Cold forging, carried out at room temperature, leads to high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface integrity as compared to other forging methods such as warm and hot forgings. In the cold forging process, WC-Co (Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt) alloy is the mainly used material as a core dies because of its superior hardness and strength as compared to other structural materials. For cold forging, die life is the most significant factor because it is directly related to the manufacturing cost due to periodic die replacement in mass production. To investigate die life of WC-Co alloy for cold forging, mechanical properties such as strength and fatigue are essentially necessary. Generally, uniaxial tensile test and fatigue test are the most efficient and simplest testing method. However, uniaxial tension is not efficiently application to WC-Co alloy because of its sensitivity to alignment of the specimen due to its brittleness and difficulty in thread machining. In this study, shape of specimen, tools, and testing methods, which are appropriate for uniaxial tensile test for WC-Co alloy, are proposed. The test results such as Young's modulus, tensile strength and stress-strain curves are compared to those in previous literature to validate the proposed testing methods. Based on the validation of test results it was concluded that the newly developed testing method is applicable to other cemented carbides like Titanium carbides with high strength and brittleness, and also can be utilized to carry out fatigue tests for further investigation on die life of cold forging.
In this study, the vibration test method to nondestructively evaluate the possibility of vehicle BSR (Buzz, Squeak, Rattle) noise generation in spot-welded structures was proposed. The weld quality was predicted by analyzing the local vibration transmission characteristics for the beam-shaped structure attached to testing spots. The bending stiffness was evaluated from the identified vibration properties. From the change in the stiffness, the weld quality was evaluated. For verification of the proposed method, the welded specimens were fabricated with partial changes in welding parameters. The local vibration transfers were measured. The frequency bands affected by the weld quality was identified. The capability of evaluating the welding parameters including defect position and quality variations was investigated. The proposed method enables fast quality evaluation to minimize the possibility of BSR noise generation in the manufactured vehicle.

Cladding material, which can selectively obtain excellent properties of different metals, is a composite material that combines two or more types of dissimilar metals into one plate. The titanium-copper cladding material between titanium which has excellent corrosion resistance and copper which has high thermal and electrical conductivity, are highly valuable composite materials. It can be used as heat exchangers with high conductivity under severe corrosion conditions. In order to apply the clad plate to the heat exchanger, it must be manufactured in the form of a tube and additional welding is required. It is important to select the cladding material manufacturing process and the welding process. The process of manufacturing the cladding material includes extrusion, rolling, and explosive bonding. Among them, the explosive bonding process is suitable for additional welding because no heat-affected zone is formed. In this study TIG welding of the explosive-bonded dissimilar clad plates was successfully performed by butt welding. The microstructures and bonding interface of the welded part were observed, and the effect of the bonding layer at the welding interface and the intermetallic compounds on the mechanical properties and tensile plastic deformation behaviors were analyzed. And also the integrity of TIG-welded dissimilar part was evaluated.
Inner shell material of LNG storage tanks that store ultra-low temperature LNG at -162℃ requires structural integrity assessment of a crack-like defect. From the viewpoint of conventional fracture mechanics, the assessment has mainly performed by single parameter using stress intensity factor K, J-integral and CTOD. However, the stresses in a material of crack tip are not unique caused by constraint loss due to size and geometry of the structure. Various attempts have been made to complement a single parameter fracture mechanics, typically with Q-stress. In this paper, we have performed a two-parameter approach by deriving the Q-stress coupling with J-integral suitable for the evaluation of the crack tip stress field in the non-linear elastic region. A quantitative evaluation of the constraint effect has performed by using the J-Q approach. It was evaluated that the SENB type specimen had a crack ratio of 0.1 to 0.7 and the wide type specimen had a crack ratio of 0.2 to 0.6.
Inevitable response loss under complex operational conditions significantly affects the integrity and quality of measured data, leading the structural health monitoring (SHM) ineffective. To remedy the impact of data loss, a common way is to transfer the recorded response of available measure point to where the data loss occurred by establishing the response mapping from measured data. However, the current research has yet addressed the structural condition changes afterward and response mapping learning from a small sample. So, this paper proposes a novel data driven structural response reconstruction method based on a sophisticated designed generating adversarial network (UAGAN). Advanced deep learning techniques including U-shaped dense blocks, self-attention and a customized loss function are specialized and embedded in UAGAN to improve the universal and representative features extraction and generalized responses mapping establishment. In numerical validation, UAGAN efficiently and accurately captures the distinguished features of structural response from only 40 training samples of the intact structure. Besides, the established response mapping is universal, which effectively reconstructs responses of the structure suffered up to 10% random stiffness reduction or structural damage. In the experimental validation, UAGAN is trained with ambient response and applied to reconstruct response measured under earthquake. The reconstruction losses of response in the time and frequency domains reached 16% and 17%, that is better than the previous research, demonstrating the leading performance of the sophisticated designed network. In addition, the identified modal parameters from reconstructed and the corresponding true responses are highly consistent indicates that the proposed UAGAN is very potential to be applied to practical civil engineering.
Guaranteeing the quality and integrity of structural health monitoring (SHM) data is very important for an effective assessment of structural condition. However, sensory system may malfunction due to sensor fault or harsh operational environment, resulting in multiple types of data anomaly existing in the measured data. Efficiently and automatically identifying anomalies from the vast amounts of measured data is significant for assessing the structural conditions and early warning for structural failure in SHM. The major challenges of current automated data anomaly detection methods are the imbalance of dataset categories. In terms of the feature of actual anomalous data, this paper proposes a data anomaly detection method based on data-level and deep learning technique for SHM of civil engineering structures. The proposed method consists of a data balancing phase to prepare a comprehensive training dataset based on data-level technique, and an anomaly detection phase based on a sophisticatedly designed network. The advanced densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) and Transformer encoder are embedded in the specific network to facilitate extraction of both detail and global features of response data, and to establish the mapping between the highest level of abstractive features and data anomaly class. Numerical studies on a steel frame model are conducted to evaluate the performance and noise immunity of using the proposed network for data anomaly detection. The applicability of the proposed method for data anomaly classification is validated with the measured data of a practical supertall structure. The proposed method presents a remarkable performance on data anomaly detection, which reaches a 95.7% overall accuracy with practical engineering structural monitoring data, which demonstrates the effectiveness of data balancing and the robust classification capability of the proposed network.

In this paper, the applicability of cement grout bas been studied as an alternative to bentontite grout to backfill ground heat exchangers. To provide an optimal mixture design, the groutabilty and thermal conductivity of cement grouts with various mixture ratios were experimentally evaluated and compared. The unconfined compression strength of cement grout specimen was measured, which was exposed to cyclic temperature variation ranging from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-5^{\circ}C$. In addition, the integrity of the interface between circulating HDPE pipes and cement grout was evaluated by performing equivalent hydraulic conductivity tests, on the specimen. in which a pipe locates at the center of the specimen.
Galileo is a European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) that has offered the Galileo Open Service since 2016. Consequently, the standardization of GNSS augmentation systems, such as Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS), Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS), and Aircraft Based Augmentation System (ABAS) for Galileo signals, is ongoing. In 2023, the European Union Space Programme Agency (EUSPA) released prior probabilities of a satellite fault and a constellation fault for Galileo, which are 3×10-5 and 2×10-4 per hour, respectively. In particular, the prior probability of a Galileo constellation fault is significantly higher than that for the GPS constellation fault, which is defined as 1×10-8 per hour. This raised concerns about its potential impact on GBAS integrity monitoring. According to the Global Positioning System (GPS) Standard Positioning Service Performance Standard (SPS PS), a constellation fault is classified as a wide fault. A wide fault refers to a fault that affects more than two satellites due to a common cause. Such a fault can be caused by a failure in the Earth Orientation Parameter (EOP). The EOP is used when transforming the inertial axis, on which the orbit determination is based, to Earth Centered Earth Fixed (ECEF) axis, accounting for the irregularities in the rotation of the Earth. Therefore, a faulty EOP can introduce errors when computing a satellite position with respect to the ECEF axis. In GNSS, the ephemeris parameters are estimated based on the positions of satellites and are transmitted to navigation satellites. Subsequently, these ephemeris parameters are broadcasted via the navigation message to users. Therefore, a faulty EOP results in erroneous broadcast ephemeris data. In this paper, we assess the conventional ephemeris fault detection monitor currently employed in GBAS for wide faults, as current GBAS considers only single failure cases. In addition to the existing requirements defined in the standards on the Probability of Missed Detection (PMD), we derive a new PMD requirement tailored for a wide fault. The compliance of the current ephemeris monitor to the derived requirement is evaluated through a simulation. Our findings confirm that the conventional monitor meets the requirement even for wide fault scenarios.
In this study, we developed a semi-analytical approach for the numerical analysis of residual stress in oxide scales formed on hot-rolled steels. The oxide scale, formed during the hot rolling process, experiences complex interactions due to thermal and mechanical influences, significantly affecting the material's integrity and performance. Our research focuses on integrating various stress components such as thermal stress, growth stress, and creep behavior to predict the residual stress within the oxide layer. The semi-analytical method combines analytical expressions for each stress component with numerical integration to account for their cumulative effects. Validation through instrumented indentation tests confirms the reliability of our model, which considers thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) differences, scale growth, and creep-induced stress relaxation. Our findings indicate that thermal stress resulting from CTE differences significantly impacts the overall residual stress, with growth stress contributing a compressive component during cooling, and creep behavior playing a minor role in stress relaxation. This comprehensive approach enhances the accuracy of residual stress prediction, facilitating the optimization of material design and processing conditions for hot-rolled steel products.

Wall thinning defects can occur in the pressure vessels used in a variety of industries. Such defects are related to the flow velocity. Considering the fact that such vessels constitute up to 70 or 80% of the plant structures in a power plant, it is important to measure internal defects as part of a safety evaluation. In this study, optical measurement were applied in a non-destructive evaluation using shearography to ensure the safety and improve the reliability of a power plant through the non-contact, non-destructive evaluation of pressure vessels. In order to verify whether the pressure vessels contained faults, experimental and analytical investigation were conducted to measure any internal defects and out-of-plane deformation from inner temperature changes and pressure changes in the piping of the circulation system. The most important factors in this research were the thickness, width, and length of a defect. An increase in these could confirm an increase in the deformation. Thus, internal defects in a pressure vessel were measured using shearography, which made it possible to ensure the reliability and integrity of the pipe.
