방향식물이 누에 생리에 미치는 영향 (Physiological Study of Silkworm due to Aromatical Plants)

  • 춘하추 삼기사육에 있어서 연구조사한 결과 본시험에서 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. Menthol의 상기첨식시험에서 Menthol의 1%내에서는 잠아의 생리에 하등의 영향이 없다는 결과를 얻었다. 이 결과는 누에의 상기한 실용형질 전면에 걸쳐 무해이며 또 유익하다는 점도 발견치 못하였다. 2. 박하를 상전에 간작하여 지장이 없음이 연명되였으며 박하엽에 거찰된 상엽을 잠아에 결여하여도 누에 생리에 하등영향이 없다. 3. 들깨(荏)에 있어서도 2항과 동일하다. 4. 결과적으로 박하의 상전간작은 무해로운 작물로 사료되며 들깨의 상전간작도 농민들이 기피하는 경향이 있으나 잠아에는 하등영향이 없다.

The Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oil from Dracocephalum foetidum against Pathogenic Microorganisms

  • A number of essential oils from Mongolian aromatic plants are claimed to have antimicrobial activities. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum, a popular essential oil used in Mongolian traditional medicine, was examined for its antimicrobial activity. Eight human pathogenic microorganisms including B. subtilis, S. aureus, M. lutens, E. hirae, S. mutans, E. coli, C. albicans, and S. cerevisiae were examined. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against most of the pathogenic bacteria and yeast strains that were tested; by both the agar diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay ($MIC\;range\;was\;26-2592{\mu}g/ml$). Interestingly, Dracocephalum foetidum even showed antimicrobial activity against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. We also analyzed the chemical composition of the oil by GC-MS and identified several major components, including n-Mentha-1,8-dien-10-al, limonene, geranial, and neral.

Acaricidal effects of herb essential oils against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) and qualitative analysis of a herb Mentha pulegium (pennyroyal)

  • This experiment was undertaken to screen the acaricidal effects of herb essential oils (pennyroyal, ylang ylang, citronella, lemon grass, tea tree, and rosemary) at different doses (0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.0125, and $0.00625{\mu}l/cm2$) and exposure times (5, 10, 20, 20, 30 and 60 min) on house dust mites Dermatophgoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus. The most effective acaricidal components of pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Of these essential oils, the most effective was pennyroyal, which is composed essentially of pulegone (> 99%), at a dose of $0.025{\mu}l/cm^2$, which at an exposure time of 5 min killed more than 98% of house dust mites. In the pennyroyal fumigation test, the closed method was more effective than the open method and maximum acaricidal effect was 100% at $0.025{\mu}l/cm^2$, 60 min. The results show that herb essential oils, in particular, pennyroyal was proved to have potent acaricidal activity.

Mentha canadensis attenuates adiposity and hepatic steatosis in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome, a global public health problem. Mentha canadensis (MA), a traditional phytomedicine and dietary herb used for centuries, was the focus of this study to investigate its effects on obesity. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty-five male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 2 groups and fed either a normal diet (ND, n = 10) or a high-fat diet (HFD, n = 25) for 4 weeks to induce obesity. After the obesity induction period, the HFD-fed mice were randomly separated into 2 groups: one group continued to be fed HFD (n = 15, HFD group), while the other group was fed HFD with 1.5% (w/w) MA ethanol extract (n = 10, MA group) for 13 weeks. RESULTS: The results showed that body and white adipose tissue (WAT) weights were significantly decreased in the MA-supplemented group compared to the HFD group. Additionally, MA supplementation enhanced energy expenditure, leading to improvements in plasma lipids, cytokines, hepatic steatosis, and fecal lipids. Furthermore, MA supplementation regulated lipid-metabolism-related enzyme activity and gene expression, thereby suppressing lipid accumulation in the WAT and liver. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that MA has the potential to improve diet-induced obesity and its associated complications, including adiposity, dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and inflammation.

Chemical Composition and Biocontrol Activity of Different Essential Oils against Soil-Borne Fungal Pathogens

  • In this study, the efficacy of the essential oil of Mentha longifolia, Achillea arabica and Artemisia absinthium plants were evaluated against important soil-borne fungal pathogens as Verticillium dahliae, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum. Essential oils were obtained from plants by hydrodistillation method and the chemical components of essential oils were determined by analyzing by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components found as piperitone oxide (13.61%), piperitenone oxide (15.55%), pulegone (12.47%), 1-menthone (5.75%), and camphor (5.75%) in M. longifolia, á-selinene 13.38%, camphor 13.34%, L-4-terpineneol 8.40%, (-)-á-Elemene 7.01%, 1,8-cineole 4.71%, and (-)-spathulenol 3.84% in A. arabica, and á-thujone (34.64%), 1,8-cineole (19.54%), pulegone (7.86%), camphene (5.31%), sabinene (4.86%), and germacrene-d (3.67%) in A. absinthium. The antifungal activities of the oils were investigated 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.00, and 2.00 μl/ml concentrations with the contact effect method. M. longifolia oil (1.00 and 2.00 μl/ml) has displayed remarkable antifungal effect and provided 100% inhibition on mycelial growth of V. dahliae, R. solani and F. oxysporum. The results obtained from this study may contribute to the development of new alternative and safe methods against soil-borne fungal pathogens.

유카(Yucca shidigera) 첨가에 의한 허브차의 개선에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Improvement of Herb Tea by Addition of Yucca (Yucca shidigera))

  • 허브와 유카는 차나 의약품, 화장품, 향신료 등에 널리 이용되고 있는 식물로써 본 연구에서 레몬 버베나, 스피아민트, 애플민트, 코리아민트(박하), 로즈마리, 파인애플세이지, 감국, 스테비아, 라벤더, 그리고 레몬 바베나 10종에 허브 및 각 단일종 허브에 0.02% 유카를 첨가하여 80℃에서 우려낸 차의 pH 및 가용성 고형물 양을 조사하였다. 허브차 단독보다는 유카를 첨가하였을 때 레몬바베나, 스피아민트, 애플민트, 박하, 그리고 로즈마리의 pH는 약간 감소하였으며, 고형물 함량에는 변화가 거의 없었다. 관능평가에서 허브차와 유카혼합차의 경우 몇몇을 제외하고는 큰 차이를 보이지 않았고, 향, 색, 맛, 그리고 전체적인 기호도에서 전체적으로 박하가 가장 좋은 것으로 나타났으며, 박하에 유카를 혼합했을 때 pH는 혼합농도가 높을수록 계속 감소하였으며, 관능평가 결과는 저농도(0.01∼0.04%) 첨가시 향상하였으나 그 이상 첨가시 오히려 선호도가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 유카를 허브 차에 저농도로 혼합하여 관능에 영향을 주지 않으면서도 새로운 기능성을 갖는 유카허브차를 개발하는데 그 가능성을 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 허브 중에서 특히 박하와 유카혼합차의 개발 가능성을 보여주었다고 생각된다.

Jasmonic Acid 및 NaCl 처리가 스피아민트의 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Jasmonic Acid and NaCl on the Growth of Spearmint(Mentha spicata L.))

  • 본 연구는 NaCl 및 jasmonic acid(JA) 처리 시 스피아민트(Mentha spicata)의 생육 및 생리적 반응 변화를 조사하고자 실시하였다. 대조구, JA($20{\mu}M$ JA 전처리), JA+NaCl($20{\mu}M$ JA 전처리+ 50mM NaCl), NaCl(50mM NaCl) 처리 등 4처리구로 구분하여 0.5배 Hoagland 용액에서 3주간 수경 재배한 후 생장반응과 엽록소, 비타민 C, 프롤린, 무기물, DPPH 라디칼 소거 항산화 활성 등을 측정하였다. 스피아민트의 초장, 엽장, 엽폭 및 생체중은 대조구에 비해 모든 처리구에서 감소하였고, 특히 NaCl 처리구에서 현저히 감소하였다. 반면에 건물중은 JA+NaCl 혼용처리구를 비롯하여 모든 처리구에서 증가하였다. 엽록소 a와 b 함량은 JA 처리구가 가장 높았으나 비타민 C와 항산화 활성 및 지상부의 프롤린 함량은 염 스트레스로 생육이 가장 낮았던 NaCl 처리구에서 가장 높게 나타났다. 이온 흡수의 균형 정도를 알 수 있는 K/Na 비율은 JA 단독 처리 시 증가하였고, NaCl처리 및 JA+NaCl 혼용 처리구에서는 $Na^+$ 흡수 증가로 인하여 K/Na 비율이 낮아졌다. 이러한 결과는 낮은 염 스트레스나 JA처리 같은 적절한 스트레스 처리가 항산화 활성과 정유를 포함하는 이차대사물질의 축적을 유도함으로써 스피아민트의 품질을 향상시킬 잠재적인 가능성을 보여준다.

공기이온으로 본 실내녹화 효과에 관한 연구 (Studies on Effects of Interior Plantscaping as Related to the Air Ions)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate of effects of environmental conditions which influence negative ions development. Negative ions are nature' most powerful air-cleaning agents, are created by nature, and found at their most optimal levels where the air is most pure and healthy. Negative ions are regarded as one of the important factors which indicate the quality of the air. Therefore, the focus of this study was to clear relationship among negative ions development induced by plant cultivar and environmental conditions such as air temperature, light intensity and relative humidity. As the results of this study, it was found that negative ions development was promoted during the period with plants compared to the period without plants. In Particular, negative ions development was high under air temperature $20^{\circ}C$, relative humidity 90% and dark condition. Temperature and humidity factors on this experiment was strongly affected on negative ions development, but light intensity had almost slight effect. It was shown that these results can contribute to the application of environmental control techniques to negative ions. Among plant cultivar of Spathiphyllum spp. Mentha spicata, and Cupressu arizonica, Mentha spicata was higher negative ions than the other plants, and also the leaves were higher than the stems and roots. The effect of plants on the perception of the inte끼r air quality may, therefore, be one explanation of this results about negative ions. on the other hand, it seems that a green indoor environment might be an increase in general well-being due to the plants.

탄소와 질소원이 박하정유와 정유성분에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Carbon and Nitrogen Sources on the Essential Oil Production and Its Composition in Callus Culture of Mentha piperita L.)

  • 본 연구에서는 탄소원, 질소원의 비율, inositol 및 비타민이 박하정유 생산과 멘톨생합성에 미치는 영향을 조사한 결과 암모니아태질소와 초산태질소의 비율이 1:2일 때 사용한 배지에 관계없이 정유생산이 많았다. 멘톨 생합성이 높았던 경우는 LS배지에서는 암모니아태와 질산태질소의 비율이 1 : 3이었고 MS배지에서는 1 : 2이었다. Sucrose 대신 glucose를 사용하였을 때는 사용한 배지에 관계없이 정유생산과 멘톨 생합성이 모두 감소하였다. Inositol의 농도를 증가하였을 경우 세포의 생장량은 증가하였으나 멘톨 함량은 감소하였다. 비타민 농도를 기본배지의 두배로 하였을 때 LS배지에서는 정유함량이 증가하였으나 MS배지에서는 감소하였다. 멘톨 함량은 모두 감소하였다.
