$H_2$ permeation flux though a $100{\mu}m-thick$ Pd-Ru (6wt%) membrane was measured at various temperatures and pressures. The permeation flux followed the Sievert's law and thus the rate-limiting step of the hydrogen permeation was the bulk atomic diffusion step. The activation energy of the permeation flux was obtained at 17.9 kJ/mol and this value is consistent with those published previously. While no degradation of the permeation flux wasfound in the membrane exposed to the $O_2$ and $CO_2$ environments for 100 hours, the membrane exposed to $N_2$ environment for 100 hours showed the degradation in the $H_2$ permeation flux. The $H_2$ permeation was decreased as the exposure temperature to $N_2$, environment was increased. The $H_2$ permeation flux was fully recovered after the membrane was kept in the $H_2$ environment for certain time. The permeation flux degradation might be caused by the formation of metal nitride on the membrane surface.
Development of shale gas has drawn increasing attention since it is one of promising alternative energy resources. However, contamination of groundwater and surface water during the extraction of shale gas is becoming a serious environmental issues, which brings the needs to treat wastewater generated from hydraulic fracking. In this study, the feasibility of membrane distillation (MD) for the treatment of shale gas wastewater was investigated using a laboratory scale experimental setup. Flat-sheet MD membranes were used to treat produced water from a shale gas well in the United States. Different configurations such as direct contact MD (DCMD) and air gap MD (AGMD) were compared in terms of flux and fouling propensity. The foulants on the surface of the membranes were examined. The results suggest that MD can treat the shale gas produced water containing more than 200,000 mg/L of total dissolved solids, which is impossible by other technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO). In this study, we investigated the possibility of processing and characterization of shale gas produce wastewater using membrane distillation. Laboratory scale membrane distillation experimental device was developed. It was compared the flat-sheet direct contact membrane distillation and flat-sheet air gap membrane distillation. AGMD flux in lower than the flux of DCMD, it was expected that the contamination caused by organic matters.
Carbon monoxide(CO) is one of the contamination source in reformed hydrogen fuel with an influence on performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC). The studies of CO injection presented here give information about poisoning and recovery processes. The aim of this research is to investigate cell performance decline due to carbon monoxide impurity in hydrogen. Performance of PEM fuel cell was investigated using current vs. potential experiment, long time(10 hours) test, cyclic feeding test and electrochemical impedance spectra. The concentrations of carbon monoxide were changed up to 10 ppm. Performance degradation due to carbon monoxide contamination in anode fuel was observed at high concentration of carbon monoxide. The CO gas showed influence on the charge transfer reaction. The performance recovery was confirmed in long time test when pure hydrogen was provided for 1 hour after carbon monoxide had been supplied. The result of this study could be used as a basis of various reformation process design and fuel quality determination.
Industrialization has given humanity many benefits, such as material abundance and conveniences. However, it has also caused detrimental side effects to the environment which are becoming a global problem. During the 1960's, the national economic scale in Korea was expanded and personal lifestyles rapidly improved. These improvements also caused environmental problems such as water contamination. Water contamination caused by old, worn water pipes, harmful materials and deposits from the water purification processes decreased the tap water quality, causing unpleasant odors and tastes. Due to poor maintenance of the reservoir facilities of tap water quality, citizens lost their faith in the water quality. In the long term, it made us worry about the health of our nation's citizens (6,16).
In this study, we present the salt repellent behavior of superhydrophobic filtration membrane. Bio-fouling or mineral-fouling is the main factor of decreasing the performance of filtration membrane. The superhydrophobic modification of filtration membrane using PECVD (Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) is introduced. The oxygen plasma was introduced for developing nano hairy structures and subsequent HMDSO (Hexamethyldisiloxane) coating was used for enhancing low surface energy. Saline water evaporation test was carried out to evaluate the difference of contamination of salt on superhydrophobic and moderately hydrophobic filtration membrane. EDS and EPMA were used for visualizing the residue of salt crystal.
This gas analysis data come from the hydrogen which is produced by proton exchange membrane. Main impurities of hydrogen are methane, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The concentration of impurities is ranged between 0.0191 to $315{\mu}mol/mol$ for each impurity. Methane contamination is believed from the electrode reaction between carbon doped electrode and produced hydrogen. Nitrogen contamination should take place the sampling process error, not from PEM hydrogen Production system.
As water resources are limited and legal regulations are strengthened, there is a growing need to reuse residuals in WTP(Water Treatment Plant). In this study, membrane filtration system was constructed and its operation method was studied for water quality stabilization and reuse of WTP residuals. The operation parameters were stable for 1 year and 6 months. Membrane fouling was identified as particulate pollution (activated carbon) and inorganic pollution (manganese). The membrane system was operated steadily with raw water of high concentration SS(Suspended solid) containing activated carbon because membrane fouling was reduced by the effect of End-Free type. In the case of inorganic contamination, dissolved manganese eluted by chemicals and acted as a membrane fouling source, and the operating conditions for minimizing membrane fouling. were confirmed by newly developing application methods and types of cleaning chemicals. Based on the results, design parameters for reducing manganese membrane fouling were derived.
The pilot study was conducted to (i) investigate the ability of various membrane integrity monitoring methods to detect changes in membrane integrity during operation, and (ii) determine the impact of membrane damage on microbial removal by microfiltration. Two variations of air pressure hold tests were investigated for direct integrity monitoring: pressure decay (PD) and diffusive air flow (DAF) tests which are most commonly used integrity tests for microfiltration (MF) membranes. Both PD and DAF tests were sensitive enough to detect one damaged fiber out of 66,000 under field operaing conditions. Indirect integrity monitoring such as turbidity and particle counting, however, responded poorly to defects in membrane systems. Microbial challenge study was performed using both new and deliberately damaged membranes, as well as varying the state of fouling of the membrane. This study demonstrated that MF membrane with nominal pore size $0.2{\mu}m$ was capable of removing various pathogens including coliform, spore, and cryptosporidium, at the level required by drinking water regulations, even when high operating pressures were applied. A sharp decrease in average log reduction value (LRV) was observed when one fiber was damaged, emphasizing the importance of membrane integrity in control of microbial contamination.
Heavy metal contamination has attracted considerable attention during recent decades due to the potential risk brought about for human beings and the environment. Several adsorbent materials are utilized for the purification of contaminated water resources among which chitosan is considered as an appropriate alternative. Copper is a heavy metal contaminants found in several industrial wastewaters and its adsorption on porous and macroporous chitosan membranes is investigated in this study. Membranes are prepared by phase inversion and particulate leaching method and their morphology is characterized using SEM analysis. Batch adsorption experiments are performed and it is found that copper adsorption on macroporous chitosan membrane is higher than porous membrane. The iso-steric heat of adsorption was determined by analyzing the variations of temperature to investigate its effect on adsorption characteristics of macroporous chitosan membranes. Furthermore, desorption experiments were studied using NaCl and EDTA as eluants. The mechanism of copper adsorption was also investigated using XPS spectroscopy which confirms simultaneous occurrence of chelation and electrostatic adsorption mechanisms.

We know very well the importance of water. Recently, we perceive the truth that water influence the quality of products and we must pay for it. Besides, we recognize why the water treatment is indispensable for life as well as industries. The variation of environment changes the natural resources and threatens the human life. Now, we cannot get water freely from nature. We should find new processes which are effective and inexpensive. We believe that the membrane technology can suggest the new way of water treatment. I'd like to explain the situation of water resource and the membrane processes by UF/MF membranes. I'll also introduce several case studies in this lecture. Till now, about 10 MF/UF systems were established in Korea. Of course, the usage of MF/UF for water treatment is beginning stage in Korea. But the future prospect is very good. Korean government has been developed various kinds of membrane processes for the purpose of drinking water, water reuse, development of new water resources and water related technologies, etc. In near future, maybe we will meet serious water problems, water deficiency and contamination. Fortunetely, we can suggest the membrane process for solving those problems. Membrane technology will be the base of clean technology.
