The results of this study provide new information for a better understanding of the genomic evolution process of the shellfish species investigated in this experiment.
1. This paper deals with the natural mortality of the early young bivalve, Meretrix lusoria, (less than 13mm in shell length) and the perforations bored in the bivalve by bering snails, Neverita didyma and Natica severa. The investigation was carried out in the Kunsan area and in the laboratory from May to October of 1968. 2. The natural mortality of the field population during this period was $12.1\%$ and among this number $38.1\%$ were drilled by boring snails. 3. The common species of the Naticid gastropods, boring snails-Neverite didyma and Natice severa - are encountered in the habitat of M. lusoria. The perforations drilled by these species were broadly bevelled. 4. The location of the holes on the valves varied widely, while most of holes on the valves were located at a relatively definite umbo position. 5. The inner and outer diameters of the holes varied in proportion to the shell length of the clam; each ranging in shell length from 1 to 3mm, 3 to 6mm, and 6 to 13mm, and the outer diameters were 0.4-0.5mm, 0.7-0.9mm and 0.9-1.2mm. On the other hand, the ratio of the inner and outer diameters differed in proportion to the shell length of the clam. 6. Predation rates of Neverita didyma was much greater at night than during the day at room temperature. An average of 1.7 young clams was drilled and consumed, per snail, per day. This rate was greater than that of the Natica severa. 7 Predation rates varied in proportion to the shell length of the clam and the shell height of the snails.
Meretrix lusoria is one of the most favorite edible bivalves inhabiting wide inter-tidal flats along the western coast of Korea. Over the period of July to September 1973, some specimens from a tidal flat near AnMyun Island were submerged in sea water with various concentrations of ammo-mum hydroxide added and careful observations were made on their fertilization, early development, and metamorphosis of the larvae. The highest rate of fertilization was demonstrated by individuals treated with 1/1000 normal solution of ammonium hydroxide, and their fertilized eggs followed normal development, i. e., two cell stage in 1.2 hours after fertilization, gastrula stage after 4.7 hours, and trochophore stage after 5.6 hours. Within 24 hours after fertilization M. lusoria larvae have acquired the form of early straight-hinge veliger with the mean prodissoconch I length of $112\mu$. It takes seven days to get the umbo stage with the mean shell length of $172\mu$ and twenty days to get the metamorphosing stage with the mean shell length of $232\mu$. The larvae were cultured to the metamorphosing stage with the shell length of $272\mu$ in the laboratory condition. The relationship between the shell length (L) and the shell height (H) in veliger stage is shown as H=1.02325L-24.46425 with a significant difference.
In this study, growth-line analysis was carried out on the hard clam (Meretrix petechialis) collected from the Neolithic shell middens in Daejuk-ri, Seosan, Korea, to reconstruct palaeoenvironment. Growth increments of 206 specimens of the clam were examined. The ages of the specimens were determined from the rings on the shells. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line, indicating a correspondence in each ring formation. Growth pattern of the midden specimens was compared to that of modern ones collected from Gimje, Jeonbuk. Growth curves for shell length fitted to the von Berta anffy's growth curve were expressed respectively as follows: $SL_t=102.9025[1-e^{-0.18657(t+1.0906)}]$ in the shell midden specimens, $SL_t=104.2583[1-e^{-0.2277(t+0.7499)}]$ in the modern ones. The relationship between shell length (SL; mm) and shell height (SH; mm) was expressed by the following equations: SH = 0.7791 SL + 3.6636 ($R^2$ = 0.946) in the midden specimens, SH = 0.8103 SL + 0.5145 ($R^2$ = 0.991) in the modern ones. The results of the tests regarding the differences between regression coefficients and elevations of growth curves of these two populations demonstrate that the slopes were not significantly different (p < 0.05), but the elevations were (p > 0.05). However, overall growth curves of the midden and modern populations were not significantly different, indicating that shell growth environments of the two areas are similar. Therefore, it is likely that sea temperature near the midden area could be similar to that of present Gimje area, and thus temperature during the period of the midden formation could be higher than presently known.

Mass production method on artificial seedling production of hard clam Meretrix petechialis was developed indoor culture system. Spawning of adult clam (SL $65.8{\pm}8.4mm$) was induced using the combined method of air exposure and water temperature raising. The fertilized eggs were developed to D-shaped larvae after 17.7 hours at $27^{\circ}C$ and hatching rate was 6.1%. Shell length (SL) of D-shaped larvae was measured to be $131.4{\pm}2.6{\mu}m$ and thereafter the larvae grew to the settled spats with SL $190.2{\pm}7.5{\mu}m$ in 4 days. Estimated survival rate of settled spats was 48.1%. Spat collection on 130,000 spats with SL $0.19{\pm}0.01mm$ performed conducted by sand bottom circulation filtering method. Collected spats grew up to $3.1{\pm}0.8mm$ in 46 days, $6.6{\pm}1.8mm$ in 87 days, and $10.5{\pm}0.9mm$ in 114 days. The relative growth between SL and shell height (SH) was calculated to be SH = 0.8501SL + 0.0196 ($R^2=0.9987$) during the whole spat period. During spats rearing, they were suffered from one time of mass mortality at SL 3.1 mm, but 51,000 spats were finally survived with the rate of 39.2% at 114 days of spat rearing in indoor tank system.

Artificial induction of maturation by heating of the hard clam, Meretrix petechiails (Lamarck) broodstock was investigated from 25 May to 30 June in 2008. We experimented maturation by keeping the breeding water temperature at 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ and as the natural water temperature and found the following results. In case of the female, maturation was the quickest in the experiment group of $30^{\circ}C$ and the maturation tended to be slower as the water temperature was lower. The similar trend was displayed among the male. At experiment completion, maturation induction rate was found to be the highest at 46.0% in the experiment group of $30^{\circ}C$ followed by 35.0% in the experiment group of $15^{\circ}C$, 18.0% in the experiment group of natural water temperature and 12.0% in the experiment group of $20^{\circ}C$. During the period of the experiment, the survival rate was of 90% or more in all groups.

The study describes growth and survival on different kinds of sediment improvements of early spats of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. Specimens of the mature hard clam were collected in the intertidal zone of Yeonggwang, Korea, July 2011. After transportation, early spats(shell length $196{\pm}14{\mu}m$) collected in mature hard clam were used. Experiment period were July 7 to August 6 in 2011 (30 days). Sediment improvements used iodine(10 ppm), hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$, 5 ppm), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, 100 ppm), chlorine dioxide($ClO_2$, 100 ppm) and potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$, 5 ppm). After cultured during 30 days, shell length growth of hard clam were observed $1.04{\pm}0.26mm$ in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, $1.03{\pm}0.25mm$ in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm and $1.01{\pm}0.28mm$ in iodine 10 ppm. Survival rate were 31.4% in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm, 12.1% in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, 11.6% in iodine 10 ppm, 1.5% in hydrogen peroxide 5 ppm and 0% in potassium permanganate 5 ppm.
In this study, growth-line analysis was carried out on the hard clam (Meretrix petechialis) recovered from the Neolithic Age Daejuk-ri Shell Middens, Seosan, Korea, with aim to determine the seasonality of shellfish collection and site occupation. Growth increments of 206 specimens of the clam were examined. The marginal index (MI) of the archaeological specimens was calculated and was compared to the monthly marginal index of modern specimens under the assumption that the growth pattern was the same as it is today. MI of the archaeological specimens ranged from 0.13 to 1.29 and was divided into four categories: < 0.63, spring; 0.63-0.76, summer; 0.76-0.89, fall; $$\geq_-$$ 0.89, winter collection. As a result, of 206 specimens, 170 specimens (82.5%) represented spring, 18 (8.7%) summer, 10 (4.9%) fall and 8 (3.9%) winter collection. The results suggest year-round shellfish collection at the sites, with an emphasis on spring. Considering these results it can be inferred that the sites were occupied throughout the year.

For industrialization of the hard clams, Meretrix petechiails (Lamarck), spawning was induced per spawning induction technique in the artificial maturation group administered of parent maturation control and the natural maturation group of which parents were transported for artificial spawning per time period. Then, fertilization rates, hatching rates and D-shaped larva development rates were investigated. In addition, growth and survival rates of larvae were investigated per larva breeding technique. The results of spawning induction by exposure in the artificial maturation group indicated that response rates were relatively higher at 23% and 32% respectively at the 4th hour and the 8th hour of exposure. In terms of water temperature increase, responses began only when the temperature reached $28^{\circ}C$ or higher. In the experiment group administered with both exposure and water temperature increase techniques, response rate was found to be 45% or higher at the 4th hour of exposure and the temperature of $28^{\circ}C$. At the temperatures of 29, 30 and $31^{\circ}C$, significant differences were not observed. Therefore, it was indicated that the response rates of parent hard clams were higher toward water temperature increase than exposure time. As for spawning induction per time period of the transported parent group, response rate and D-shaped larva development rate were the highest at 67.6% and 96% respectively on August 6, 2009. In terms of water temperatures during larva breeding experiment, growth was faster as water temperature was higher. In addition, growth and survival rates were relatively higher at the salinity of 25. In terms of stocking density, growth and survival rates were relatively higher at 5 inds./mL.

Samples of Meretrix lusoria were collected monthly from the tidal flat of Simpo, Puan-gun, Chollabuk-do, west coast of Korea from April 2004 to March 2005. Age of M. lusoria was determined from the rings on the shell. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variations in the marginal index (MI') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of February to April. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: SH = 0.8103 SL + 0.5145 $(r^2=0.991)$. The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation: SW = 0.4897 SL + 0.0315 $(r^2=0.976)$. Shell length (SL; mm) and total weight (TW; g) was expressed by the following equation: $TW=2.9195\times10^{-4}\;SL^{2.9547}\;(R^2=0.991)$. Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: $SH=0.8103\;SL+0.5145\;(R^2=0.991)$ The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation: $SW=0.4897\;SL+0.0315\;(R^2=0.976)$. Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's growth curve were expressed respectively as: $SL_t=104.9[l-e^{-0.2235(t+0.7677)}],\;TW_t=280.8[l-e^{-0.2235(t+0.7677)}]^{2.9547}$.
