In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm using wavelet transform for still image database retrieval. Especially, it uses only the lowest frequency sub-band in multi-level wavelet transform so that a retrieval system uses a smaller quantity of memory and takes a faster processing time. We extract different textured features, statistical information such as mean, variance and histogram, from low frequency sub-band. Then we measure the distances between the query image and the images in a database in terms of these features. To obtain good retrieval performance, we use the first feature (mean and variance of wavelet coefficients) to filter out most of the unlikely images. The rest of the images are considered to be candidate images. Then we apply the second feature (histogram of wavelet coefficient) to rank all the candidate images. To evaluate the algorithm, we create various distorted image databases using MIT VisTex texture images and PICS natural images. Through simulations, we demonstrate that our method can achieve performance satisfactorily in terms of the retrieval accuracy as well as the both memory requirement and computational complexity. Therefore it is expected to provide good retrieval solution for JPEG-2000 using wavelet transform.

Chongmyung-tang(CMT, 聰明湯), oriental herbal medicine which consists of Polygaglae Radix(遠志), Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) and Hoelen(白茯神) has effect on amnesia, dementia. In order to evaluate effect of CMT on memory and learning in mice, CMT extract was used for studies. This paper describes the effects of CMT extract on memory and learning processes by using the passive and active avoidance performance tests, novel object recognition task and water maze task. The CMT extract ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in the passive avoidance responses but did not affect ambulatory activity of normal mice. These results suggest that CMT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairment. CMT extract decreased spontaneous motor activity(SMA) in the latter sessions of memory registration in active avoidance responses. These results suggest that CMT has partly transquilizing or antianxiety effects. In novel object recognition task to measure visual recognition memory, CMT-administered mice enhanced in long term memory for 1-3 days. In water maze task to measure spatial learning, which requires the activation of NMDA receptors in the hippocampus, spatial learning in CMT-administered mice was faster than in wild-type mice. These results suggest that CMT enhances memory and activates NMDA receptors.
Recebt neuropsychological studies on neurobiological bases of learning and memory in humans are reviewed. At present, cognitive psychologists belive that memory is not a unitary system. But copmosed of several independent subsystems. Adoption this perspective, this paper summarized findings regarding what kinds of memory discorders result from lesions of which brain areas and which brain areas are activated by what kind of learning/memory tasks. Short-term memory seems to involve widespread areas around the boundaries among the parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes, depending on the type of the type of the tasks and the way of presentation of the stimuli. Implicit memory,a subsystem of long-term memory,is not a unitary system itself. Thus, brain areas involved in implicit memory tasks used. It is well-known that medial temporal lobe is necessary for formation(i,e.,consolidation)of explicit memory, another subsystem of long-term memory. Storage and/or retrieval of episodic and semantic memory involve temporal neocortex. Perfromtal cortex seemas to be involved in several aspects of memory such as short term memory and retrieval of espisodic and semantic memory. Finally, a popular view on the locus of long-term memory storage is described.
This study tests the hypotheses that city slogan reduces the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan from the long term memory and that some variables moderate this effect, using the experimental method. The theoretical basis for the hypotheses is from the structure of the long term memory and the principle of memory retrieval discussed in ANM(Associative Network Model). For the test of hypotheses, the study adopted 4 experimental groups (2(slogan relevance: high or low) * 2(slogan concreteness: high or low)) and 1 control group. Each experimental group was exposed to one slogan corresponding to its condition while the control group was not. Then, the recall score was compared among experimental and control groups. One hundred and seventy-four undergraduate students belonging to the college of the authors participated in the study. The sample group was between 18 and 27 years of age, with an average of 22.4 years, and 54 percent comprised males. Results showed that city slogan had a negative effect on the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan in most experimental conditions. This effect was more evident when the slogan had high relevance or high concreteness. But the main effect did not appear when the slogan had low relevance and low concreteness.
Assuming that not all background music in advertising function as effective retrieval cues for the advertised messages, this study proposes that we should be able to distinguish the retrieval cue effect of music from the simple ad exposure effect. This study tries to identify which specific characteristics of music are related to the retrieval cue effect. Our experiment focuses on congruency and familiarity of music as key characteristics of music which affect the effectiveness of the music's role as a retrieval cue for the advertised messages. We used four groups of subjects to test the retrieval cue effect of the background music. Each group was exposed to one of the four different types of background music and was again sub-divided into an experimental and a control group (i.e., a total of eight independent sub-groups were included in the experiment.) The first two sub-groups were exposed to the experimental advertisement with the background music of high congruency and high familiarity. After the ad exposure, the background music was provided as a retrieval cue to only one of the two sub-groups. Comparison of the memory performance between the two sub-groups will reveal the net retrieval cue effect of the music of high congruency and high familiarity. Similarly, another two sub-groups watched the same ad but with the background music of high congruency and low familiarity. Also the same ad but with the music of low congruency/ high familiarity was shown to another two sub-groups and that of low congruency and low familiarity music was to another two. Among the two sub-groups with the same music, only one group had the music cue at the memory tasks. One hundred and seventy four undergraduate students at the college of one of authors in Asia participated in the study. Their ages ranged from 18 to 24 with a median of 20. The sample was composed of 51.7 percent male subjects. They were randomly assigned to each of the eight sub-group. The results show that the music highly congruent with the advertised message facilitates the message retrieval, while the low congruency music cue does not. It was also found that the low familiarity music cue improves memory performance only when the music is perceived as congruent with the advertised message. From a theoretical and practical perspective, this study provides boundary conditions for effective retrieval and suggests that the congruent music specifically created for the ad is a more effective retrieval cue than other types of music cues.

Recently, flash memory is becoming popular as storage system to store and retrieve multimedia files. However, there are few researches about multimedia file system for flash memory based storage devices. We have been designing and developing a novel multimedia file systems for flash memory. In this paper, we describe the semantics of real-time retrieval of multimedia data and present scheduling scheme to guarantee the real-time requirements in our multimedia file system.
Objective : The effect Saenggitang (GT), which has been used for amnesia, in Oriental Medicine, on memory and learning ability, was investigated. Methods : Hot water extracts (HWE) of SGT were used for the studies. In passive avoidance performances (step through test), active avoidance performances (lever press test), Motor activity, pentobarbital-induced sleep, 20 and 50 mg/100g of SGT-HWE ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by 40% ethanol. Results : The SGT-HWE did not affect the ambulatory activity of normal mice in normal condition. 20 and 50 mg/100g of SGT-HWE enhanced contextual fear memory, but not cued fear memory in a fear conditioning task, which requires the activation of the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartase) receptor. SGT-HWE did not affect the motor activity measured by the titling type ambulometer test performed immediately and 24 hr after the administration. SGT-HWE prolonged the sleeping time induced by 50 mg/kg pentobarbital in mice and decreased SMA (spontaneous motor activity) in active avoidance performances (lever press test). Conclusion : These results indicate that the SGT-HWE have an improving effect on the memory retrieval disability induced by ethanol and may act as a stimulating factor for activating the NMDA receptor. and the SGT-HWE has a tranquilizing and anti-anxiety action.

Recent experiments investigating the analgesic or anti-stress effects of electro-acupuncture provide extensive evidence that opioid or stress hormone system is involved in those effects, respectively. It has been also suggested that opioid or stress hormones modulate long-term memory consolidation or retrieval in animals and human subjects. This article reviews the possibilitythat electroacupuncture can modulate memory consolidation or retrieval. The release of serum cortisol is enhanced or reduced by high-frequency or low-frequency electroacupuncture, respectively. Also the release of beta endorphin and enkephalin is enhanced by low-frequency electroacupuncture and the release of dynorphin is enhanced by high-frequency electroacupunture. The memory consolidation is enhanced by post-training injection of Glucocorticoids, Naloxone or Dynorphin. So this review suggests strongly that memory consolidation can be modulated by electroacupuncture.
Retrieving temporal information of encoded events is one of the core control processes in episodic memory. Despite much prior neuroimaging research on episodic retrieval, little is known about how large-scale connectivity patterns are involved in the retrieval of sequentially organized episodes. Task-related functional connectivity multivariate pattern analysis was used to distinguish the different sequential retrieval. In this study, participants performed temporal episodic memory tasks in which they were required to retrieve the encoded items in either the forward or backward direction. While separately parsed local networks did not yield substantial efficiency in classification performance, the large-scale patterns of interactivity across the cortical and sub-cortical brain regions implicated in both the cognitive control of memory and goal-directed cognitive processes encompassing lateral and medial prefrontal regions, inferior parietal lobules, middle temporal gyrus, and caudate yielded high discriminative power in classification of temporal retrieval processes. These findings demonstrate that mnemonic control processes across cortical and subcortical regions are recruited to re-experience temporally-linked series of memoranda in episodic memory and are mirrored in the qualitatively distinct global network patterns of functional connectivity.
Purpose: Episodic memory is described as an 'autobiographical' memory responsible for storing a record of the events in our lives. We performed functional brain activation study using ${H_2}^{15}O$ PET to reveal the neural basis of the encoding and the retrieval of episodic memory in human normal volunteers. Materials and Methods: Four repeated ${H_2}^{15}O$ PET scans with two reference and two activation tasks were performed on 6 normal volunteers to activate brain areas engaged in encoding and retrieval with verbal materials. Images from the same subject were spatially registered and normalized using linear and nonlinear transformation. Using the means and variances for every condition which were adjusted with analysis of covariance, t-statistic analysis were performed voxel-wise. Results: Encoding of episodic memory activated the opercular and triangular parts of left inferior frontal gyrus, right prefrontal cortex, medial frontal area, cingulate gyrus, posterior middle and inferior temporal gyri, and cerebellum, and both primary visual and visual association areas. Retrieval of episodic memory activated the triangular part of left inferior frontal gyrus and inferior temporal gyrus, right prefrontal cortex and medial temporal area, and both cerebellum and primary visual and visual association areas. The activations in the opercular part of left inferior frontal gyrus and the right prefrontal cortex meant the essential role of these areas in the encoding and retrieval of episodic memory. Conclusion: We could localize the neural basis of the encoding and retrieval of episodic memory using ${H_2}^{15}O$ PET, which was partly consistent with the hypothesis of hemispheric encoding/retrieval asymmetry.
