Ginseng Saponins Enhance Maxi $Ca^{2+}-activated\;K^+$ Currents of the Rabbit Coronary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells

  • Potassium channels play an important role in regulating vascular smooth muscle tone. Four types of $K^+$ channels areknown to be expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells, and maxi $Ca^{2+}-activated\;K^+$ channel $(BK_{Ca})$ is a dominant type of $K^+$ channels in these cells. Because total ginseng saponins and ginsenoside $Rg_3$ cause vasodilation with unclear mechanisms, we hypothesized that total ginseng saponins and ginsenoside $Rg_3$ induce vasodilation via activation of maxi $Ca^{2+}-activated\;K+$ channels. Whole-cell BKe. currents were voltage-dependent with half maximum activation at -14 mV, and the currents were sensitive to nanomolar ChTX and millimolar TEA. External application of total ginseng saponins increased the anlplitude of the whole-cell BKe. current in a concentration-dependent manner. Single-channel analysis indicates that total ginseng saponins caused the channel opening for a longer period of time. Ginsenoside $Rg_3$ increased the amplitude of whole-cell $K_{Ca}$ currents without affecting voltage dependence of the currents and increased single-channel open time. Hence, the results suggest that ginseng saponin-induced vasodilation may be due to activation of $K_{Ca}$.

Effects of Breed, Insemination Time, Sperm Concentration, Farm and Year on Reproductive Performance of Sows Inseminated by Frozen Boar Semen (돼지에서 동결정액을 이용한 인공수정시 종모돈의 품종, 인공수정 횟수, 정자농도, 농장 및 연도가 번식성적에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of frozen boar semen on reproductive performance in swine artificial insemination (AI). Many factors, which were breeds, time of insemination, sperm concentration per dose, farm and year were investigated to improve reproductive performance efficiency. Boars were raised at Swine Artificial Insemination Center in National Livestock Research Institute, Sunghwan, Chungnam, Korea. This experiment was carried out from 1995 to 2000. There were no differences in swine AI with frozen boar semen using 5$m\ell$ maxi-straw among 3 breeds (Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc), 2 or 3 times insemination per estrus, and 3 different sperm numbers of 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0$\times$10$^{9}$ per dose of insemination. However, non-return rate and litter size of sows inseminated with frozen boar semen of commercial farms were different according to farm management system and inseminator's skill. Conception rate, farrowing rate and number of pigs born alive per litter by artificial insemination with frozen boar semen (5$m\ell$ maxi-straw) from 1995 to 1999 was 68.3~74.6%, 61.7~67.6% and 8.1~8.7 heads.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) has been reported to have many roles in vivo ranging from the neurotransmitter in brain to the relaxant in smooth muscles. Recently, using inside-out patches, Bolotina et al. (1) showed that relaxing effect of NO is aortic smooth muscle is through direct activation of Ca2+-activated K+ channels (maxi-K), resulting in hyperpolarization. (omitted)

  • Conventional bar code has the appearance of line bars and spaces, called as one-dimensional bar code. In contrast, the information in two-dimensional bar code is represented by either a small, rectangular or square with the types of mosaic and Braille. The two-dimensional bar code is much more efficient than one-dimensional bar code because it can allow to store and express large amounts of data in a small space and so far there is also a little information about decoding the Data Matrix in base 256 mode. According to the ISO international standards, there are four kinds of bar code: QR code, Data Matrix, PDF417, and Maxi code. In this paper, among them, we focus on describing the basic concepts of Data Matrix in base 256 mode, how to encode and decode them, and how to organize them in detail. In addition, Data Matrix can be organized efficiently depending on the modes of numeric, alphanumeric characters, and binary system and expecially, we focus on describing how to decode the Data Matrix code by four modes.

Comparison of the Efficiency from Raw and Processed Corns by Five Different DNA Extraction Methods (다섯 가지 DNA 추출방법에 의한 옥수수 원료 및 가공시료의 DNA 추출 효율의 비교)

  • In this study, the effects of five extraction methods for raw and processed corns were compared with respect to the integrity, yields and quality of DNA extracted from them and the results were assessed by PCR analysis. From the comparison of five extraction methods, DNA integrity showed a similar pattern. Amounts of genomic DNA obtained from the five extraction methods varies from $0.25{\mu}g\;to\;234{\mu}g$ per 1 g sample. The DNA yield extracted with CTAB method and DNeasy Plant Maxi kit is greater than that obtained from other extraction methods. These results would be applicable for the selection of an adequate extraction method for specific samples.

An Analysis to Construction Conditions of Tight Skirt for Sale (시판 타이트 스커트의 구성실태 분석)

  • The present study was designed to find out the construction conditions of tight skirt for sale in relation to its brand, target age and length. The 15 tight skirts each from 3 brand groups(designer character, national and minor brand) of 2 target age groups(youth and middle age) and the 15 tight skirts each from 3 skirt length groups(mini, natural line and maxi) of only the minor brand-a total of the 120 tight skirts on the market-were measured. The data were analyzed with use of SAS package. The statistics were based on frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and linear regression analysis. The main results were as follows. 1. There were significant differences in the construction conditions of tight skirt according to its brand and target age. There was a significant difference particurarly in the difference between hip girth and hem girth according to brand target age. The difference between hip girth and hem girth of designer's character brand skirt was larger than that of national brand & minor brand skirt, and that of skirt targeting the youth was larger than that of skirt targeting the middle aged. 2. There were significant difference particurarly in the differences in the construction conditions of tight skirt according to its length. There was a significant difference particurarly in the difference between hip girth and he girth according to skirt length, and that of maxi skirt was larger than that of mini & natural line skirt. There was a good correlation between skirt length and slit length and between skirt length and skirt length above the slit. The longer the skirt length was, the longer the slit length and the skirt length above the slit were.

A Study on Moving Fitness and Slit Length in Relation to Length & Silhouette of Tight Skirt (타이트 스커트 실루엣 및 길이에 따른 동작적합성과 트임길이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the moving fitness and slit length of tight skirt in relation to its length & silhouette. Five kinds of length, micro mini, mini, natural line, medi and maxi, and two kinds of siihuette, slim & straight-a total of ten tight skirts-were investigated. Ten college students were chosen for this experiment. The moving fitness was tested by measuring the step length, step width and step angle in the case of walking on the flat and going up the stairway & bus stair. The slit length was tested by measuring the back slit length needed in the case of going up stairway & bus stair. Data were analyzed with use of SAS pakage. The statistics were based on average, standard diviation, two-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. The main results were as follows. 1. There was significant difference in the moving fitness according to length & silhouette of tight skirt. The moving fitness of slim type was lower than that of straight type and the longer the skirt length was, the lower the moving fitness was. The significance appeared particularly in the case of going up the bus stair. 2. There was significant difference in the skirt length obove slit accorting to length & silhouette of tight skirt. The skirt length obove slit of slim type was shorter than that of straight type. The longer skirt length was, the longer it was from micro mini to natural line, that of medi skirt was shorter or a little longer than that of natural line skirt and there was little change from medi skirt to maxi skirt.

ON THE COMPLEX VARIABILITY OF THE SUPERORBITAL MODULATION PERIOD OF LMC X-4

  • LMC X-4 is an eclipsing high-mass X-ray binary exhibiting a superorbital modulation with a period of ~ 30:5 days. We present a detailed study of the variations of the superorbital modulation period with a time baseline of ~ 18 years. The period determined in the light curve collected by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) significantly deviates from that observed by the All Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Using the data collected by RXTE/ASM, MAXI, and the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) onboard Swift, we found a significant period derivative, $\dot{P}=(2.08{\pm}0.12){\times}10^{-5}$. Furthermore, the O{C residual shows complex short-term variations indicating that the superorbital modulation of LMC X-4 exhibits complicated unstable behaviors. In addition, we used archive data collected by the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on RXTE to estimate the orbital and spin parameters. The detected pulse frequencies obtained in small time segments were fitted with a circular orbital Doppler shift model. In addition to orbital parameters and spin frequency for each observation, we found a spin frequency derivative of $\dot{v}=(6.482{\pm}0.011){\times}10^{-13}Hz{\cdot}s^{-1}$. More precise orbital and spin parameters will be evaluated by the pulse arrival time delay technique in the future.

Quantitative Evaluation of Fatigue Strength by Spheroidal of Graphite in Ductile Cast Iron (구상화율에 의한 구상 흑연주철재의 피로강도의 정량적 평가)

  • Although the problems of defects and nonmetallic inclusion in metal fatigue are very complicated it is particularly important to view these problems from the perspective that defects and inclusions are virtually equivalent to small cracks. This concept will help us to understand various fatigue phenomena caused by graphite of Ductile cast iron. Therefore in this study different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure and pheroidal ratio of graphite of 70%, 80% and 90% GCD40 , GCD45-2 series have been carried out rotary bending fatigue test estimated the maxi-mum size of graphite investigated correlation. It was concluded as follows : (1) in ductile cast iron which have various spheroidal ratio of graphite the fatigue limit C series of 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite is the highest. While A series of 70% spheroidal ratio of graphite is the lowest (2) fatigue limit was predicted by vickers hardness(Hv) of matrix {{{{ SQRT {area } }}}} of maximum size graphite inputting Murakami and Endo's formula.

  • Anion-exchange porous hollow-fiber membranes with a thickness of about 1.2 mm and a pore size of about $0.30{\mu}m$ were used as a supporting matrix to immobilize cycloisomaltooligosaccharide glucanotransferase (CITase). CITase was immobilized to the membrane via anion-exchange adsorption and by subsequent enzymatic cross-linking with transglutaminase, the amount of which ranged from 3 to 110 mg per g of the membrane. The degree of enzyme multilayer binding was equivalent to 0.3 to 9.8. Dextran, as the substrate, was converted into seven- to nine-glucose-membered cycloisomaltooligosaccharides (CI-7, -8, and -9) at a maxi mum yield of $28\%$ in weight at a space velocity of 10 per hour during the permeation of $2.0(w/w)\%$ dextran solution across the CITase-immobilized porous hollow-fiber membrane.
