  • Recently, the design and construction of massive concrete structures are increased. But, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass make the construction of massive concrete structures be very difficult. Therefore, in Seohae Grand Bridge Project, the field measurement of hydration heat for the massive concrete footings(11$\times$22$\times$4m) was carried out. It was shown to be possible to construct the massive concrete footing successfully by application of pipe cooling system. And the measurement results showed that standard code for concrete practice was very conservative.

  • Various commercial shampoos were frequently prescribed for dermatologic therapy in small animal practice. Skim hydration affected by the shampoos, however, was not evaluated routinely. In order to evaluate the skin hydration for the exact prescription of shampoos method to measure skin hydration of shampoos are needed. This study was undertaken to evaluate the skin hydration effect of shampoo on canine skin using Corneometer. Five healthy dogs were applied with 7 commercial shampoos: Humilac, Sebocalm, Sebolytics, Etiderm, Benzoyl peroxide, HyLyt and Zn-7 Derm. Skin hydrations were evaluated by measurement of electrical capacitance by Corneometer. A statistically significant increase in skim hydration was found 17(p<0.05) and 77 minutes(p<0.01) after application of Humilac indicating a humidifying effect of this product. A statistically significant decrease in skin hydration was found for the Benzoyl peroxide after 77 minutes(p<0.05). No statistically significant differences between the other shampoos were found. None of the products tested had any negative effect on the skin barrier function. The Corneometer was found useful for detecting skin hydration to shampoos and considered as a simple and useful tool for prescription of various shampoos routine practice.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of facial skin parameters (hydration, lipid and pH) on forehead and cheek according to Ayurvedic constitution classification of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The condition of hydration, lipid and pH in the facial skin was measured using non-invasive diagnostic technique. The collected data was analyzed with the SPSS 16.0 windows statistical program. Design: Eighty-nine Korean female subjects were recruited for this study and the average age of them was $19.9{\pm}0.84$ years. Three groups by the Ayurvedic constitution were classified by questionnaire. Results: There was a significant difference in hydration, lipid and pH according to Ayurvedic constitution. The measurement of hydration on the face depending on the constitution were shown in the order of Pitta, Kapha and Vata (p<0.001). The measurement of lipid on the face depending on the constitution were shown in the order of Kapha, Pitta and Vata (p<0.001, p<0.01). The measurement of pH on the face depending on the constitution were shown in the order of Kapha, Pitta and Vata (p<0.01). Conclusion: Facial skin surface seemed to be dependent on Ayurvedic constitution classification in Korean. These findings indicated that Ayurvedic constitution classification might be a useful esthetic treatment for caring facial skin in the future.

  • Abutments in Kumdang bridge are massive concrete structures of which total height is l0m, length is 30m, and width is 7m. Therefore, there is every probability that early age thermal cracking such as hydration heat occur. We measure heat of hydration, strains of rebar, and stresses of concrete abutment during construction. Using analysis of measuring data, we examine thermal stresses, and make use of results as method which control thermal cracking. Finally, we develope thermal stress analysis program which have pre/post processor to be easy of accessing and the usefulness of that is estimated through comparison of results.

  • The hydration reaction of the slag-gypsum system was studied by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, optical icroscopic observation, and measurement of heat liberation of hydration. 1. Domestic granulated slag was almost noncrystalized state, and its mineral compositions calculated were 46.53% of gehlenite, 28.14% of akermanite, and 19.04% of wollastonite. 2. The slag quenched with water at relatively high temperature had better reactivity. 3. The production of ettringite, CSH gel and AH3 gel were stimulated by effect of $Ca(OH)_2$, $Mg(OH)_2$ and calcined dolomite as activators, and the strength of hardened body would be developed by forming compacted microstructure.

  • Recently, there are many fields have been required for the precision measurements, as an advanced example of which, a precise change of inner structure during the hydration process of mortar was observed by ultrasonic and dielectric measurements. The results show that it is possible to determine the safety of mortar and mixing ratio, and strength growth and shrinkage rate by heat evolution.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the reaction of hydration of paper sludge during the setting of portland cement in a paper sludge, wood-cement-water mixturte. The percentage of paper sludge per cement is 7.5%, 15%, 30% respectively. The result indicated that the sludge of 7.5% had the most effect on reaction of hydration, and the sludge of 15% had moderately inhibitory effect but there is still possibility to make sludge-cement board. Paper sludge of 30%, Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc and Populus euramericana Guinier were proved to have the worst inhibitory effect on cement hydration, so pretreatment will be needed before making board with paper sludge-cement mixture.

  • In this study, the compressive strength and hydration heat of cement paste mixed with cellulose nanocrystal(CNC) and graphene oxide (GO) were evaluated. The difference was compared by mixing 0.1 vol.% ~0.4 vol.% of CNC and 0.05 wt.% ~ 0.1 wt.% of GO in a cement paste with a water cement ratio of 0.3. As a result, it was confirmed that the compressive strength increased as CNC and GO were mixed respectively, and then the compressive strength decreased when the appropriate mixing rate was exceeded. In the hydration heat measurement, there was no significant difference when only CNC was mixed, but it was confirmed that the hydration heat decreased as the amount of CNC mixing increased when used in combination with GO.

  • The measurement of hydration level in the surface layer of the skin, stratum corneum (SC), gives important information on the biophysical properties and function of the skin barrier such as softness, flexibility, and healthiness of the skin. But it is difficult to measure a consistent hydration level from a sample to another sample due to individual variations and environmental changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate objective hydration after using various products in the SC. The SC Hydration was measured by capacitance (Corneometer$^{(R)}$, C+K, Germany) on the ventral site of forearm from 40 healthy volunteers. The skin surface was chronologically measured immediately after application of the test products and 3 and 6 hours later. We analyzed the averages of five measurements of each site and used the hydration increase rate for correction on untreated site variation. We found that most polyols including glycerol and butylenes glycol influenced directly the hydration increase rate in the SC previously. In this study, glycerol was used to prepare the standard products from 0 to 20 percents and applied to the same volunteers. The individual standard curve showed linear relation to glycerol concentrations. Based on the the standard curve, hydration of SC was converted into hydration increase rate to glycerol concentrations. The converted glycerol concentrations of products were repetitive and reproducible. In addition, the individual standard curve was used to relate the skin type of each individual. These results suggest that the hydration of the SC standardized regardless of external variation and individual skin condition can explain detailed skin state variation. Further studies will be conducted with other ingredients such as surfactants, lipids and aqueous materials, and with other methods for noninvasive measurement.
