteria of lake water quality was shown to be between mesotrophic and eutrophic state by secchi depth(O.5 ~ 3 m) and chlorophyll-a concentration (3~17 ${\mu}gI^{-1}$). The distribution of coliform bacteria showed that the pollution was mainly due to the human activities in this area and it is needed to establish countmeasurements for the problems.

  • This study emphasizes syntaxonomy and syndynamics of intermediate (Zwischen) moor (area: 14,000 $m^2$) at Mt. Shinbul in Yangsan, southeastern Korean Peninsula. A total of 105 vascular plant species including 26 monitor-species were recorded. Analysis by the $Z\"{u}rich$-Montpellier School's method distinguished eight vegetation units: Eleocharitis-Blyxetum echinospermae ass. nov., Eriocaulon sikokianum-Utricularia racemosa community, Eleocharis wichurai-Molinia japonica community, Platanthero-Molinietum japonicas, Miscanthus sinensis for. purpurascens community, Tripterygium regelii community, Symplocos chinensis-Quercus mongolica community, Symplocos chinensis-Quercus dentata community. PCoA (Principal Coordinates Analysis) shows that vegetation changes and distributional aspects are associated with both moisture condition and sunlight on the ground layer and soil nutrient level (mesotrophic to oligotrophic). Most important to Molinietea japonicas being representative intermediate moor vegetation at the southeasternmost fringe of the Korean Peninsula is the local cooling effect by mountainous cloud and mist zone resulting in shorter and wetter growing season. The Yangsan moor vegetation was compared with earlier descriptions of related Mujechi moor from anthropogenic and natural moor vegetations.

  • Taxonomic composition and diversity were wxamined by statistical analysis for bacterial communities in surface waters of the Sudong Stream, a tributary of North Han River. For total 282 isolates, Flavobacterium, Aeromonas and Enterobacteriaceae was identified by the deterministic schemes as a major group above 50% of total isolates in all sampling sites. Morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics were numerically analyzed for bacterial isolates from each site and clustered into 15-28 groups. Not all statistically clustered groups were identical to the groups derived from deterministic identification. Especially, consistent relationship was not found in dendrograms for the groups with each a single strain which gas peculiar sugar-degrading activity. At a level of 80% similarity, bacterial diversity (H) was ranged as 2.37-3.14, and it was suggested that the research area was oligotrophic-mesotrophic status. Regional distribution of bacterial community was most heterogeneous at the site where large input of allochthonous materials or bacteria were occurred. And that was the significant factor for the compositions of bacterial communities in the Sudong stream.

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely poluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating the structure of epiphytic diatom communities on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at Banwoul high wetland (3 stations) and low wetland (3 stations) from March to October 2005. The concentration of T-N of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland, but the concentration of T-P were increased at outflow part. Epiphytic diatoms on the reed were a total 109 taxa which were composed of 103 species, 5 varieties, 1 unidentified species. The standing crops were rapidly decreasing tendency from spring to autumn but chlorophyll-a concentration were showed a very irregulated changes. Dominant species were 6 taxa which were Achnanthes minutissima in the early investigation, and were changed to the genus Navicula and the genus Nitzschia in the summer. DAIpo were ranged the values of $20.2{\sim}51$, which were mesosaprobic states at the high wetland and ranged the values of $12.4{\sim}52$, which were polysaprobic to mesosaprobic states at the low wetland. TDI were ranged the values of $28.8{\sim}94.5$, which were oligotrophic to eutrophic state at the high wetland and ranged the values of $33.3{\sim}89.7$ which were mesotrophic to eutrophic states at the low wetland. The healthy assessment (DAIpo and TDI) of water ecosystem were showed clean-bad from spring to autumn. These epiphytic diatom communities were determinated by the biological factor such as the growth of reed and the physical factors such as water temperature, light penetration and SS and so on.

  • In order to estimate the characteristics of the growth and composition of phytoplankton according to the available nutrients, we added nitrate (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, $100{\mu}M$) and phosphate (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, $10{\mu}M$) to field samples in a eutrophic site (St. 1) and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2010 as well as a eutrophic site (St. 1, 5), a mesotrophic site (St. 19), and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2011 at Jinhae Bay, Korea. The phytoplankton growth in the areas with additional nitrates and phosphates on St. 1 were significantly different from the control (One-way ANOVA:P<0.01). The dominant species at St. 1 in 2010 were Heterocapsa triquetra and Pseudo-nitzchia spp., to which nitrate and phosphate were added, respectively. The dominant species at St. 22 in 2010 differed between treatment conditions as follows: nitrate treatment Chaetoceros spp. (${\leq}10{\mu}M$), Thalassiosira spp. ($20{\mu}M$), and Pseudo-nitzchia spp.(${\geq}50{\mu}M$) for nitrate treatment; Cylindrotheca spp. ($2{\mu}M$) and Pseudo-nitzchia spp. ($5{\mu}M$) for phosphate treatment. Phytoplankton growth in 2011 according to the added nutrient were significantly different with treatment concentrations (One-way ANOVA: P<0.01). Moreover, the beginning of exponential growth in phytoplanktons was different between the eutro-mesotrophic sites (St. 1, 5, and 19) and the oligotrophic sites (St. 22) on day 2 and day 6 respectively. This implies that phytoplankton growth in the low nutrient condition may be retarded. The dominant species at St. 1 were Eucampia spp. and Chaetoceros spp. in the low nutrient treatment compared to Skeletonema spp., and Thalassiosira spp in the high nutrient treatment. The dominant species at St. 5 and St. 19 were mostly Skeletonema spp. and Chaetoceros spp. However, the dominant species at St. 22 was Thalassiosira spp.. The results of this study showed that phytoplankton growth and composition were different in areas with different nutrient characteristics resulting from the additional nutrients. Therefore, the nutrients additional algal assay could be indirectly explained why the biomass and composition of phytoplankton in Jinhae Bay has shown spatial differences.
