It is investigated that Fe-C-N compound layer, defusion layer, and induction hardened layer produced by nitrocarburizing blend heat treatment in austenitic temperature with high frequency induction heating of mild steel specimen sprayed sursulf salt-bath. As the temperature of blend-heat treatment got increased, the thickness and hardness of compound layer and diffusion layer were increased. Compound layer(max. $35{\mu}m$), diffusion layer (max. 2.5mm) and induction hardened layer were gained in the shortest time 10 sec and in the case of $1000^{\circ}C$ total hardness depth of those was about 3.5mm. When the blend-heat treated specimen was reheated, maximum hardness of compound layer was dropped more than that of the reheated compound layer after sursulf treated, whereas hardness of diffusion layer was increased.
Variation of welded-joint hardness and tensile strength of a accelerated-cooled fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic steel with heat input was investigated. In a weld heat-affected zone, a softened zone was formed and it had lower hardness than that of a base metal. While the width of a softened zone increased continuously with an increase of heat input up to 100kJ/cm. the minimum hardness in a softned zone was almost constant after a continuos decrease up to 60KJ/cm. Because of a softened zone, the welded-joint was fractured in the HAZ and its maximum reduction of tensile strength was about 20%. Measured welded-joint tensile strength and calculated minimum tensile strength in a welded-joint was almost same, which means that the plastic restraint of a softened zone did not occur in this experiment. It is believed that as a softened zone width-to-specimen thickness ratio is as high as 2~6 in this experiment, the plastic restraint effect does not occur. Theoretical analysis shows that the plastic restraint effect occurs only when the ratio is below 0.5.
The influence of the boron content on the various properties of Ni-B alloy films produced by electrodeposition was investigated. The considerable reduction in grain size was observed with increasing boron content. The internal stress was tensile and increased linearly with increasing boron content. Hardness increased up to $750H_{v}$ at 2 at% boron and then kept the value to 11 at% boron for as-plated Ni-B coatings. The hardness of Ni-B films increased up to $1,250H_{v}$ due to the intermetallic$ Ni_3$B precipitation by the heat treatment, and maximum hardness of each coating increases with boron content. Wear resistance decreased with increasing the boron content because of high friction coefficient and brittle fracture of film which has higher content of boron.
The main objective of this paper is obtaining the optimal carburizing hours which impacts geometric tolerances, OPD(Over Pin Diameter), runout, hardness and fatigure strength of SCM415 spur gear. In order to observe the deformation of the gear, the circularity, squareness, OPD(Over Pin Diameter) and runout were measured at 3hour, 4hour and 5hour respectively. As the result, the 3hour situation is the best, which very similar with the 4hour one. Afterwards, with the purpose of getting the result of gear hardness, the surface hardness, maximum hardness and interior hardness were measured. The result is 5h situation is the best, and it's similar with 4hour one. At last, the fatigue tests have been done which receive the result that the 4h situation showed 9~12% fatigue strength improvement compared with the 3h and 5h ones. To sum up the results, the 4hour situation shows the best performance in accuracy, hardness and fatigue strength.
In the present work, it was investigated a behavior of hydrogen embrittlement at the subsurface zones of 590 DP steels by using the micro-Vickers hardness test. The micro-Vickers hardnessess of DP steels were measured to evaluate the degree of embrittlement as the effective hardening depths of subsurface zones with hydrogen charging conditions. The results showed that the distributions of micro-Vickers hardness in width varied from maximum hardness 239.5 Hv to minimum hardness 174 Hv, while the depth of effective hardening layer at the subsurface zones of DP steels was from $320{\mu}m$ to $460{\mu}m$ with hydrogen charging conditions, respectively. It was proposed that the distribution of microhardness be used as the evaluation index of the degree of embrittlement. But the variations of martensite volume fractions were not affected along depth of hardening at the same changing time, hydrogen charging times were appeared as an effective factor of the degree of embrittlement. Therefore, the micro-Vickers hardness test is an attractive tool for evaluation of hydrogen embrittlement at the subsurface zones of these DP steels.
Effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on the mechanical strength of Cu (conducting sheath) and Nb (diffusion barrier) of Cu/Nb/MgB2 superconducting was investigated. Wire- and tape-type Cu/Nb/MgB2 samples were irradiated at E-beam energy of 2.5 MeV and 5 mA and a maximum E-beam dose was 5×1017 e/m2. The hardness value of Cu and Nb region was measured by the Vickers micro-hardness method. In the case of the wire sample, the hardness of Cu and Nb increased proportionally as the dose was increased up to 5×1017 e/m2, whereas in the case of the tape sample, the hardness increased up to a dose of 0.5×1017 e/m2, and decreased slightly 5×1017 e/m2. The hardness increase of Cu and Nb is believed to be due to the decrease of the deformability of Cu and Nb due to the defects formed inside the materials by E-beam irradiation.
Boron-containing materials have several excellent properties, such as superlnardness, insulation and non-Rinear optical property. Recently, oxynitride compounds, such as Si(ON), Ti(ON), became the promising materials applied in diffusion barrier layer and solar cell. With the expectation of obtaining the hybrid property, we have firstly grown the BON thin film by radio frequency (R.F.) plasma enhanced metalorganic chemical vapm deposition (PEMOCVD) with 100 kHz frequency and trimethyl borate precursor. The plasma source gases used in this study were Ar and $H_2$, and two kinds of nhmgen source gases, $N_2$ and <$NH_3$, were also employed. The as-grown films were characterized by XPS, IR, SEM and Knoop microlhardness tester. The relationship between the films hardness and the growth rate indicated that the hardness of the film was dependent on several factors such as nitrogen source gas, substrate temperature and film thickness due to the variation of the composition and the structure of the film. Both nitrogen and carbon content could raise the film hardness, on which nitrogen content did stronger effect than carbon. The smooth morphology and continuous structure was benefit of obtaining high hardness. The maximum hardness of BON film was about 10 GPa.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the changes in hardness and microstructure of a dental multipurpose alloy after simulated complete firing with controlled cooling rate and holding time by characterizing the changes in hardness and microstructure after simulated firing with various cooling rates and holding times. Methods: Before hardness testing, the specimens were solution treated and then were rapidly quenched into ice brine. The specimens were completely fired in furnace. Hardness measurements were made using a Vickers microhardness tester. The specimens were examined at 15 kV using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Results: The maximum hardness value was obtained at stage 0 after simulated firing with various cooling rates (quick cooling, stage 0, stage 1, stage 2, stage 3). By the repetitive firing, the hardness of the tested alloy decreased gradually. By holding the specimen at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10-20min after simulated firing, the hardness increased apparently. However, to hold the alloy for long periods of time in the relatively high temperature after simulated firing resulted in the formation of thick oxidation layer. The oxide film formed on the surface of the alloy after simulated complete firing with controlled cooling rate, which was mainly composed of O and Zn. Conclusion: It is reasonable to hold the alloy at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10-20min after complete firing in other to improve the final hardness of the alloy.
Commercial carbon steels containing 0.2~0.55 wt.----C were plasma-nitrided or plasma nitrocarburized at $550^{\circ}C$ for 21.6Ks using $H_2-N_2$ or $H_2-N_2$-CO mixed gas respectively. The characteristics of hardening and wear-resistance of each treatment were studied and compared. And also microstructure of nitrided layer and nitrides formed in compound layer near surface were studied. All plasma-nitrided steels investigated showed remarkable increase of surface hardness with the increase of carbon content. But nitrocarburized steels resulted in higher surface-hardness than plasma-nitrided steels, which means that nitrocarburized has higher surface-hardening effect. Plasma-nitrided steels showed hardness increase in through-thickness direction near surface. And also nitrocarburized steels showed similar hardness distribution in through-thickness direction to that of plasma-nitrided steel. However, nitrocarburized steels had higher cross-sectional maximum-hardness than plasma-nitrided steels as much as 100Hv. Wear test showed that the amount of specific wear was reduced by both plasma-nitriding and nitrocarburized, showing that the amount of specific wear was not related to the hardness. But non-treated specimen showed that the amount of specific wear was related to the hardness.
The present study examined mechanical properties according to the change of outer circumference in the friction welding of A2024-T4 stock, which is used much as aircraft structure, truck wheel, stainless materials and A2024-T4 stock with 10 hollow at the center. Welding conditions were fixed at RPM 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 50MPa, friction time of 1.5sec, upset pressure of 120MPa and upset time of 2.0 seconds. From the result of this study were drawn conclusions as follows : According to the result of a tensile strength test, the solid shaft showed linear increase of tensile strength with the change of outer circumference, the hollow shaft showed maximum tensile stength when the length (L) was 2mm and decrease of tensile strength with the change of outer circumference, hardness appeared to increase and then decrease for welding interface, and it showed maximum hardness 155Hv at L=5mm of the solid shaft. Bending strength increased linearly far change of the distance (L) of outer circumference in the solid shaft and then decreased linearly in the hollow shaft. the result of examining tissue, the tissue grew finer around the welding interface and divided the basic material and the welding surface.
