  • Objectives : The purpose of our study was to discuss about the scholarship value and contents of the transcription of Correction of the Classic of Materia Medica that was obtained recently. Methods : We analysed the transcription of Correction of the Classic of Materia Medica itself and compared form and matter with Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica[神農本草經], Compendium of Materia Medica[本草綱目]. Results : 1. It is obvious that the transcription of Correction of the Classic of Materia Medica is one of the book works of Lee Gyujun. 2. The transcription of Correction of the Classic of Materia Medica was written to recover the original figure of Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica standing on Compendium of Materia Medica. Lee Gyujun corrected qi, flavor and main effects of herbs according to his medical sight, and classified herbs into three grade. Conclusions : The transcription of Correction of the Classic of Materia Medica is not an original book but an interim book on working process. But it reflects the medical sight of Lee Gyujun and the medical level of those days sufficiently. Also it is the only study of Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica in Chosun dynasty.

  • The practice of studying "黃帝內經" is one that is deeply rooted throughout Korean history. The main textbook used in educational institutions as early as the Era of the Three States, it was also actively examined. A doctor examination system was introduced in the Koryo dynasty, which reinforced "Internal Classic"'s status as an important subject of study. Following the nation-wide acceptance of Confucism, scholar-physicians came to be and this book was studied as an important scripture. By Chosun dynasty, the entire medical systems becomes centered around "Internal Classic. Internal Classic is not only included in medical examination manual written in the period of Sejong's rein but was cited in many medical texts published during this time span including Euibangyoochi, Hyngyakjipseongbang, and thus can bee seen as the conceptual basis of medicine. In late Chosun dynasty with the emergence of the Korean Traditional Medicine's scripture, The Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine, "Internal Classic" is spotlighted as a scripture of importance among medical families. Lee Kyu-Jun, a doctor of the Japanese occupation era, examined "Internal Classic" based on a theory called fuyang theory and produced a creative medical theory.

  • Objectives : I'd like to introduce a Korean medical scientist, Lee Gyoojoon (李圭晙, 1855-1923)'s achievements about Huangdi's Internal Classic (黃帝內經, HIC) to examine the Section of Viscera and Bowels to inspect the Medical Classics (稽經藏府篇, SVBIM) of the Double grinded Medical Mirror (醫鑑重磨, DMM), which is a medical book published in 1922, his last studies. And I'd like to describe its meaning of medical history. Methods : For this, I compared the DMM with two primary texts, the representative medical books of Joseon dynasty, Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (東醫寶鑑, TMEM) and Lee's former research result of HIC, Major Essentials of Huangdi's Internal Classic Plain Question (黃帝內經素問大要, MEHIC), in the aspects of the original text, annotation, editing, attached theses, and so on. Results : Lee Gyoojoon criticized the TMEM in two aspects. First, it was unfocused and miscellaneous, second, it intended to help Yin Qi (陰氣) and reduce Yang Qi (陽氣) so that it regards a prime mover, Yang Qi, as an enemy. In order to solve these problems he deleted miscellaneous articles and sort out the points to accord with the HIC. As a result, he had written the Section of SVBIM of the DMM in the form of revising the subtitles or refuting the contents of TMEM and quoted the partial texts of MEHIC to be written by the view of Supporting Yang Qi (扶陽). Conclusions : Lee Gyoojoon proposed the Supporting Yang Qi medicine to preserve the Heart fire (心火) based on his lifelong Neo-Confucianism (性理學) study. The Section of SVBIM of the DMM showed how to apply his medical theory, which is achieved by the study of the medical classic HIC to real clinical medicine through a medium of the TMEM. In addition, it could explain concretely how the Confucianists studied the medicine and how Confucianism can impact to the development of medical theory.

  • Objectives: The objectives of this study are to determine both what information Korean Medicine(KM) doctors want from medical classics and how classic KM knowledge should be structured. Methods: KM doctor survey was conducted in October 2012 via E-mail to determine what information Korean Medicine doctors want to collect from a larger volume of existing classics. Specialist survey was made in October 2012 through questionnaire and 8 workshops were held between April 2012 ~ February 2013 to discuss how to reorganize classic KM knowledge. Results: With two surveys and 8 workshops, we built a conceptualization of the classic KM knowledge system for KM practice. KM doctors wanted to engage with the design of KM knowledge system informed by authentic medical classics, and hoped that more information on common disorders would be added to the table of contents of classic KM books than now. A comprehensive knowledge system was also required to maximize information sharing. Conclusions: Future KM knowledge systems need to be more comprehensive and include more information about disorders with which patients commonly consult KM doctors.

  • "Treatise on cold damage and miscellaneous disease" is a ancient formula records on keeping in good health, provided "Internal classic" is a ancient codes on keep in good health. It can be inferred that Zhang Zhongjing was a first inheritor of academic ideology from "formula followed by establishment of the therapeutic principles". Before writing and compiling the "Treatise on cold damage and miscellaneous disease", Zhang zhongjing got the essence of "Internal classic" after composing and utilizing "Plain Questions", "Miraculous pivot and classic of difficult issues", so all the theory foundations of "Treatise on cold damage and miscellaneous disease" came from "Internal classic". The keynote of internal classic lies in obeying the Yin and Yang in natural world and preserving and maintaining the yang-qi of human body to attain the longest life-span. Zhang assimilated the essence of "Internal classic" and then generated a new ideological system - "Treatise on cold damage and miscellaneous disease" when studying it. This article is to expound ideology inheritance of keeping in good health by protecting Yang in "Internal classic" from analyzing the usage of Guizhi in "treatise on cold damage diseases".

  • Although there have been many endeavors aimed at the standardization and globalization of Korean medicine over a long period of time, the access to information on Oriental medical classics has been relatively poor due to the lack of appropriate translation methodology and standard terminology. In order to overcome existing barriers, continuous effort towards precise translation adopting a standard terminology should be maintained. As a part of this procedure, we planned to publish a part of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" in three sections, and the first two studies have already been published. Based on the methodology and approaches of previous studies, this third study aims to translate parts of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" into English, beginning with "The Sixteenth Question", and adopting "WHO-IST" terminology. The outcomes of this study are presented as follows: First, based on the result of existing translation studies and the outcome of "WHO-IST", English translation of "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" from "the Sixteenth Question" to "The Twenty-second Question" is offered, hoping to set a model of translation study which can be communicated universally. Second, in order to pave the way for future success in establishing translation studies, it is natural to verify the effectiveness and practicality of standard terminologies including the outcome of "WHO-IST". Continuous translation studies will be required in order to obtain constant feedback and adopt more suitable guidelines during the standardization process. Taking this into consideration, further translation studies of Oriental medical classics including "Classic of difficult issues(難經)" should be continued.

  • Objectives : In this paper, we investigated the applicability of text mining to Korean Medical Classics and suggest that researchers of Medical Classics utilize this methodology. Methods : We applied text mining to the Huangdi's internal classic, a seminal text of Korean Medicine, and visualized networks which represent connectivity of terms and documents based on vector similarity. Then we compared this outcome to the prior knowledge generated through conventional qualitative analysis and examined whether our methodology could accurately reflect the keyword of documents, clusters of terms, and relationships between documents. Results : In the term network, we confirmed that Qi played a key role in the term network and that the theory development based on relativity between Yin and Yang was reflected. In the document network, Suwen and Lingshu are quite distinct from each other due to their differences in description form and topic. Also, Suwen showed high similarity between adjacent chapters. Conclusions : This study revealed that text mining method could yield a significant discovery which corresponds to prior knowledge about Huangdi's internal classic. Text mining can be used in a variety of research fields covering medical classics, literatures, and medical records. In addition, visualization tools can also be utilized for educational purposes.

  • Pompe disease (glycogen storage disease type II) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by deficiency of acid-${\alpha}$-glucosidase (GAA) resulting in lysosomal glycogen accumulation in multiple tissue, particularly cardiac and skeletal muscle. The classic infantile form of Pompe disease is characterized by marked cardiomegaly, respiratory failure and severe generalized hypotonia. Most patients die from cardiorespiratory failure or respiratory infection within the first year or two of life without treatment. A "non-classic" phenotype presents with less severe clinical feature and slow progression of disease. We report two patients with non-classic infantile Pompe disease from one family manifested hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and progressive proximal weakness.

  • Purpose: Classic angiomyolipoma (AML) is common benign kidney tumor. However, some studies have claimed that epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) has malignant potential. We compared the patient characteristics and prognosis of EAML and classic AML to demonstrate predicting factors and poorer prognosis of EAML. Materials and Methods: The medical records of 231 patients who were diagnosed with EAML (n=27, 11.7%) or classic AML (n=204, 88.3%), were reviewed. All patients underwent computed tomography (CT) scans before operation or needle biopsy. We assessed the age, sex, tumor size, body mass index, comorbidities, and Hounsfield unit (HU) according to each CT phase. We defined the unfavorable group as patients with recurrence, metastasis and death due to tumor progression. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict EAML. Results: EAML patients were younger (41.2 years vs. 49.1 years, p=0.001), predominantly male (55.6% vs. 28.4%, p=0.005), and had a larger tumor (7.5 cm vs. 4.2 cm, p<0.001). The median pre-contrast HU was not significantly different between EAML and classic AML ($29.9{\pm}23.7$ vs. $14.7{\pm}41.0$, p=0.071). In multivariable analysis, younger age (odds ratio [OR], 0.96; p=0.032), male sex (OR, 3.33; p=0.013), and tumor larger than 4 cm (OR, 3.8; p=0.009) were significant predictive factors. Five patients (18.5%) had unfavorable outcomes, two patients had lymph node metastasis, and three patients had lung metastasis. Conclusions: Patient and tumor characteristics can be helpful in determining the type of AML preoperatively. Younger age, male sex, and larger tumor mass may increase the possibility of diagnosing EAML. EAML has malignant potential and requires careful follow-up.
