  • In this study, the applicability of geotextile mesh soil nails on slopes was evaluated by numerical analysis to reduce environmental problems which a general soil nailing might produce and to improve its economical efficiency and construction convenience. To this end, in situ pull-out tests were conducted for both general soil nail and geotextile mesh soil nail and their pull-out characteristics were analyzed. Also, finite difference method was used to verify the suitability of numerical simulation. Parameters for nail and ground conditions were selected and sensitivity analysis was performed for the evaluation of slope stability. In addition, analysis was performed by limit equilibrium method which is widely used for slope stability analysis in practice. As a result, if the nail diameter was same, there is no big difference between geotextile mesh soil nails and general soil nails in terms of slope stability. Therefore it can be expected that geotextile mesh soil nails could be effective for slope reinforcement since they could keep a slope as stable as general soil nails and give better economical efficiency and construction convenience than general soil nails.

  • As a special type of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have become the comer stone of research issues. Due to the limited operational environment of WMNs, an efficient connected dominating set (CDS) construction scheme is an important concern since it has been found extremely useful in broadcasting, routing and virtual backbone construction. In this paper, we propose a distributed Bandwidth-Interference aware CDS construction scheme to improve the network performance via two parameters such as node's number of neighbor and link bandwidth. Our CDS construction scheme selects the node that has more neighbors and enough bandwidth to support more end-devices in order to enhance overall network throughput and reliability. We confirm through simulations and show that our scheme constructs the CDS with the small subset of DS and the link that has better bandwidth.

  • This paper deals with the development of h-version adaptive mesh refinement and recovery strategy using variable-node elements and its application to various engineering field problems with 2D quadrilateral and 3D hexahedral models. The variable-node elements which have variable mid-side nodes on edges or faces are effectively used in overcoming some problems in connecting the different layer patterns of the transition zone between the refined and coarse mesh. A modified recovery technique of gradients adequate for variable-node elements and proper selection of error norms for each engineering field problems are proposed. In the region in which the error is greater than the permissible refinement error, the mesh is locally refined by subdivision. Reversely, in some parts of the domain having the error smaller than the permissible recovery error, the mesh is locally recovered (coarsened) by combination. Hierarchical structures (e.g. quadtrees and octrees) and element-based storage structures are composed to perform this adaptive process of refinement and recovery. Some numerical examples of a 3D heat conduction analysis of the concrete with hydration heat and a 2D flow analysis of vortex shedding show effectiveness and validity of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper deals with the development of variable-node element and its application to the adaptive h-version mesh refinement-recovery for the incompressible viscous flow analysis. The element which has variable mid-side nodes can be used in generating the transition zone between the refined and unrefined element and efficiently used for the construction of a refined mesh without generating distorted elements. A modified Guassian quadrature is needed to evaluate the element matrices due to the discontinuity of derivatives of the shape functions used for the element. The penalty function method which can reduce the number of the independent variables is adopted for the purpose of computational efficiency and the selective reduced integration is carried out for the convection and pressure terms to preserve the stability of solution. For the economical analysis of transient problems in which the locations to be refined are changed in accordance with the dynamic distribution of velocity gradient, not only the mesh refinement but also the mesh recovery is needed. The numerical examples show that the optimal mesh for the finite element analysis of a wind around the structures can be obtained automatically by the proposed scheme.

  • The wireless mesh network (WMN) is a next-generation technology for data networking that has the advantage in cost and the flexibility in its construction because of not requiring the infra-structure such as the ethernet. This paper focuses on the optimal link scheduling problem under the wireless mesh network to effectuate real-time streaming by using the constraint programming. In particular, Under the limitation of half-duplex transmission in wireless nodes, this paper proposes a solution method to minimize the makespan in scheduling packet transmission from wireless nodes to the gateway in a WMN with no packet transmission conflicts due to the half-duplex transmission. It discusses the conflicts in packet transmission and deduces the condition of feasible schedules, which defines the model for the constraint programming. Finally it comparatively shows and discusses the results using two constraint programming solvers, Gecode and the IBM ILOG CP solver.

  • In this paper, we review the lowest order staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods on polygonal meshes in 2D. The proposed method offers many desirable features including easy implementation, geometrical flexibility, robustness with respect to mesh distortion and low degrees of freedom. Discrete function spaces for locally H1 and H(div) spaces are considered. We introduce special properties of a sub-mesh from a given star-shaped polygonal mesh which can be utilized in the construction of discrete spaces and implementation of the staggered discontinuous Galerkin method. For demonstration purposes, we consider the lowest case for the Poisson equation. We emphasize its efficient computational implementation using only geometrical properties of the underlying mesh.

  • In-depth knowledge of fabric microstructure is essential for understanding clothing comfort since it plays a significant role in heat and mass transfer between the human body and clothing. In this study, a novel method was employed for investigating 3D surfaces and solid construction characteristics of specific fabrics by using a reverse engineering technique. The surface construction data were obtained by a confocal laser scanning microscope and then manipulated by a 3D analysis program. Triangle mesh was used for connecting each 3D point, with clouds and fabric surface characteristics created by rendering techniques. For generating a 3D solid model, determinants of radius of curvature was used. According to the proposed method, actual surface expression of the real fabric was achieved successfully. The results from this methodology can be applied to the detailed analysis of clothing comfort that is highly influenced by the microstructure of the fabric.

  • 3D mesh metamorphosis (morphing) deals with two input polyhedral objects and generates an animation in which the source mesh gradually changes to the target through in-between meshes. The basic and common idea of previous mesh morphing techniques can be summarized as the construction and interpolation of a metamesh. However, an approach based on a metamesh has fundamental limitations of complicated in-between meshes and no topology (connectivity) changes in a metamorphosis. This paper presents a novel approach for 3D mesh morphing, which is not based on a metamesh and overcomes the limitations of previous work. The approach simultaneously interpolates the topology and geometry of input meshes. With the approach, an in-between mesh contains only the vertices from the source and target meshes. Since no additional vertices are introduced, the in-between meshes are much simpler than those generated by previous techniques.

  • At the present, the mechanized form roads pavement was constructed with plain concrete. Mostly, it was used by welded wire mesh for preventing crack. Cellulose fibers for the reinforcement of concrete offer relatively high levels of elastic modulus, fiber count (per unit weight), specific surface, and bond strength to cement-based materials. The construction of concrete pavement confirmed that cellulose fiber reinforced concrete was applicable to mechanized form roads pavement. In the study, cellulose fibers were used here at 0.08 % volume fraction, which is equivalent to a fiber content of $1.2kg/m^3$. Cellulose fiber reinforced concrete were compared with plain concrete. Field test results indicated that cellulose fiber reinforced concrete showed slightly to increase of 28 days compressive strength and improved the initial strength. it tended to increase of splitting tensile strength. Test results showed that the slump and air content tend to decreased. but, the variation of air contends is very little. Also, construction cost of cellulose fiber reinforced concrete is less than about 25.7 % the case of welded wire mesh previously used. Therefore, The cost reduction is expected to be possible in construction site by mechanized form roads pavement.
