  • Point cloud is widely used in 3D applications due to the recent advancement of 3D data acquisition technology. Polygonal mesh-based compression has been dominant since it can replace many points sharing a surface with a set of vertices with mesh structure. Recent point cloud-based applications demand more point-based interactivity, which makes point cloud compression (PCC) becomes more attractive than 3D mesh compression. Interestingly, an exploration activity has been started to explore the feasibility of PCC standard in MPEG. In this paper, a new color attribute compression method is presented for point cloud data. The proposed method utilizes the spatial redundancy among color attribute data to construct a color palette. The color palette is constructed by using K-means clustering method and each color data in point cloud is represented by the index of its similar color in palette. To further improve the compression efficiency, the spatial redundancy between the indices of neighboring colors is also removed by marking them using a flag bit. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a better improvement of RD performance compared with that of the MPEG PCC reference software.

  • It is important to compress three dimensional (3D) data efficiently, since 3D data are too large to store or transmit in general. In this paper, we propose a lossless compression algorithm of the 3D mesh connectivity, based on the vertex degree. Most techniques for the 3D mesh compression treat the connectivity and the geometric separately, but our approach attempts to exploit the geometric information for compressing the connectivity information. We use the geometric angle constraint of the vertex fanout pattern to predict the vertex degree, so the proposed algorithm yields higher compression efficiency than the conventional algorithms.

  • Being in an internet era, the rapid transmission of 3D mesh models is getting more important and efforts toward the compression of various aspects of mesh models have been provided. Even though a mesh model usually consists of coordinates of vertices and properties such as colors and normals, topology plays the most important part in the compression of other information in the models. Despite the extensive studies on Edgebreaker, the most frequently used and rigorously evaluated topology compressor, the probability distribution of its five op-codes, C, R, E, S, and L, has never been rigorously analyzed yet. In this paper, we present probability distribution of the op-codes which is useful for both the optimization of the compression performance and a priori estimation of compressed file size.

  • In this work, we propose a compression algorithm for depth images, which are obtained from multi-view sequences. The proposed algorithm represents a depth image using a 3-D regular triangular mesh and predictively encodes the mesh vertices using a linear prediction scheme. The prediction errors are encoded with a arithmetic coder. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides better performances than the JPEG2000 lossless coder.

  • We extend the octree subdivision process from Cartesian coordinates to spherical coordinates to develop more efficient space-partitioning structure for surface models. As an application of the proposed structure, we apply the octree subdivision in spherical coordinates ("S-Octree") to geometry compression in progressive mesh coding. Most previous researches on geometry-driven progressive mesh compression are devoted to improve predictability of geometry information. Unlike this, we focus on the efficient information storage for the space-partitioning structure. By eliminating void space at initial stage and aligning the R axis for the important components in geometry information, the S-Octree improves the efficiency in geometry information coding. Several meshes are tested in the progressive mesh coding based on the S-Octree and the results for performance parameters are presented.

  • The present work focuses on experimental and numerical performance of the ferrocement RC walls reinforced with welded steel mesh, expanded steel mesh, fiber glass mesh and tensar mesh individually. The experimental program comprised twelve RC walls having the dimensions of 450 mm×100 mm×1000 mm under concentric compression loadings. The studied variables are the type of reinforcing materials, the number of mesh layers and volume fraction of reinforcement. The main aim is to assess the influence of engaging the new inventive materials in reinforcing the composite RC walls. Non-linear finite element analysis; (NLFEA) was carried out to simulate the behavior of the composite walls employing ANSYS-10.0 Software. Parametric study is also demonstrated to check out the variables that can mainly influence the mechanical behavior of the model such as the change of wall dimensions. The obtained numerical results indicated the acceptable accuracy of FE simulations in the estimation of experimental values. In addition, the strength gained of specimens reinforced with welded steel mesh was higher by amount 40% compared with those reinforced with expanded steel mesh. Ferrocement specimens tested under axial compression loadings exhibit superior ultimate loads and energy absorbing capacity compared to the conventional reinforced concrete one.

  • For saving time and cost of experiment Finite Element Method has been developed for several decades. It's the defect of FEM that when we are in processing of finite element analysis, the material if deformed so much that we can't proceed analysis any more. In this case, the remeshing process should be done on this material. In hot forging process, almost all remeshing process does not consider flash of the material. Because as mesh size become swatter, consuming time become larger. But if mesh size is big, there is the defect that the result of analysis is not so accurate. So, new remeshing algorithm is needed to save time and to get more accurate result.

  • Acetaminophen, fenbufen, and mefenamic acid tablets were formulated with the same additives, granulated to different sizes, ranging $30{\sim}200mesh$, and compressed by pressure of $0.5{\sim}2.0\;ton{\cdot}cm^{-2}$. The hardness and disintegration time of the three tablets were determined. The dissolution rates of the three tablets at critical point of pressure were investigated. The results showed that fenbufen, and mefenamic acid tablet had critical compression pressure of $1.0\;ton{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, but acetaminophen tablet had that of $1.5\;ton{\cdot}cm^{-2}$. Neverthless, three tablets were disintegrated within 5 min. Among the three tablets, mefenamic acid tablet followed zero order of dissolution and the rate constants were as fellows; $1.68 \;mg{\cdot}min^{-1}\;(30{\sim}50mesh),\;1.76mg{\cdot} min^{-1}\;(50{\sim}80\;mesh)\;and\;4.85\;mg{\cdot}min^{-1}\;(80{\sim}200mesh)$.

  • VRML data, which is mainly structural element, is frequently used for modeling and visualizing 3D objects. Although there can be variations, it is a usual practice to represent 3D shapes in VRML format. Ever since the advent of Internet, there have been strong needs to transfer shape data through Internet. Because of this need, it is necessary to transform a data file in VRML or similar format into a more convenient form to transfer through the network. In a VRML file, a model is sometimes divided into a set of triangle meshes due to several practical reasons. However, this causes various demerits for the fast transmission. Therefore, it is more efficient to merge the mesh sets into one mesh set for the transmission. In this paper, we present the problems in the merge process and the techniques to handle the situation.

  • In this study, a remeshing algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation method is developed. In the finite element simulation of forging process, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements and distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical error will be highly increased. However, it is not desirable to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the analysis error by constructing locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this paper, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by using a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimized smoothing technique is adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.
