  • Mobility of an indoor wheeled robot is affected by adhesion force that is related to various floor conditions. When the adhesion force between driving wheels and the floor decreases suddenly, the robot has slip state. First of all, this paper models adhesion characteristics and slip in wheeled robot. Secondly, the paper proposes estimation method of adhesion force coefficient according to slip velocity. In oder to overcome this slip problem, optimal slip velocity must be decided for stable movement of wheeled robot. The paper proposes an anti-slip control system based on an ordinary disturbance observer, that is, the anti-slip control is achieved by reducing the driving torque enough to give maximum adhesion force coefficient. These procedure is implemented using a Pioneer 2-DXE parameter.

  • Friction damping is one of the attractive vibration control technique for space structures due to its simplicity and large damping capacity. However, passive approaches for friction damping have a limitation because energy is no longer dissipated at sticking. In order to overcome this problem, semi-active control methods to adjust normal force at frictional interface have been studied in previous researches. In this paper, two semi-active friction control method is compared by simulating SDOF model of truss structure. The first approach is on-off control to maximize rate of energy dissipation, whereas the second concept is variable friction force control to minimize amplitude ratio for each half period. The maximum friction force, control variable in on-off control method, is obtained to minimize 1% settling time, and is different from optimal friction force in passive control. Simulation results show that performance of on-off control is better than that of variable friction force control in terms of settling time and controlled friction force.

  • Continuous sliding mode control is applied to turning process for cutting force regulation. The highest feedrate compatible with the allowable cutting force is applied in rough cutting process such that maximum productivity is ensured and tool breakage is avoided. The programmed feedrate is overridden after the control algorithm is carried out. However, most CNC lathe manufacturers offer limited number of data bits far feedrate override, thus resulting in nonlinear behavior of the machine tools. Such nonlinearity brings “quantized” effect, and the optimal faedrate is rounded off before being fed into the CNC system. To compensate for this problem, continuous sliding mode control is applied. Conventional switching control law at a sliding surface is replaced by a smooth control interpolation in a selected boundary layer to avoid the excitation of high-frequency dynamics. Simulation results are presented in comparison with those obtained by applying adaptive control.

  • This paper describes a contact atomic force microscope (AFM) that can be used for high-speed precision measurements of microstructured surfaces. The AFM is composed of an air-bearing X stage, an air-bearing spindle with the axis of rotation in the Z direction, and an AFM probe unit. The traversing distance and maximum speed of the X stage are 300 mm and 400 mm/s, respectively. The spindle has the ability to hold a sample in a vacuum chuck with a maximum diameter of 130 mm and has a maximum rotation speed of 300 rpm. The bandwidth of the AFM probe unit in an open loop control circuit is more than 40 kHz. To achieve precision measurements of microstructured surfaces with slopes, a scanning strategy combining constant height measurements with a slope compensation technique is proposed. In this scanning strategy, the Z direction PZT actuator of the AFM probe unit is employed to compensate for the slope of the sample surface while the microstructures are scanned by the AFM probe at a constant height. The precision of such a scanning strategy is demonstrated by obtaining profile measurements of a microstructure surface at a series of scanning speeds ranging from 0.1 to 20.0 mm/s.

  • This paper presents an active vibration control of cantilever beams under disturbances by a primary force. A direct velocity feedback control using a pair of PZT actuator and a velocity sensor is considered. Variation of the stability and performance with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair is investigated. It is found that the maximum gain varies with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair significantly. The maximum gain shows a symmetric distribution along the beam length with respect to the center point, although the boundary condition of the beam is unsymmetric. The control performance is affected by the location of the primary force as well as the location of the sensor/actuator pair. The active control system can more effectively reduce the vibration when the primary force is located close to the fixed boundary.

  • In this study, we investigated the operational limit of magnetic bearing-rotor system due to the maximum force limit and slew rjate limit of the electromagnetic actuator as a function of the time dependent control characteristics. The feedback gain of the controller varies the current of the electromagnet coil with the motion of the rotor. The distorsion of magnetic force due to the slew rate limit is not occurred jup to 30, 000 rpm in the magnetic bearing that we have a close relation with the rotational speed and vibration level of the rotor and the proportional gain of the controller. Therefore the maximum force limit determines the maximum allowable orbit radius of the magnetic bearing-rotor system. The maximum allowable vibration levels are exponentially decreased according to the increment of rotational speed and proportional gain of the controller.

  • Draft control is key technique in plow control system for automation of implement control system. To make the consistent draft force is an essential factor for preventing the reduction of working efficiency by tractor's slip and also improving the working efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop the draft sensor for draft control of plow and evaluate the usability of the algorithm of draft control system using proportional control valve. The developed draft control system could extract the draft force very well regardless of draft condition, change of setting draft force and response time in the response characteristic test. The maximum draft force at 3-Point linkage was 10,000 N and the deviation of the control system was 125.8 N in steady state condition. The developed control system worked very well with regard to the change of draft force in field and even in soil condition with soil reaction. The results of experiment showed the characteristics of response was sufficient to be used as the implement draft control system for tractor using proportional valve.

  • This study was carried out to observe the changes of Oiji quality during fermentation by preparing the samples with various functional ingredients (Chinese pepper(Sancho), onion, pine leaves) exerting antimicrobial effect. The pH values of all experiment groups decreased significantly in proportion to the ripening period(P<0.05). Control and Chinese pepper-added groups showed a rapid decrease in pH after 5 days of ripening, and Onion- and Pine leaves-added groups after 3 days of ripening. All experimental groups showed the lowest pH value at the 20th day of ripening. Rapid permeation of salt solution occured in all groups at the 3rd day of ripening. But the increase rate of salt permeation decreased gradually after 3 days of ripening. Lightness and redness in color decreased gradually in all groups, but the redness of Pine leaves-added group increased at the 30th day of ripening. Yellowness of control group was higher than that of others after 10 days of ripening(P<0.05), and the yellowness of pine leaves-added Oiji was the lowest among all after 5 days of ripening(P<0.05). The maximum cutting force of raw cucumber was observed at stem end followed by blossom end and middle part, and the Oiji samples also showed the same order at the early stage of ripening. In general, maximum cutting force of minor ingredient-added Oiji was higher than that of control and maximum cutting force was decreased at the 30th day of ripening. Onion-added group showed the highest value among all at the 40th day of ripening. Chinese pepper-added group was ranked low, but onion- and pine leaves-added groups were ranked high in sensory evaluation.
