The convective heat transfer on the outer surface of tube arrays perpendicular to the flow direction was experimentally investigated. The test sections which include the aligned and staggered arrangements were made and the local heat transfer coefficients on the outer surface of the tube were measured after the flow has been fully developed. The results showed that the local heat transfer coefficients of the staggered arrangement, which has transverse pitch of 0.075 m and longitudinal pitch of 0.08 m, were about 15% greater than that of the aligned arrangement. Also, the overall mean Nusselt number of the former was greater than that of the latter. It is verified that the results obtained by using the simulation show the same tendency with those of experiment.

A k-$\varepsilon$ equation model was established to investigate the behaviours of two-dimensional surface buoyant jets. Its computational results were compared with experimental data on the mean flow and the turbulent transport. The model was proved to predict the flow characteristics reasonably. The influence of the values of k and $\varepsilon$ given in the inlet on the evaluation of surface buoyant jets was examined to determine them quantitatively. Computations for several values of buoyancy production coefficient $C\varepsilon$$_3$ in the $\varepsilon$ equation, which has been neglected by many researchers. were carried out to evaluate its effect on the flow development. Computational results of the two-dimensional surface buoyant jets were presented and briefly discussed.

In order to optimize the performance of a Wells turbine with fixed guide vanes, the designs of an end plate and a ring on the tip of the turbine rotor are proposed as penetrating blade tip treatments. In this study, numerical investigations are made using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based ANSYS Fluent software, and validated by corresponding experimental data. The flow fields are analyzed and non-dimensional coefficients $C_A$, $C_T$ and ${\eta}$ are calculated under steady-state conditions. Numerical results show that the stalling phenomenon on a ring-type Wells turbine occurs at a flow coefficient of ${\phi}=0.36$, and its peak efficiency can reach 0.54, which is 16% higher than that of an unmodified turbine and 9% higher than in the case of an endplate-type turbine. In addition, quasi-steady analysis is used to calculate the mean efficiency and output work of a wave cycle under sinusoidal flow conditions. As a result, it has been found that the ring-type turbine is superior to other types of Wells turbines.

Experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of pulsations on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of an axisymmetric impinging jet on a flat plate heated by using a gold coated aim. Vertex motion in the impinging jet is visualized using a fog generator, and a thermochromatic liquid crystal (TLC) technique is used to measure the time averaged local temperature distributions on the impingement plate. In addition, the quantitative data for mean velocity and turbulence intensity are obtained employing hot-wire anemometer. Parameters such as pulsating frequency (f = 0, 10 and 20 Hz) and the nozzle-to-palate spacing (H/D = 2, 10) are considered at the jet Reynolds number of 20,000. Consequently, the significant changes of flow structure and local Nusselt number distribution due to pulsations are observed. In the case of H/D = 2, the enhanced heat transfer coefficient exceeding 30 % is observed at the stagnation point. At the high H/D, heat transfer rate increases with pulsation frequency.
Non-gray radiation with convection in the entrance region of a smooth tube is numerically investigated. The fluid is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen to simulate combustion products of propane. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically and thermally developing. The P-1 approximation is used to simplify the radiative transfer equation and the exponential wide band model is adapted to model the spectral absorption coefficients of non-gray gas mixture. The bulk mean temperature and Nusselt number variation along the tube axis are shown for several inlet and wall temperature pairs to show the effect of temperature on the heat transfer characteristics. Nusselt numbers for simultaneously developing flow are compared to those for thermally developing flow. In addition, the effect of the mole fraction of the non-gray gases on convective and radiative Nusselt numbers is investigated.

Flow characteristics in transitional boundary layers on a flat plate were experimentally investigated under three different freestream conditions i. e. uniform flow with 0.1 % and 3.7% freestream turbulent intensity and cylinder-wake with 3.7% maximum turbulent intensity. Instantaneous streamwise velocities in laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layers were measured by I-type hot-wire probe. For estimation of wall shear stresses on the flat plate, measured mean velocities near the wall were applied to the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method (CPM). Distributions of skin friction coefficients were reasonably predicted in all developed boundary layers. Intermittency profiles, which were estimated using Conditional Sampling Technique in transitional boundary layers, were also consistent with previously published data. It was predicted that the incoming turbulent intensity had more influence on transition onset point and transition process than freestream turbulent intensity existed just over the transition region. It was also confirmed that non-turbulent and turbulent profiles in transitional boundary layers could not be simply treated as Blasius and fully turbulent profiles.

The whirl and generated forces of rotating cylinders with different diameters placed in still water and in flow are studied experimentally. For the rotating cylinders in still water, the Same Frequency Whirl (SFW) and Different Frequency Whirl (DFW) have been identified and illustrated. The corresponding SFW and DFW areas are divided. The Root Mean Square (RMS) values of the generated force coefficient dramatically increase in the defined ranges of Resonance I and Resonance II. For the rotating cylinders in flow, the hydrodynamics, SFW and DFW are illustrated. The hydrodynamic, SFW and DFW areas are divided. The RMS values of the generated forces in the range of Resonance II are much smaller than those in still water due to the generated lift forces. The discussion suggests that the frequency of the DFW may equal multiple times or one-multiple times that of the rotating frequency: the whirl direction of the DFW with multiple times the frequency of the rotating frequency is the same as the rotating direction. The whirl direction of the DFW with one-multiple times frequency of the rotating frequency is opposite to the rotating direction.

This study investigates the change of flow characteristics over 10 Asian river basins in the past 30 years (1976-2005). The variation is estimated from The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model outputs based on reanalysis data which was bias-corrected for Asian monsoon reagion. The model was firstly calibrated and validated using observed data for daily streamflow. Four statistical criteria were applied to evaluate the model performance, including Coefficient of determination (R2), Nash - Sutcliffe model efficiency coeffi cient (NSE), Root mean square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), and Percentage Bias (PBIAS). Then parameters of the model were applied for the historical period 1976-2005. The estimates show a temporal non-considerable increasing rate of daily streamflow in most of the basins over the past 30 years. The difference of monthly discharge becomes more significant during the months in the wet season (June to September) in all basins. The seasonal runoff shows significant difference in Summer and Autumn, when the rainfall intensity is higher. The line showing averaged runoff/rainfall ratio in all basins is sharp, presenting high variation of seasonal runoff/rainfall ratio from season to season.

The present study aims to investigate the interaction of a wire-type turbulence stimulator and the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate by flow field measurement. For the towing tank tests, a one-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) attached on a two-axis traverse was used to measure the streamwise velocity component of the boundary layer flow in zero pressure gradient, disturbed by a turbulence stimulator. The wire diameter was 0.5 and 1.0 mm according to the recommended procedures and guidelines suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference. Turbulence development by the stimulator was identified by the skin friction coefficient, mean and Root Mean Square (RMS) of the streamwise velocity. The laminar boundary layer with the absence of the wire-type stimulator was similar to the Blasius solution and previous experimental results. By the stimulator, the mean and RMS of the streamwise velocity were increased near the wall, showing typical features of the fully developed turbulent boundary layer. The critical Reynolds number was reduced from 2.7×105 to 1.0×105 by the disturbances caused by the wire. As the wire diameter and the roughness Reynolds number (Rek) increased, the disturbances by the stimulator increased RMS of the streamwise velocity than turbulent boundary layer.
Tall buildings are often subjected to steady and unsteady forces due to external wind flows. Measurement and mitigation of these forces becomes critical to structural design in engineering applications. Over the last few decades, many approaches such as modification of the external geometry of structures have been investigated to mitigate wind-induced load. One such proven geometric modification involved the rounding of sharp corners. In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of rounded corner radii on the reducing the flow-induced loading on a square cylinder. We perform 3-Dimensional (3D) simulations for high Reynolds number flows (Re=1 × 105) which are more likely to be encountered in practical applications. An Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method capable of capturing flow accurately at large Reynolds numbers is employed in this study. The IDDES formulation uses a k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for near-wall modelling that prevents mesh-induced separation of the boundary layer. The effects of these corner modifications are analyzed in terms of the resulting variations in the mean and fluctuating components of the aerodynamic forces compared to a square cylinder with no geometric changes. Plots of the angular distribution of the mean and fluctuating coefficient of pressure along the square cylinder's surface illustrate the effects of corner modifications on the different parts of the cylinder. The windward corner's separation angle was observed to decrease with an increase in radius, resulting in a narrower and longer recirculation region. Furthermore, with an increase in radius, a reduction in the fluctuating lift, mean drag, and fluctuating drag coefficients has been observed.
