  • The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is one of the most promising proposed processes for advanced electric power generation that is likely to replace conventional coal combustion. This emerging technology will not only improve considerably the thermal efficiency but also reduce or eliminate the environmentally adverse effects normally associated with coal combustion. The IGCC process gasifies coal under reducing conditions with essentially all the sulfur existing in the form of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) in the product fuel gas. The need to remove $H_2S$ from coal derived fuel gases is a significant concern which stems from stringent government regulations and also, from a technical point of view and a need to protect turbines from corrosion. The waste seashells were used for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from a hot gas stream. The sulphidation of waste seashells with $H_2S$ was studied in a thermogravimetric analyzer at temperature between $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The desulfurization performance of the waste seashell sorbents was experimentally tested in a fixed bed reactor system. Sulfidation experiments performed under reaction conditions similar to those at the exit of a coal gasifier showed that preparation procedure and technique, the type and the amount of seashell, and the size of the seashell affects the $H_2S$ removal capacity of the sorbents. The pore structure of fresh and sulfided seashell sorbents was analyzed using mercury porosimetry, nitrogen adsorption, and scanning electronmicroscopy.

  • A sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$ have been included into a $LiAlO_{2}$ electrolyte support by a tape casting method in order to reinforce mechanical strength of the support for molten carbonate fuel cells [MCFCs). Starting idea originates from the low melting point of $B_{2}O_{3}$ ($450^{\circ}C$), which can provide the low temperature consolidation of ceramic materials. The mechanical properties and the microstructure changes of the $B_{2}O_{3}$-included electrolyte support were examined by scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimetry, X-ray powder diffraction [XRD], high temperature differential scanning calorimeter and three-point bending strength measurement. The mechanical strength was clearly improved by addition of $B_{2}O_{3}$. The increase of mechanical strength results from the neck growth of a new $LiAlO_{2}$ phase between $LiAlO_{2}$ particles by the liquid phase sintering. Average pore size and porosity of the electrolyte support reinforced by addition of the sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$, was $0.24{\mu}m$ and 59%, respectively which were suitable microstructure of a matrix for an application of MCFCs.

  • Hardened cement-based materials exposed to the high temperatures of a fire are known to experience change in the pore structure as well as microstructural changes that affect their mechanical properties and tend to reduce their durability. In this experimental investigation, hardened Portland cement pastes were exposed to elevated temperatures of 200, 400, 600, 800, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, and the resulting damage was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and density measurements. These results revealed that the residual compressive strength is increased at temperatures greater than $400^{\circ}C$ due to a small pore size of 3 nm and/or rehydration of the dehydrated cement paste. However, a loss of the residual strength occurs at temperatures exceeding 500 and $600^{\circ}C$. This can be attributed to the decomposition of hydrates such as portlandite and to an increase in the total porosity.

  • Porous alumina-based ceramics are of special interest due to their outstanding mechanical properties and their thermal and chemical stability. Nevertheless, the high electrical resistance of alumina-based ceramics, due to the generation of static electricity, leads to difficulty in applying a vacuum chuck in the semi-conductor process. Therefore, development of alumina-based ceramics for applications with vacuum chucks aims to have primary properties of low electrical resistance and high air permeability. In this study, we tailored the electrical resistance of porous alumina-based ceramics by adjusting the amount of $MnO_2$ (with $TiO_2$ fixed at an amount of 2 wt%) and by using coarse alumina powder for high air permeability. The characteristics of the specimens were studied using scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimeter, capillary flow porosimetry, universal testing machine, X-ray diffraction and high-resistance meter.

  • The waste seashells were used for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from a hot gas stream. The sulphidation of waste seashells with $H_{2}$S was studied in a thermogravimetric analyzer at temperature between 600 and $800^{circ}C$. The desulfurization performance of the waste seashell sorbents was experimentally tested in a fixed bed reactor system. Sulfidation experiments performed under reaction conditions similar to those at the exit of a coal gasifier showed that preparation procedure and technique, the type and the amount of seashell, and the size of the seashell affect the $H_{2}$S removal capacity of the sorbents. The pore structure of fresh and sulfided seashell sorbents was analyzed using mercury porosimetry, nitrogen adsorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Measurements of the reaction of $H_{2}$S with waste seashells show that particles smaller than 0.631 mm can achieve high conversion to CaS. According to TGA and fixed bed reactor results, temperature had influenced on $H_{2}$S removal efficiency. As desulfurization temperature increased, desulfurization efficiency increased. Also, maximum desulfurization efficiency was observed at $800^{circ}C$. Desulfurization was related to calcinations temperature.

  • Shirasu, a pyroclastic flow deposit, showed considerable performance as aluminosilicate source in geopolymer, based on past research. However, the polymerization reactivity was somewhat lower compared to the traditional fly ash based geopolymer even though the long-term strength was fairly good. The present study concentrates on the development of higher initial strength performance of Shirasu based geopolymer by utilizing ground granulated blast furnace slag as an admixture. Mortars with various mix proportions were adopted to study the effect of parametric changes on strength development along with the addition of slag in different percentages. A combination of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate was used as alkaline activators considering parameters like molar ratios of alkali to geopolymer water and silica to alkali molar ratio. The mortars were cured at elevated temperatures under different curing conditions to analyze the effect on strength development. Compressive strength test, mercury intrusion porosimetry and X-ray powder diffraction were carried out to assess the strength performance and microstructure of slag-Shirasu based geopolymer. Based on the experimental study, it was observed that the initial and long-term strength development of Slag-Shirasu geopolymer were improved by the addition of slag.

  • In this study, oxidized alginate/gelatin/biphase calcium phosphate (BCP)- based hydrogel composites were fabricated. Alginate sodium was oxidized by periodate. The oxidized product was confirmed by using $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectra. The number average molecular weight ($M_n$), the average molecular weight ($M_w$) of the oxidized alginate were determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The hydrogel was formed from the oxidized alginate and gelatin solution via Schift-base reaction. The hydrogel showed a highly porosity by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP). Crosslinked density of the gel matrix were assessd by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) assay that shows a high effect on swelling ratio. Increment of the crosslinked desity resulted in enhancing compressive strength of the hydrogel composite. The cytotoxity of hydrogel was assessed with osteoblast MG-63. The hydrogel composites show a high compatibility. The obtained results showed a potential application for bone regeneration in future.

  • This study is interested in identifying the effectiveness of alkali-activated fire protection material compounds including the alkali-activator such as potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash as the fire resistant finishing materials. Also, this paper is concerned with change in compressive strength and pore structure of the alkali-activated fire protection material at high temperatures. The testing methods of fire protection materials in high temperature properties are make use of TG-DSC and mercury intrusion porosimetry measurements. This study results show that compressive strength is rapidly degraded depending on a rise of heating temperature. Porosity showed a tendency to increase irrespective of specimen types. This is due to both the outbreak of collapse of gel comprising the cement and a micro crack by heating. However, alkali-activated fire protection material composed of potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate and fly ash has the thermal stability of the slight decrease of compressive strength and porosity at high temperature. These thermal stability is caused by the ceramic binding capacity induced by alkali activation reaction by the reason of the thermal analysis result not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrate.

  • Kaolin-based membranes with a pore size of 0.30-0.40 ${\mu}m$ were successfully prepared by a simple pressing route using low-cost starting materials, kaolin and sodium borate. The prepared green bodies were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$. The sintered membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and capillary flowmetry. It was observed that the porosity decreased with an increase in both the sintering temperature and the sodium borate content, whereas the flexural strength increased with an increase in both the sintering temperature and the sodium borate content. The air flow rate decreased with an increase in the sodium borate content. The typical porosity, flexural strength, and specific flow rate of the kaolin-based membrane sintered with 5 wt% sodium borate at $1100^{\circ}C$ were 37%, 19 MPa, and $1{\times}10^{-3}L/min/cm^2$, respectively, at a p of 30 psi.
