The previous investigations of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity in the memory retrieval tasks demonstrated that event-related potentials (ERP) during recollection showed different durations and the peak levels from those without recollection. However, it has been unknown that recollection in memory retrieval also modulates high-frequency brain rhythms as well as establishes large-scale synchronization across different cortical areas. In this study, we examined the spectral components of the EEG signals, especially the gamma bands (20-80Hz), measured during the memory retrieval tasks. Specifically, we focused on two major spectral components: first, we evaluated the temporal patterns of the power spectral density before and after the onset of the memory retrieval task; second, we estimated phase synchrony between all possible pairs of EEG channels to evaluate large-scale synchronization. Fourteen healthy subjects performed the memory retrieval task in the virtual reality environment where they selected whether or not t he present item was seen in the previous training period. When the subjects viewed the unseen items, the middle gamma power (40-60Hz) appeared to increase 200-500ms after stimulus onset while the low gamma power (20Hz) was suppressed all the way through the post-stimulus period 150ms after onset. The degree of phase synchronization in this low gamma level, however, increased when the subjects fetched the item from memory. This suggests that phase synchrony analysis might reveal different aspects of the memory retrieval process than the gamma power, providing additional information to the inference on the brain dynamics during memory retrieval.
The cache structure, which is designed for assuring fast accesses to frequently accessed data, resides on the various levels of computer system hierarchies. Many studies on this cache structure have been conducted and thus many page-replacement algorithms have been proposed. Most of page-replacement algorithms are designed on the basis of heuristic methods by using their own criteria such as how recently pages are accessed and how often they are accessed. This data-retrieval process in computer systems is analogous to human memory retrieval process since the retrieval process of human memory depends on frequency and recency of the retrieval events as well. A recent study regarding human memory cognition revealed that the possibility of the retrieval success and the retrieval latency have a strong correlation with the frequency and recency of the previous retrieval events. In this paper, we propose a novel page-replacement algorithm by utilizing the knowledge from the recent research regarding human memory cognition. Through a set of experiments, we demonstrated that our new method presents better hit-ratio than the LRFU algorithm which has been known as the best performing page-replacement algorithm for DBMS caches.
In this paper, as one of these efforts for making the intelligent data mining system we propose the Associative frame of the memory according to the following three steps. First, the structured frame for performing the main brain function should be made. In this frame, the concepts of learning memory and episode memory are considered. Second, the learning mechanism for data acquisition and storing mechanism in the memory frame are provided. The obtained data are arranged and stored in the memory following the rules of the structured memory frame. Third, it is the last step of processing the inference and knowledge retrieval function using the stored knowledge in the associative memory frame. This system is applied to the area for estimating the purchasing degree from the type of customer's tastes, the pattern of commodities and the evaluation of a company.

We investigated the neural correlates of accurate eyewitness memory retrieval using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. We analyzed oxygenated hemoglobin ($HbO_2$) concentration in the prefrontal cortex during eyewitness memory retrieval task and examined regional $HbO_2$ differences between observed objects (target) and unobserved objects (lure). We found that target objects elicited increased activation in the bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, which is known for monitoring retrieval processing via bottom-up attentional processing. Our results suggest bottom-up attentional mechanisms could be different during accurate eyewitness memory retrieval. These findings indicate that investigating retrieval mechanisms using functional near-infrared spectroscopy might be useful for establishing an accurate eyewitness recognition model.
Several lines of evidence indicate that adenosine $A_{2A}$ agonist disrupts spatial working memory. However, it is unclear which stages of learning and memory are affected by the stimulation of adenosine $A_{2A}$ receptor. To clarify these points, we employed CV-1808 as adenosine $A_{2A}$ agonist and investigated its effects on acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval phases of learning and memory using passive avoidance and the Morris water maze tasks. During the acquisition phase, CV-1808 (2-phenylaminoadenosine, 1 and 2 mg/kg, i.p.) decreased the latency time in passive avoidance task and the mean savings in the Morris water maze task, respectively. During the consolidation and retrieval phase tests, CV-1808 did not exhibited any effects on latency time in passive avoidance task and the mean savings in the Morris water maze task. These results suggest that CV-1808 as an adenosine $A_{2A}$ agonist impairs memory acquisition but not consolidation or retrieval.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop spaced retrieval training as a nursing intervention for patients having an mild alzheimer's disease and to determine the effects of the program on their memory and cognitive function across training sessions. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pre test-post test design was used in this study. Participants were recruited from a local community: 14 patients were allocated into experimental group and 12 patients were allocated into control group. The experimental group was asked to participate in spaced retrieval training over 4 weeks, with seven times a week and 1 hour a session based. The study was conducted from June 20, 2011 to July 17, 2011. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test and t-test using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: After spaced retrieval training, the experimental group showed significant increases in scores for memory (t=12.40, p<.001) and cognitive function (t=7.69, p<.001) in comparison to the control group. Conclusion: Spaced retrieval training was effective in increasing cognitive function and memory of patients having mild alzheimer's disease. Therefore spaced retrieval training could be benefit the mild alzheimer's disease.
Objectives:This study was to compare verbal memory ability among patients with schizophrenia, bipolar manic patients and unipolar depressive patients, and to understand their charicteristics of memory process. Methods:All subjects were hospitalized patients and had been interviewed by using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV(SCID). Schizophrenic patients(N=40), bipolar manic patients(N=17), and unipolar depressive patients(N=20) were assessed with K-AVLT for verbal memory and with K-WAIS for verbal IQ. Three groups were compared regarding total immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, learning curve, memory retention, and retrieval efficiency under controlled verbal IQ. Multiple regression analysis was performed to find which clinical factors have an influence on verbal memory ability. Results:In MANCOVA, differences of verbal memory test scores among the groups were statistically significant(F=1.800, p<.05). In post hoc analysis, Patients with schizophrenia and bipolar mania showed poorer performance in immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency than unipolar depres- sive patients. And schizophrenics performed poorly in delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency than nonpsychotic affective disorder group, but no difference in total immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency between the schizophrenic group and the psychotic affective group. Conclusions:These results partially confirm previous reports of verbal memory ability among major psychiatric disorders. Our results showed that psychotic symptoms were related with verbal memory, and longer duration of illness was related with poorer performance in schizophrenia and unipolar depression.
The present study was designed to investigate the effect of the difficulty level of retrieval practice and the association strength of categories and stimuli within categories on memory inhibition. Most of the studies have investigated whether inhibition was occurred by manipulating the degree of association strength, emotion value or physical characteristics of non-retrieval practice words within the retrieval practice category. Therefore, it was necessary to study how inhibition occurs according to the degree of difficulty of retrieval stimuli during retrieval practice. The difficulty of retrieval was manipulated into three levels: difficult condition, normal condition, and easy condition through the degree of presentation of consonants and vowels of words during retrieval learning. Additionally, the strength of association between categories and words within categories was manipulated. In previous studies, retrieval-induced forgetting occurred under conditions where the association strength between categories and words within the categories was strong. On the other hand, retrieval-induced forgetting did not occur under conditions where the association strength between categories and words within the categories was weak. The present study, if the inhibition process differs according to the difficulty of retrieval, the possibility of different results from previous studies was explored according to the difference in the strength of association with the category. As a result of the study, in the condition of strong association strength, retrieval-induced forgetting was observed under normal and difficult retrieval difficulty conditions. Whereas retrieval-induced forgetting was not observed under conditions of easy retrieval difficulty condition. In the condition of weak association strength, retrieval-induced forgetting tended to occur under difficult retrieval difficulty conditions. Whereas retrieval-induced forgetting was not observed under conditions of normal and easy retrieval difficulty condition. These results suggest that memory inhibition may appear differently depending on the difficulty of retrieval.

Due to the explosive growth of multimedia speech data, how to protect the privacy of speech data and how to efficiently retrieve speech data have become a hot spot for researchers in recent years. In this paper, we proposed an encrypted speech retrieval scheme based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network and deep hashing. This scheme not only achieves efficient retrieval of massive speech in cloud environment, but also effectively avoids the risk of sensitive information leakage. Firstly, a novel speech encryption algorithm based on 4D quadratic autonomous hyperchaotic system is proposed to realize the privacy and security of speech data in the cloud. Secondly, the integrated LSTM network model and deep hashing algorithm are used to extract high-level features of speech data. It is used to solve the high dimensional and temporality problems of speech data, and increase the retrieval efficiency and retrieval accuracy of the proposed scheme. Finally, the normalized Hamming distance algorithm is used to achieve matching. Compared with the existing algorithms, the proposed scheme has good discrimination and robustness and it has high recall, precision and retrieval efficiency under various content preserving operations. Meanwhile, the proposed speech encryption algorithm has high key space and can effectively resist exhaustive attacks.
Several lines of evidence indicate that scopolamine as a nonselective muscarinic antagonist disrupts object recognition performance and spatial working memory when administered systemically. In the present study, we investigated the different effects of scopolamine on acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval phases of object recognition performance and spatial working memory using the object recognition and the Morris water maze tasks in mice. In the acquisition phase test, scopolamine decreased recognition index on object recognition task and the trial 1 to trial 2 differences on Morris water maze task. In the consolidation and retrieval phase tests, scopolamine also decreased recognition index on object recognition task, where as scopolamine did not exhibited any effects on the Morris water maze task.
