In this paper, we introduce a new dimming control method in a visible light communication (VLC) system wherein byteinversion is adopted for flicker-free transmission. In the VLC transmitter, the original and the inverted data were sent sequentially and the remnant time in one period was used for the dimming control of the LED light. In the VLC receiver, only the original data was recovered using the gating signal whose width was the same as the length of the original data. In our experiments, the dimming control ranges were measured to be 22%-53%, 11%-76%, and 5%-88% of the CW LED light when the data rates were 9.6, 19.2, and 38.4 kbps, respectively. In this system, we used a 240-Hz sync pulse whose period was 4.16 ms, which was shorter than the maximum flickering time period of 5 ms that is generally considered to be safe. This configuration is very simple and useful in constructing indoor wireless sensor networks using the flicker-free LED lamps with dimming control capability.

So called quaternary quasi-orthogonal sequence spatial modulation (Q-QOS-SM) has been presented with an advantage of improved throughputs compared to the conventional SM and generalized spatial modulation (GSM) by virtue of a larger set size of QOSs and its minimized correlation value between these QOSs. However the Q-QOS-SM has been originally invented for limited transmit antennas of only powers of two. In this paper, by extending the Q-QOS-SM to any number of transmit antennas, we propose a generalized Q-QOS-SM, referred as G-QO-SM. Unlike the conventional Q-QOS-SM using the Q-QOSs of length of any power of two, the proposed G-QO-SM is constructed based on the Q-QOSs of only the lengths of 2 and 4. The proposed scheme guarantees the transmission of the total $N_t$ spatial bits with $N_t$ transmit antennas, and thus achieves greatly higher throughputs than the other existing schemes including the SM, GSM, Q-QOS-SM, Quadrature-SM, and Enhanced-SM. The performance improvements of the proposed G-QO-SM is justified by comparing the analytically derived BER upper bounds and also the exact Monte Carlo simulation results.

Spectral Amplitude Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC OCDMA) is an advanced technique in asynchronous environments. This paper proposes design and implementation of a novel quantum logic gate (QLG) code, with code construction algorithm generated without following any code mapping procedures for SAC system. The proposed code has a unitary matrices property with maximum overlap of one chip for various clients and no overlaps in spectra for the rest of the subscribers. Results indicate that a single algorithm produces the same length increment for codes with weight greater than two and follows the same signal to noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) calculations for a higher number of users. This paper further examines the performance of a QLG code based SAC-OCDMA system with NAND and direct detection techniques. BER analysis was carried out for the proposed code and results were compared with existing MDW, RD and GMP codes. We demonstrate that the QLG code based system performs better in terms of cardinality, which is followed by improved BER. Numerical analysis reveals that for error free transmission (10-9), the suggested code supports approximately 170 users with code weight 4. Our results also conclude that the proposed code provides improvement in the code construction, cross-correlation and minimization of noises.

Gear trains are combined with the planetary gear units and helical gear units. It is known that the combination type is decisive to the system performances of the transmissions. In this paper, within the commonly used range of the design requirements for medium and large scaled (1~8 MW) wind turbines, the transmission characteristics of the typical layouts of the gear train are investigated. According to the international standard by ANSI/AGMA/AWEA 6006-A03, the gear boxes are basically designed and compared with respect to the system lifes of 99% reliability, total weight, the power densities, overall diameter/length and the maximum stresses of the gear teeth. With these comparison works, the characteristics of the layouts of gear trains are discussed.

Si nanowires have exhibited unique optical characteristics, including nano-antenna effects due to the guided mode resonance, significant optical absorption enhancement in wide wavelength and incident angle range due to resonant optical modes, graded refractive index, and scattering. Since Si poor optical absorption coefficient due to indirect bandgap, all such properties have stimulated proposal of new optoelectronic devices whose performance can surpass that of conventional planar devices. We have carried out finite-difference time-domain simulation studies to design optimal Si nanowire array for solar cell applications. Optical reflectance, transmission, and absorption can be calculated for nanowire arrays with various diameter, length, and period. From the absorption, maximum achievable photocurrent can be estimated. In real devices, serious recombination loss occurring at the surface states is known to limit the photovoltaic performance of the nanowire-based solar cells. In order to address such issue, we will discuss how the geometric parameters of the array can influence the spatial distribution of the optical field (resulting optical generation rate) in the nanowires.
The fog screen is a device projecting the media to the aerosol flow field. As major parameters to generate dense and steady fog screen, shear stress, optical blockage ratio and SMD were obtained result through experiment. The micro droplet was generated by the piezo oscillation element, and the aerosol flow mixed with an air flow was sprayed into the vertical direction from the top of the fog screen through the 280 mm slot. For produce a dense, uniform fog screen, the shear effect, optical blockage ratio and SMD between aerosol and air curtain were measured. The minimum and maximum shear stress conditions were selected and it was confirmed that the optical transmission deviation of the aerosol flow field was small when the aerosol and air curtain flow rates were changed. When the aerosol and air curtain flow power were 18 V (1.51 m/s) and 24 V (2.55 m/s), respectively, under the condition of the minimum shear stress and laminar flow, the optical blockage ratios with the spray length were small, and it produced a most stable and high density uniform fog screen by injecting a constant of $10{\mu}m$ or less.

It is very important to control synchronization by inter-network delay compensation in high speed synchronous optcial transmission network systems. In this study we designed a delay measurement system based on OTDR using Rayleigh backscatterer in order to compensate for time delay due to the length of optical fiber line. We observed waveform variations on both averaging time and peak power of laser pulse. Finally, we executed experimental demonstration on its accuracy and test repeatability by comparison to the methods practically used in the industry. Experimental results show maximum error of 0.06usec and standard deviation of 0.021usec, which means it's possibly applied to delay control system for mobile repeaters and stations.

Extensive laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the effect of load amplitude, geogrid position, and number of geogrid layers, thickness of ballast layer and clay stiffness on behavior of reinforced ballast layer and induced strains in geogrid. A half full-scale railway was constructed for carrying out the tests, the model consists of two rails 800 mm in length with three wooden sleepers (900 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm). The ballast was overlying 500 mm thickness clay in two states, soft and stiff state. Laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the response of the ballast and the clay layers where the ballast was reinforced by a geogrid. Settlement in ballast and clay, soil pressure and pore water pressure induced in the clay were measured in reinforced and unreinforced ballast cases. It was concluded that the effect of frequency on the settlement ratio is almost constant after 500 cycles. This is due to that the total settlement after 500 cycles, almost reached its peak value, which means that the ballast particles become very close to each other, so the frequency is less effective for high contact particles forces. The average maximum vertical stress and pore water pressure increased with frequency.
The technique for calibrating standard particles larger than 1 $\mu$m by using an optical array sizing method has been established. The system consists of an optical microscope with transmission light source, a CCD camera, and a computer equipped with a frame grabber. The center distance between two spheres located at both ends of a row which consists of N spheres is measured in terms of pixel numbers, and divided by (N-1) to obtain the average pixel numbers per particle. This value is multiplied by length conversion constant, which has been determined in advance, to obtain the mean diameter of polystylene spheres. The length conversion constant is found from the microscopic image of calibrated standard stage micrometer plate. In order to reduce error in finding center positions of the scale and particles in the image, a software filter which dilates bright (or dark) object has been used. Spheres having nominal size of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10$\mu$m were measured, and the maximum deviation of the measured mean diameter valus from their certified values was 0.7%. Standard particles which is larger than 1 $\mu$m can be calibrated by this method with measuredment uncertainy (k=2) lees than 1.53%.
In this paper we propose a plasmonic color filter with a novel nanopattern. The suggested pattern, called a "polyperiodic hole array" (PPHA), is introduced to solve the angle dependence of the optical response that originates from the periodic structure. We set the diameter and period of the hole to make a green color filter, and set the unit-cell size and metal and dielectric thicknesses in consideration of the propagation length and skin depth. The periodic hole arrays are locally rotated to make a PPHA pattern, resulting in a globally aperiodic yet partially periodic pattern. As a result, compared to a general pattern, the PPHA nanostructured color filter has a maximum 40% improvement in spectral shift when the angle of incidence is increased from 0° to 30°. Transmittance reduction was also alleviated by 30%. This work will improve the performance of nanostructured color filters and help with nanotechnology being applied industrially to imaging devices, including displays and image sensors.
