  • Effects of two-step aging treatment on the stress corrosion cracking(SCC) resistance of 7050 Al alloy were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electrical conductivity measurement and stress corrosion facter(SCF) evaluation. It was found that η', principal hardening phase, transformed to η during over aging above maximum hardness, and SCC resistance was improved by increasing of the size and interspacing of η particles in matrix and grain boundary. The electrical conductivity increased with aging time, but SCF decreased due to the decrease of yield strength. This results mean increase of SCC resistance The optimum two-step aging condition in forged 7050 Al alloy was to be first aged at $120^{\circ}C$ for 6h and then finally aged at $175^{\circ}C$ for 12h.

  • Dominant species of macrobenthos were analyzed based on differentiation of three distinct methods: the density based method, the biomass based method and LeBris method, by considering the frequency of occurrence using quantitative data collected over 5 years (1993-1998) at 21 stations in Chonsu Bay. Sedimentary environments as well as species composition and diversity showed the spatial and temporal distribution patterns. The ranks of dominant species as determined by the density based method were more similar to the results by the LeBris method than to those from the biomass based method. Considering the temporal variation, LeBris method were more efficient than any other methods for the determination of dominant species in Chonsu Bay. Lumbrineris longifolia, Theora fragilis, and Moerella jedoensis were recognized by all three methods. A one-way analysis of variance indicated spatial distributions patterns among most of the dominant species. These species showed positive correlations to sedimentary parameters such as mean grain size. However, T. fragilis and Paraprinospio pinnata showed the temporal patterns in their distribution, and were also correlated to the benthic environment, organic content and dissolved oxygen. Some dominant species, e.g., T. fragilis, S. scutata, G. gurjanovae proved to be useful benthic indicators based on the environmental variations determinated by long-term benthic ecological monitoring in Chonsu Bay.

  • We examined the effect of salt marsh vegetation on the benthic environment in macro-tidal flats at Donggeomdo, Ganghwa, on the west coast of Korea. Nine stations were established along a transect across the tidal flats, including salt marsh, and field sampling was conducted monthly from July 1997 to June 1998. During the study period, environmental parameters fluctuated as follows: salinity, 15.0 to 28.2 psu, exposure time, 613 to 702 hr/m, inundation time, 28 to 117 hr/m, sediment organic carbon, 0.71 to 1.34%, nitrogen, 0.07 to 0.16%, sulfur from 0.07 to 0.22%, mean grain size from 6.3 to $6.9{\phi}$, water content from 19.4 to 44.4%, water temperature from 4.4 to $20.4^{\circ}C$ and temperature of the surface sediments, 2.7 to $31.1^{\circ}C$, in total, seven halophyte species were sampled and found to be vertically distributed across the tidal levels. Carer scabrifolia, Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Phragmites communis dominated the upper zone of the salt marsh, Juncus haenkei, Triglochin maritimum and P. communis dominated the middle zone, and Suaeda japonica predominated in the lower area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling revealed that the zonation of halophytes was related to environmental variables such as salinity and exposure time. The halophyte communities were likely related to the organic content of the surface sediment.

  • Zonation pattern of macro-invertebrate community structure was examined from Okjukpo sandy beach, Taechongdo, Korea. Macrofauna were collected in June 1998 using a can corer from ten stations along one transect. Mean grain size ranged from 1.97 to 2.23${\phi}$ and sediment organic contents ranged from 0.52 to 1.02%. A total of benthic macro-invertebrates comprised 25 species, providing 10,705 individuals and 89.13 g wet weight in biomass. Peracaridean crustaceans such as amphipods and isopods are the most prominant components in this exposed sandy beach. The dominant species were Eohaustorius setulosus (33%), Excirolana chiltoni (26%), Haustorioides koreanus (12%), Platorchestia crassicornis (8%), and Cycladicama cumingii (6%). The zonation patterns by these animals were very similar to those noted by Dahl(1952) and Jo(1990). They are divided into three faunal zones: 1) subterrestrial fringe dominated by a talitrid amphipod Platorchestia crassicornis, 2) midlittoral zone by a cirolanid isopod Excirolana chiltoni, 3) sublittoral fringe by more diverse amphipods communities.

  • $TiO_2$ thin films for high energy density capacitors were prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Flexible PET (Polyethylene terephtalate) substrate was used to maintain the structure of the commercial film capacitors. The effects of deposition pressure on the crystallization and electrical properties of $TiO_2$ films were investigated. The crystal structure of $TiO_2$ films deposited on PET substrate at room temperature was unrelated to deposition pressure and showed an amorphous structure unlike that of films on Si substrate. The grain size and surface roughness of films decreased with increasing deposition pressure due to the difference of mean free path. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the formation of chemically stable $TiO_2$ films. The dielectric constant of $TiO_2$ films was significantly changed with deposition pressure. $TiO_2$ films deposited at low pressure showed high dissipation factor due to the surface microstructure. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor of films deposited at 70 mTorr were found to be 100~120 and 0.83 at 1 kHz, respectively. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of $TiO_2$ films showed the properties of class I ceramic capacitors. $TiO_2$ films deposited at 10~30 mTorr showed dielectric breakdown at applied voltage of 7 V. However, the films of 500~300 nm thickness deposited at 50 and 70 mTorr showed a leakage current of ${\sim}10^{-8}{\sim}10^{-9}$ A at 100 V.

  • Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the uniaxial tensile properties of nanocrystalline $U_{0.5}Th_{0.5}O_2$ solid solution with the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential. The results indicated that the elastic modulus increased linearly with the density relative to a single crystal, but decreased with increasing temperature. The simulated nanocrystalline $U_{0.5}Th_{0.5}O_2$ exhibited a breakdown in the Halle-Petch relation with mean grain size varying from 3.0 nm to 18.0 nm. Moreover, the elastic modulus of $U_{1-y}Th_yO_2$ solid solutions with different content of thorium at 300 K was also studied and the results accorded well with the experimental data available in the literature. In addition, the fracture mode of nanocrystalline $U_{0.5}Th_{0.5}O_2$ was inclined to be ductile because the fracture behavior was preceded by some moderate amount of plastic deformation, which is different from what has been seen earlier in simulations of pure $UO_2$.

  • Compressional wave velocity and shear wave velocity were measured for gassy sediments collected from Jinhae Bay, Korea. To distinguish inhomogeneities of gassy sediments, Computed Tomography (CT) was carried out for gassy sediment using CT Scanner. The cored sediments are composed of homogeneous and soft mud (greater than $8{\Phi}$ in mean grain size) containing clay content more than 50%. In depth interval of gassy sediments, compressional wave velocity is significantly decreased from 1480m/s to 1360m/s, indicating that the gas greatly affects compressional wave velocity due to a gas and/or degassing cracks. Shear wave velocity shows a slight increasing pattern from ${\sim}55\;m/s$ in the upper part of the core to ${\sim}58\;m/s$ at 320 cm depth, and then decreases to ${\sim}54\;m/s$ in the lower part of the core containing a small amount of gas. But shear wave velocity in the gassy sediments is slightly greater than that of non-gassy sediments in the upper part of the core. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio is decreased (from 30 to 25) in gas charged zone. The Vp/Vs ratio is well correlated with shear wave velocity, but no correlation with compressional wave velocity. This suggests that low concentrations of gas have little affects on shear wave velocity. By CT images, the gas in the sediments is mostly concentrated around inner edge of core liner due to a long duration after sediment collection.

  • The Gochanggun Kwangseungri macro-tide open-coast beach, located in the southwestern coast of Korea, was investigated in terms of the seasonal variations of surface sediment facies and sedimentary environment. Surface sediments of 45 sites in four seasons (May 2006 - February 2007) were sampled along three survey lines (15 sites in each survey line). The surface sediments of the Kwangseungri Beach are mainly composed of fine-grained sands, and its mean grain size is the coarsest in winter. Mud facies partly exists in summer, whereas it is nearly absent in winter. The spatial distribution of surface sediments shows a coast-parallel band of fine and medium sands during spring, fall, and winter. In the northern part, the study area is dominated by fine sands during summer, whereas by coarse sands during winter. These results can be interpreted that tide is more effective than wave on the surface sediment distribution of the Kwangseungri Beach during the summer season.

  • This study were observed to the conditions of organic pollution applying to tile environmental assessments based on macrobenthos around the raft culture ground which became an issue by organic matter input in Jinhae Bay. Three stations, mussel farm, oyster farm and the control station on which rarely culture activities were fixed and have analyzed to the sediment characteristics and macrobenthic communities. Muddy substrates between 6.0 and 6.60 on mean grain size have prevailed to the bottom layer in all stations. The highest organic matter content of 2.8% was observed to the mussel farm while the lowest one of 1.5% was recorded on the control area. As a total, 79 species from seven phyla were identified. Comparing to shell farms, the control station have composed to more diversified community structure. In the mussel and the oyster farm, opportunistic species, living in high organic contents area, Lumbrineris longifolia, Heteromastus. filiformis in polychaetes and Corophium sinense in amphipod were dominated. As results on environmental assessment, in spite of changing to the species composition and densities seasonally, the mussel farm have recorded only to moderately polluted condition.

  • Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) thin films were grown at low temperatures on glass substrates via 3-zone chemical vapor deposition. Lead iodide (PbI2) and lead bis (dipivaloylmethanate) [Pb(dpm)2] precursors were used as lead sources. Due to the high sublimation temperature (~400℃) of the PbI2 precursor, a low substrate temperature could not be constantly maintained. Therefore, MAPbI3 thin films degraded into the PbI2 phase. In contrast, for the Pb(dpm)2 precursor, a substrate temperature of ~120℃ was maintained because the sublimation temperature of Pb(dpm)2 is as low as 130℃ at a high vapor pressure. As a result, high-quality MAPbI3 thin films were successfully grown on glass substrates using Pb(dpm)2. The rms (root-mean-square) roughness of MAPbI3 thin films formed from Pb(dpm)2 was as low as ~19.2 nm, while it was ~22.7 nm for those formed using PbI2. The grain size of the films formed from Pb(dpm)2 was as large as approximately 350 nm.
