The paper presents the effect of operating temperatures and flow rates on the distillate flux that can be obtained from a hydrophobic membrane having the characteristics: pore size of 0.15 ㎛; thickness of 130 ㎛; and 85% porosity. That membrane in the present investigation could be the direct contact (DCMD) or the air-gap membrane distillation (AGMD). To model numerically the membrane distillation processes, the two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is used for the DCMD and AGMD cases here. In this work, DCMD and AGMD models have been validated with the experimental data using different flows (Parallel and Counter-current flows) in non-steady-state situations. A good agreement is obtained between the present results and those of the experimental data in the literature. The new approach in the present numerical modeling has allowed examining effects of the nature of materials (Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers, copolymers, and blends) used on thermal properties. Moreover, the effect of the area surface of the membrane (0.021 to 3.15 ㎡) is investigated to explore both the laminar and the turbulent flow regimes. The obtained results found that copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) (80/20) is more effective than the other materials of membrane distillation (MD). The mass flux and thermal efficiency reach 193.5 (g/㎡s), and 83.29 % using turbulent flow and an effective area of 3.1 ㎡, respectively. The increase of feed inlet temperatures and its flow rate, with the reduction of cold temperatures and its flow rate are very effective for increasing distillate water flow in MD applications.
Ammonia nitrogen can be effectively recovered from livestock manure waste, etc. by using the gas permeable membrane technology. In this case, ammonia gas in the waste passes through the pores in one-side of membrane, impregnated in waste, and then reach the opposite side of the membrane. The permeated ammonia gas molecules are captured and recovered by acid (such as sulfuric acid) in the solution existing on the opposite side of the membrane. In order to improve ammonia nitrogen removals in the inlet part, high pH should be maintained in the feed waste including ammonia nitrogen to recover, which requires the cost of the chemical. To resolve this issue, previous studies tested various methods, for example, utilization of cheap calcium hydroxide or aeration together with inhibition of unwanted nitrification. The gas permeable membranes used for the recovery of ammonia nitrogen may be characterized, not only by proper heat and chemical resistance, but also by hydrophobicity, allowing selective ammonia gas permeation through the hydrophobic membrane pores. Future research should consider the relevant pilot or upscale processes using on-site wastes with various properties, and identify the optimal design/operation conditions as well as economic feasibility improvement plans.
The present study has been carried out to investigate the pumping characteristics for different figures of inlet and outlet in diffuser/nozzle based on piezoelectric micropump. Piezoelectric micropump system consists of several parts like a pumping chamber, diffuser/nozzle, piezoelectric element and tubes. Parts of the micropump connected with diffuser/nozzle and tubes have been analyzed.. The magnified parts have been classified into two different models based on their resistance. These models have been further classified into six models with each one having three different angles at the magnified parts. Each model has been compared and analyzed using the simulation tool, namely, CFD-ACE depending on their flow rates and characteristics.

The syngas produced from coal gasification is cooled down for gas cleaning by a syngas cooler that produces steam. Due to the presence of fly slag in the syngas, erosion, slagging and corrosion especially in the upper part of the syngas cooler may cause major operational problems. This study investigates the flow, heat transfer and particle behaviors in the syngas cooler of a 300MWe IGCC plant by using computational fluid dynamics. For various operational loads and geometry, the gas and particle flows directly impinged on the wall opposite to the syngas inlet, which may lead to erosion of the membrane wall. In the evaporate channels inside the syngas cololr, the particle flows were concentrated more on the outer channel where slagging becomes more serious. The heat transfer to the wall was mainly by convection which was larger on the side wall below the inlet level.

This study has been conducted to investigate pumping characteristics of diffuser/nozzle based piezoelectric micropumps. The micropumps include a piezo disk (an actuator), a chamber and a set of diffuser and nozzle. Flow in the current micropumps is controlled by a set of diffuser and nozzle, not by a nap valve. The diffuser/nozzle based micropumps are more reliable in operation and are easier in manufacturing than the flap valve based micropumps. The flow rates of the piezoelectric micropumps have been closely analyzed with a numerical calculation. It has been found that the positions of the inlet and outlet of the micropump can influence the performance of the diffuser/nozzle based piezoelectric micropumps. This study may provide fundamental understanding for the design and analysis of the piezoelectric micropumps.
As the spacer in the membrane module provide the channel space to flow the feed solution smoothly and induce the flow turbulence, it could help to reduce both the concentration polarization and to take the long-term operation of membrane modules with high permeate flux by mixing the accumulated contaminants on the membrane surface into the bulk solution. In this study, the concentration distribution in membrane module with respect to the spacers which have the cross-sectional shapes of circle, cross, diamond and hexagon, the angles of spacer configuration, solute rejection and permeate flux were interpreted and optimized numerically using the "COMSOL Multiphysics" software. The concentration on the membrane surface was kept the lowest level for the cross-shape among the above four types of spacers. Also the 30 degree spacer configuration was showed as the most efficient case. The concentrations on the membrane surface at the module outlet for without spacer and the cross shape with the 30 degree spacer configuration were 2.09 and 1.29 times higher than those at inlet, respectively. The reduction effect of concentration polarization increased rapidly as the permeate flux increased.

In this study a numerical analysis has been conducted for the flow characteristics and pumping performance of a piezoelectric-based micropump with electromagnetic resistance exerted on electrically conducting fluid. Here, electromagnetic resistance is alternately applied at the inlet and outlet with alternately applied magnetic fields in association with the reciprocal membrane motion of the piezoelectric-based micropump. A model of Prescribed Deformation is used for the description of the membrane motion. The internal flow characteristics and pumping performance are investigated with the variation of magnetic flux density, tube size, displacement of membrane and the frequency of the membrane. It turns out that the current micropump has a wide range of pumping flow rate compared with diffuser-nozzle based micropumps.

It is possible for humans to breathe underwater using dissolved oxygen. However, unlike fish, humans need large amounts of oxygen to breathe underwater. Water generally contains small amounts of dissolved oxygen. To get enough dissolved oxygen from water, great volumes of it should be supplied into a separation device. If exhalation gases are used, the amounts of water supplied into the membrane can be decreased. However, the characteristics of exhalation gases after passage through the separation device need to be investigated. To reuse the exhalation gases, the concentration of carbon dioxide should be decreased. A compressor is needed to supply the exhalation gases because of the high pressure generated in the membrane inlet. However, compressors require a lot of power and are heavy, so it is not proper to get the portable separation device. A system without the compressor is needed. If the pressure of the position mixed from the exhalation is less than atmosphere, the compressor is not needed. In this thesis, characteristics of the gases which are mixed with exhalation gases and separated from water after passing the membrane are investigated. The compositions of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen are measured with the gas chromatography. The effects of water and exhalation gas flow rates on characteristics of gases separated from water after the membrane are showed.
The transport of selected salts of sulphuric acid (cobalt, copper, iron(II), manganese, nickel and zinc sulphate) through an anion-exchange membrane Neosepta-AFN was investigated in a counter-current continuous dialyzer at various salt concentrations and volumetric liquid flow rates. The basic transport characteristics - the rejection coefficient of salt and the permeability of the membrane - were calculated from measurements at steady state. The salt concentration in model mixtures was changed in the limits from 0.1 to 1.0 kmol $m^{-3}$ and the volumetric liquid flow rate of the inlet streams was in the limits from $8{\times}10^{-9}$ to $24{\times}10^{-9}m^3\;s^{-1}$. Under the experimental conditions given, the rejection coefficient of salts tested was in the range from 65% to 94%. The lowest values were obtained for iron(II) sulphate, while the highest for copper sulphate. The maximum rejection of salt was reached at the highest volumetric liquid flow rate and the highest salt concentration in the feed. The permeability ($P_A$) of the Neosepta-AFN membrane for the individual salts was in the range from $0.49{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ to $1.8{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ and it can be described by the following series: $P_{FeSO_4}$ < $P_{NiSO_4}$ < $P_{ZnSO_4}$ < $P_{CoSO_4}$ < $P_{MnSO_4}$ < $P_{CuSO_4}$. The permeability of the membrane was strongly affected by the salt concentration in the feed - it decreased with an increasing salt concentration.

A coolant operating condition in al fuel cell stack was an important factor to determine the temperature distribution which affected the fuel cell performance and relative humidity. In this study, the fuel cell performance was evaluated as a function of the coolant flow rate with the range of $0.1{\sim}0.8$ liter/min cell and the coolant inlet temperature of $20{\sim}82^{\circ}C$. The cell temperature increased with increasing the coolant inlet temperature and with decreasing the coolant flow rate. The coolant inlet temperature and flow rate to maintain the better performance of the fuel cell were in the range of $45{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ and $0.2{\sim}0.4$ liter/min cell, respectively. The experimental results showed that the optimal heat removal rate from the stack by coolant was $0.4{\sim}0.6W/cm^2$ cell.
