The extended Tanimoto formula has been widely used to estimate the stability for the toe protection of the composite structure. However, the extended Tanimoto formula usually over-estimates armor weight when the incident waves approach the structure obliquely because the formula incident originally considered the normally incident wave cases. In this study, three-dimensional hydraulic model experiments were conducted to investigate the horizontal wave velocity under monochromatic and random wave conditions to investigate the prediction capability of the extended Tanimoto formula under the different incident wave angle conditions. The maximum horizontal wave velocity was measured near the toe for the normally incident wave condition. In the case of obliquely incident waves, the maximum horizontal wave velocity was measured under the stem wave generation condition. The results of the experiments showed a good agreement with the results by Takahashi et al.

As the wave impinges on and overtops the structure, a large highly aerated region is created in front of the structure and water splashs on top of the structure. The broken wave in front of the structure and associated green water on top of the structure are highly aerated containing not only a large number of bubbles but also very large sizes of bubbles. In this paper, the velocity field of the highly aerated region and the splashing water on the top is measured using a modified PIV method incorporating the traditional PIV method with the shadowgraphy technigue by correlating the ' texture ' of the bubble images. The velocity fields of a plunging wave impacting on a structure in a two-dimensional wave flume is measured. It is found that the maximum fluid particle velocity in flout of the structure during the impinging process is about 1.5 times the phase speed of the wave, while the maximum horizontal velocity above the top is less than the phase speed, It is also found that the dam breaking solution does not work well in predicting the green water velocity.

A semi-infinite parallel crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under anti-plane clamped displacement is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform a Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are determined, where the results give the more general expression applicable to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the parallel crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor and energy release rate are also obtained as a closed form, which are the results applicable to the problem both of dynamic and static crack under the same geometry as this study. The stress intensity factor approaches zero at the critical crack velocity which is less than the shear wave velocity, but in typical case of isotropic or orthotropic material agrees with the velocity of shear wave. Also a circular shear stress around crack tip is considered, from which the stress is shown to be approximately symmetric about the horizontal axis. Referring to the maximum stress criteria, it could be shown that a brenched crack is formed by crack growth as crack velocity increases.

To investigate varying wave impact pressure exerting at the crest wall of rubble mound seawall, depending on breaking wave properties, regular waves with different wave periods were generated. Wave velocity fields and void fraction were measured using bubble image velocimetry and simple combined wave gauge system (Na and Son, 2021). For the waves with shorter wave period, maximum horizontal velocity was less reduced compared to incident wave speed while breaking-induced air entrainment was occurred intensely, leading to a significant reduction of wave impact pressure at the crest wall. For the waves with longer wave periods, less air wave entrained and the wave structure followed a flip-through mode (Cooker and Peregrine, 1991), resulting in an abrupt increase of the impact pressure.
The present study examines similarity of behavior between an overtopping wave generated by a plunging wave and a dam-break flow through hydraulic model tests. The dam-break flow has been employed to estimate the overtopping effect on the basis of the dam-break flow's behavior similar to the overtopping. In this study, the overtopping velocity was measured by a modified image technique using bubble and bubble texture images called bubble image velocitmetry. From the measurements, the vertical profiles of horizontal overtopping velocity at cross-sections along the deck were presented and discussed. Maximum velocity and depth-averaged velocity at each cross-section were compared with an analytical solution solving the dam-break flow, Ritter's solution. The initial water depth of importance for the solution was determined from the tested wave condition and the overtopping measurements. The comparison shows that the solution with the initial water depth estimated using the front velocity of the overtopping wave is in good agreements with the measurements.
The flow regimes of continuously stratified flow over a double mountain and the effects of a double mountain on wave breaking, upstream blocking, and severe downslope windstorms are investigated using a mesoscale numerical model (ARPS). According to the occurrence or non-occurrence of wave breaking and upstream blocking, three different flow regimes are identified over a double mountain. Higher critical Froude numbers are required for wave breaking and upstream blocking initiation for a double mountain than for an isolated mountain. This means that the nonlinearity and blocking effect for a double mountain is larger than that for an isolated mountain. As the separation distance between two mountains decreases, the degree of flow nonlinearity increases, while the blocking effect decreases. A rapid increase of the surface horizontal velocity downwind of each mountain near the critical mountain height for wave breaking initiation indicates that severe downslope windstorms are enhanced by wave breaking. For the flow with wave breaking, the numerically calculated surface drag is much larger than theoretically calculated one because the region with the maximum negative perturbation pressure moves from the top to the downwind slope of each mountain as the internal jump propagating downwind occurs.

Present work shows a numerical method to analysis of interaction analysis between solitary wave and onshore bridge. Numerical simulation is carried out by TWOPM-3D (three-dimensional one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows), which is based on Navier-Stokes solver. To do this, the solitary wave is generated numerically in numerical wave channel, and numerical results and experimental results were compared and analyzed in order to verify the applicability of force acting on an onshore bridge. From this, we discussed precisely the characteristics of horizontal and vertical forces (uplift and downward forces) changes including water level and velocity changes due to the variation of solitary wave height, water depth, onshore bridge's location and type, and number of girder. Furthermore, It is revealed that the maximum horizontal and vertical forces acting on the girder bridge show different varying properties according to the number of girder, although each maximum force acting on the girder bridge is proportional to the increasement of incident solitary wave height, and the entrained air in the fluid flow affects the vertical force highly.
Tidal waves and the fluctuation of current are studied by use of observed data on tidal level, flow velocity and river discharge in the estuarine region of the Nakdong River. Observed data on the tidal level at five stations are used to obtain the fluctuation of amplitude and phase of tides, and the change of the wave speed versus distance from the river mouth. Comnining these tidal data with the vertical distribution of horizontal velocity data, some characteristics of the periodic tidal flow are deduced: (1)Diminishing rates of the tidal amplitude ratio η / η$\_$0/ at high tide were 0.058η$\_$0H/ /Km at neap tides. The constant of phase change, K, was 0.035rad/km. (2)While proceeding landward, the shape of the tidal wave changes from symmetrical to asymmetrical. The traveling speed of the tidal wave crest was estimated to be 3.6∼5.2m/sec, while that of the tidal wave trough was 2.4∼ 3.5m/sec. (3)The flowing speed of the water varies periodically in accordance with the tidal period. The maximum speed of landward flow appeared approximately at two hours before the high tide, while that of seaward flow at two hours before the low tide. (4)The upstream boundary is deduced approximately to be 50km at spring tide and 44km at neap tide from the tidal velocity decreasing. the tidal influence area is estimated approximately to be 65km from the tidal amplitude damping.

Two-dimensional imaging of $V_s$ profile becomes more important in Korea because of the large horizontal variation of soil stiffness. To obtain a shear-wave velocity profile in geotechnical practice, various seismic nondestructive investigation methods are being frequently used. In this study, harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) method is applied to the determination of $V_s$ profile to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. Field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because one experimental setup which consists of one pair of receivers is needed to determine $V_s$ profile of site. The proposed method uses the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity to minimize the effects of noise, and uses single array inversion which considers receiver locations. Field tests were performed in 2 sites in order to evaluate accuracy of test method and estimate the applicability of 2-D imaging by HWAW method. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the good accuracy and applicability of the proposed method were verified.
To develope shale play which is one of unconventional energy resources, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are necessary and those are applied to the place where the differential horizontal stress ratio (DHSR) is low. The differential horizontal stress ratio is generally calculated by the minimum and maximum horizontal stress, but it is also calculated from dynamic elastic constants and anisotropic parameters. In this study we analyzed anisotropic properties through the core samples from Danyang limestone and calculated DHSR. The three types of core samples shaped in three directions (vertical, parallel and 45 degree to bedding) were used for laboratory test. We measured P-, S-wave velocities, and density and then calculated dynamic elastic constants, compliance and DHSR. According to the results of the core sample analysis the calculated DHSR is 0.185. Thomsen parameters of the Danyang limestone used in this study are characterized by the P- and S-wave velocities varying along the bedding symmetry axis. It is observed that the DHSR value is more affected by the change in compliance value than the Poisson's ratio. It is necessary to measure SH-wave velocity for more correct petrophysical properties.
