A coupled thermomechanical analysis of composite structures in pyrolysis and ablation environments is performed. The pyrolysis and ablation models include the effects of mass loss, pore gas diffusion, endothermic reaction energy, surface recession, etc. The thermal and structural analysis interface is based upon a staggered coupling algorithm by using a commercial finite element code. The characteristics of the proposed method are investigated through numerical experiments with carbon/phenolic composites. The numerical studies are carried out to examine the surface recession rate by chemical and mechanical ablation. In addition, the effects of shrinkage or intumescence during the pyrolysis process are shown.

Femto-second laser ablation with the various feed velocities of the Invar alloy and the micro surface milling for the processing condition were studied. We used a regenerative amplified Ti:sapphire laser with a 1kHz repetition rate, 184fs pulse duration time and 785nm wavelength. Femto-second laser pulse was irradiated on the Invar alloy with the air blowing at the condition of various laser peak powers and feed velocities. An ablation characteristic according to feed velocity of the Invar alloy was appeared as the non-linear type at different zone of energy fluence. The micro surface milling of the Invar alloy using a mapping method was investigated. The optimal condition of micro surface milling was laser peak power of 22.8mW, feed velocity of 1 mm/s, beam gap of $1{\mu}m$. With the optimal processing condition, the fine rectangular shape without burr and thermal damage was achieved. Using the femto-second laser system, it demonstrates excellent tool for micro surface milling of the Invar alloy without heat effects and poor edge.
High-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied utilizing numerical and experimental methods with emphasis on recondensation ratio, and the dynamics of the laser induced vapor flow. In the numerical calculation, the temperature pressure, density and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are first obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method, and then the plume dynamics is calculated by using a commercial CFD package. To confirm the computation results, the probe beam deflection technique was utilized for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave. Discontinuities of properties and velocity over the Knudsen layer were investigated. Related with the analysis of the jump condition, the effect of the recondesation ratio on the plume dynamics was examined by comparing the pressure, density, and mass fraction of ablated aluminum vapor. To consider the effect of mass transfer between the ablation plume and air, unlike the most previous investigations, the equation of species conservation is simultaneously solved with the Euler equations. Therefore the numerical model computes not only the propagation of the shock front but also the distribution of the aluminum vapor. To our knowledge, this is the first work that employed a commercial CFD code in the calculation of pulsed ablation phenomena.

Ablation occurs at irradiance beyond $10^9\;W/cm^2$ with nanosecond and short laser pulses focused onto any materials. Phenomenologically, the surface temperature is instantaneously heated past its vaporization temperature. Before the surface layer is able to vaporize, underlying material will reach its vaporization temperature. Temperature and pressure of the underlying material are raised beyond their critical values, causing the surface to explode. The pressure over the irradiated surface from the recoil of vaporized material can be as high as $10^5\;MPa$. The interaction of high power nanosecond laser with a thin metal in air has been investigated. The nanosecond pulse laser beam in atmosphere generates intensive explosions of the materials. The explosive ejection of materials make the surrounding gas compressed, which form a shock wave that travels at several thousand meters per second. To understand the laser ablation mechanism including the heating and ionization of the metal after lasing, the temporal evolution of shock waves is captured on an ICCD camera through laser flash shadowgraphy. The expansion of shock wave in atmosphere was found to agree with the Sedov's self-similar spherical blast wave solution.

Impingement of a high power laser pulse (above 1 GW/$cm^2$) on a metal foil causes its ablation, which is characterized by a rapid expulsion of matter and the initiation of a strong shock wave inside the solid metal. The shock propagates through the foil and reverberates on the rear side, causing its deformation and microparticle ejection, which were deposited on the foil prior to ablation. Based on this principle, we are developing a new drug delivery system - Biolistic gun. Current study is focused on the controllability, stability, efficiency of the system, and characterization of the penetration shapes in various conditions. We have tested the system by applying direct and confined ablation. Several different media combinations were used for confinement-BK7 glass, water, BK7 glass with water, and succulent jelly(ultrasono jelly, RHAPAPHRM). Biological tissue was replicated by a 3% gelatin solution. Present data shows that the confinement results in enhancement of penetration shape reached by 5 um cobalt microparticles. Based on the analysis of the experimental results we observe that the penetration shape of microparticles can be controlled by adjusting the thickness of confinement media.

The CSCM Upwind method and Material Transport Analysis (MTA) have been used to predict the thermal response and ablation rate for non-charring material to be used as thermal protection material (TPM) in KSR-III test rocket nozzle. The thermal boundary conditions such as cold wall heat-transfer rate and recovery enthalpy for MTA code are obtained from the upwind Navier-Stokes solution procedure. The heat transfer rate and temperature variations at rocket nozzle wall were studied with shape change of the nozzle surface as time goes by. The surface recession was severely occurred at nozzle throat and this affected nozzle performance such as thrust coefficient substantially.

PC-TEMs (Polycarbonate Track-Etched membranes) were micro-drilled for biomedical applications by ultrafast pulsed laser. The ablation and damage characteristics were studied on PE-TEMs by assuming porous thin membranes. The experiments were conducted in the range of 2.02 $J/cm^2$ and 8.07$J/cm^2$. The ablation threshold and damage threshold were found to be 2.56$J/cm^2$ and 1.14$J/cm^2$, respectively. While a conical shaped drilled holes was made in lower fluence region, straight shaped holes were drilled in higher fluence region. Nanoholes made the membrane as porous material and ablation characteristics for both bulk and thin film membranes were compared.

It is well known that there are three mechanisms in the nozzle surface regression, namely ablation, mechanical erosion and chemical corrosion. There are Analogies among these three mechanisms. In order to compare the order of the magnitude of these mechanism, the analogy was adapted and the Mach number of the gas flow was expressed by the nozzle shape(location).

A development of one-dimensional thermal analysis tool is performed to estimate the thickness of cork insulation for flight vehicle. In the calculation of cork temperature, the cork density model, heat of ablation and pyrolysis gas enthalpy model were applied. The calculation for the two-layer model of cork and metal was performed by the tool and compared with the experimental data. The results for the two aerodynamic heating conditions were 17 % and -12 % different from the experimental data, respectively. The effect of mechanical ablation not included in the calculation can be expected as the cause of the difference. The temperature-density curve of cork which adjusted by experimental data was also presented.
