Development of Rotary Transfer Forming Device for Process Reduction in Forming (프레스 공정 단축을 위한 회전식 트랜스퍼 성형장치 개발)

  • Although the transfer forming process has various advantages, it is also inefficient for the use of multiple press machines, especially for small part sizes. In this study, a new forming process was proposed to use multiple tandem dies in a single press machine. A rotary transfer forming device was developed to combine the advantages of the progressive and transfer forming process. In this study, a detailed forming process using this device was analyzed, and the device was designed to perform four series of tandem forming processes in a single press. In order to analyze the feasibility of this forming process, simple forming dies were made. As a result, the position accuracy was 4 arcsec, and the forming speed reached up to 20 strokes per minute. It is thought that this rotary transfer forming device can help to save initial setup costs through the more efficient use of space in a press machine.

  • The use of waste rubber in concrete can reduce natural aggregate consumption and improve some technical properties of concrete. Although there are several equations for estimating the mechanical properties of concrete containing waste rubber, limited numbers of machine learning-based models have been proposed to predict the mechanical properties of rubbercrete. In this study, an extensive database of the mechanical properties of rubbercrete was gathered from a comprehensive survey of the literature. To model the mechanical properties of rubbercrete, M5P tree and linear gene expression programming (LGEP) methods as two machine learning techniques were employed to achieve reliable mathematical equations. Two procedures of input variable selection were considered in this study. The crucial component ratios of rubbercrete and concrete age were assumed as the input variables in the first procedure. In contrast, the volumes of the coarse and fine waste rubber and the compressive strength of concrete without waste rubber were considered the second procedure of the input variables. The results show that the models obtained by LGEP are more accurate than those achieved by the M5P model tree and existing traditional equations. Besides, the volumes of the coarse and fine waste rubber and the compressive strength of concrete without waste rubber are better predictors of the mechanical properties of rubbercrete compared to the first procedure of input variable selection.

  • A press shoe is an element of a machine for squeezing water from wood pulp in the field of manufacturing paper. This is used to compress the pulp enveloped by felt sheet with a large roller. The squeezing force is made by hydraulic pressure. The press shoe has a mechanism similar to a partial hydrostatic bearing. The pressure profile between press shoe and roller affects their squeezing ability, and partial peak pressure can tear the wet pulp. The curvature of the surface of press shoe varies to reduce the peak pressure and increase the mean pressure simultaneously. Therefore, the prediction of pressure distribution considering partially changed curvature of hydrostatic bearing is very important for designing the press shoe. In this study, the difference formulation of Reynolds' equation for partial hydrostatic bearing is by direct numerical method and a computer program to calculate the pressure distribution is developed. We investigate the effect of partially changed curvature of bearing surface on the pressure distribution. Other design parameter for hydrostatic bearing such as depth of pocket and relative velocity are also studied.

  • The vibration characteristics of a hammer press are important parameters for machine design and production control. In this study, a counterblow hammer press was mathematically modelled as a mass-spring-damper system in order to analyze its vibration characteristics. The forging efficiency was theoretically derived as a function of the mass ratio, momentum ratio, and the coefficient of restitution And the effects of the mass ratio, momentum ratio and the restitution coefficient on the forging efficiency were also investigated for two particular cases of the unit mass ratio and unit momentum ratio. Additionally, the vibration responses of the counterblow hammer press due to the ram colliding impact were analyzed, and the force transmitted to the foundation through the mounting unit was determined.

  • The piercing and blanking of thin sheet metal working is specified division in press die design and making. In order to prevent the defects, the optimum design of the production part, strip process layout, die design, die making and try out etc. are necessary the analysis of effective factors. For example, theory and practice of metal shearing process and it's phenomena, die structure, machine tool working for die making, die materials and it's heat treatment, metal working in field, their know how etc. are included in those factors. In this study, we analyzed whole of data base, theoretical back ground of metal working process, and then performed the progressive die tryout with the screw press.

  • This paper is concerned with manufacturing technology of thin foil tensile specimen using CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) and measurement of precision mechanical property. This thin foil tensile specimen manufacturing technology is a method that can make a metal thin foil specimen for micro tensile testing. We can get a burr free micro metallic thin foil specimen using this technology. For testing mechanical property of this micro thin foil, we use a nano scale material testing machine that was developed by KITECH. In this paper, micro tensile specimens of nickel and copper thin foil are fabricated with CIP and precision mechanical properties of these materials could be measured. We will expect that precision mechanical property of micro/nano material and component. Micro and Nano mechanical property can be measured using this technology and mechanical property data base of micro/nano material and component can be constructed.

A Study on Polycarbonate Microfabrication Using a Pneumatic Hot Press (공압 핫프레스를 이용한 마이크로 폴리카보네이트 성형에 관한 연구)

  • Thermoplastic microfluidic devices are used in BioMEMS for medical and biotechnology applications, such as gene extraction, DNA analysis, and virus detection. In this research, a simple fabrication protocol with a commercially available pneumatic hot press is proposed and demonstrated for polycarbonate microfluidic devices. Microfluidic channels with a width of 200 ㎛ and a height of 10 ㎛ were designed and machined onto a brass plate as a mold insert using a CNC milling machine. The resulting microfluidic channels on the mold insert were assessed and found to have an actual width of 198 ㎛ and a height of 10 ± 0.25 ㎛. The microfluidic channels were replicated on a polycarbonate sheet using the proposed replication technique at 146℃ for 20 minutes under a constant load of 2400 kgf. The devices were then naturally cooled to 100℃ while maintaining the same pressure. It was found that the microchannels were successfully replicated in the polycarbonate, with a width of 198 ㎛ and a height of 10.07 ㎛. The proposed replication technique thus offers the rapid mass production of high-quality microfluidic devices at a low cost with a process that, unlike conventional photolithography systems, does not require expensive equipment.

  • This paper presents the design and project of an innovative concept for a Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) Machine. Nowadays, equipment currently available for conducting SPIF result mostly from the adaptation of conventional CNC machine tools that results in a limited range of applications in terms of materials and geometries. There is also a limited market supply of equipment dedicated to Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF), that are costly considering low batches, making it unattractive for industry. Other factors impairing a quicker spread of SPIF are large forming times and poor geometrical accuracy of parts. The following sections will depict the development of a new equipment, designed to overcome some of the limitations of machines currently used, allowing the development of a sounding basis for further studies on the particular features of this process. The equipment here described possesses six-degrees-of freedom for the tool, for the sake of improved flexibility in terms of achievable tool-paths and an extra stiffness provided by a parallel kinematics scheme. A brief state of the art about the existing SPIF machines is provided to support the project's guidelines.
