  • A TEM study on proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ reaction at sub-eutectoid temperatures has been made in hypoeutectoid Ti-3.gw/o Co and Ti-5.2w/o Fe alloys. Widmanstatten ${\alpha}$ plates were formed in both alloys within the ${\beta}$ matrix with some modification of degenerate forms. These degenerate plates were formed by the sympathetic nucleation of ${\alpha}$ plates at ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries. Three types of sympathetic nucleation, i.e., edge-to-edge, face-to-edge, face-to-face, were found in both alloys. The edge-to-edge sympathetically nucleated crystals formed a low-angle boundary between two crystals. The ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries were found to be partially coherent interfaces which consist of regularly spaced misfit dislocations. The growth of these interphase boundaries were accomplished by the lateral movement of growth ledges. The intersection points of two ${\alpha}$ plates or the low angle boundaries which had formed by edge-to-edge sympathetic nucleation played a role as the potential sources of growth ledges during the growth of plate. The interfacial structures and the spatial morphologies of the degenerate proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ plates would be expected to influence the nucleation and growth of the succeeding eutectoid decomposition process.

  • As fiber reinforced composite materials are widely used in aircraft, space structures and robot arms, the on-line cure monitoring during the cure process of the composite materials has become an important research area for the better quality and productivity. In this paper, the dielectric circuit of the Wheatstone bridge type for measuring the dissipation factor during cure of thermsetting resin matrix composite materials was designed and manufactured. Also, the dielectric sensor for the cure monitoring of high temperature cure composites was developed and tested. The residual thermal stresses of the dielectric sensor during high temperature cure were analyzed by the finite element method and its dielectric characteristics at high temperature cure were analyzed by the finite element method and its dielectric characteristics at high temperature were evaluated. The on-line cure monitoring of the BMI(Bismaleimide) resin was performed using the developed Wheatstone bridge type circuit and the high-temperature dielectric sensor.

  • Polymer concrete (PC) has been favoured over Portland cement concrete when low permeability, high adhesion, and/or high durability against aggressive environments are required. In this research, a new class of PC incorporating Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) is introduced. Four PC mixes with different MWCNTs contents were examined. MWCNTs were carefully dispersed in epoxy resin and then mixed with the hardener and aggregate to produce PC. The impact strength of the new PC was investigated by performing low-velocity impact tests. Other mechanical properties of the new PC including compressive, flexural, and shear strengths were also characterized. Moreover, microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of PC incorporating MWCNTs was performed. Impact test results showed that energy absorption of PC with 1.0 wt% MWCNTs by weight of epoxy resin was significantly improved by 36 % compared with conventional PC. Microstructural analysis demonstrated evidence that MWCNTs significantly altered the chemical structure of epoxy matrix. The changes in the microstructure lead to improvements in the impact resistance of PC, which would benefit the design of various PC structural elements.

  • Fatigue phenomena usually occur in the structures such as bridges subjected to repeated loading with increasing service year. Especially, applied stresses happen to approach to design values due to rapid increase of traffic volume and vehicle weight, so it gives serious effects to the stability of bridges. Therefore, in this paper, the data for load carrying capacity of bridges obtained from field tests were analysed statistically to investigate bridge behaviour and a basic approach to estimate the impact factor was proposed after a comparison war made between field-test data and the calculated values obtained by using matrix structural analysis method.

  • A general procedure for the design sensitivity analysis of structural dynamic problems has been presented in frame of the FRF-based substructuring formulation. For a system response function, the proposed method gives a parametric design sensitivity formula in terms of the partial derivatives of the connection element properties and the transfer matrix of the subsystems. The derived design sensitivity formula is applied to an engine mount system. An interior noise problem in the passenger car is analyzed using the FRF-based substructuring method and the proposed formulation is adopted to study the response variations with respect to the dynamic characteristics of the engine mounts and the bushes. To obtain the FRFs, a finite element model is built for the engine mount structures, and test data is used for the trimmed body including cabin cavity. The comparison of sensitivities derived by the proposed method and the finite difference method shows that the proposed method is efficient and accurate. The proposed sensitivity analysis method indicates effectively the most sensitive location to the interior noise among the engine mounts and the bushes.

  • To predict vibrational energy density of simple structural-acoustic coupled systems in medium-to-high frequency ranges, Power Flow Finite Element Method(PFFEM) is used, and PFFEM sofiware, PFADS has been developed for the vibration predictions and analysis of coupled system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. However, it needs to consider vibro-acoustic coupled analysis to get more accurate results. Prior to implement vibro-acoustic coupled analysis functions in PFADS, research on vibro-acoustic coupled analysis using PFFEH is performed for simple models. These predictions include the indirect transmission path associated, and also the direct transmission path, and the formulation is extended to structural system model by using appropriate modifications to structural-acoustic and acoustic-acoustic joint matrices. Concerning the waves in plate and acoustic, it is possible to calculate the structural-acoustic full matrix of a model using PFFEM, and the formulations developed are implemented for two rooms surrounded by plates.

  • Although tracking methods are efficient and popular for vessel segmentation, they require a seed to initiate an instance of tracking. In this paper, a new method to detect new seeds for tracking of arterial segments from CT angiography (CTA) and to construct a vascular structure is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on shape analysis of connected components in a volume of interest around a vessel segment which was already extracted by tracking. The eigenvalues of the covariance matrix are used as the shape features for detection. The experimental results on actual clinical data showed that the results totally revealed the arterial tree not hindered by bone or veins. In visual comparison to a method which combines registration and subtraction of both pre-contrast and post-contrast CT volumes, the proposed method produced comparable results to the reference method and were confirmed of its feasibility for clinical use of reducing the cost and burden of patients.

  • Many investments and works being continued to preserve green ocean in each countries of the world. Especial1y, the researches on the prevention of marine oil pollution being strengthened. It is not easy to disclose sludge oils that were produced necessarily in the ships operation, so that they are transferred to shore treating facility after collected inside the ship's sludge tank mostly. However, this shore transferring method is not only costly and time consuming but also entails risk of oil pollution. In this regard, it will be the best way to manage the sludge oils inside ship itself. The purpose of this study is to device an ultrasonic breaking systems which recycle the sludge oil from ships into usable oil to be burnt. In this paper, the first place, matrix structures of sludge fuel oil(SFO) and sludge lubricating oil(SLO) with the irradiation time for ultrasonic vibrator were interpreted. And, erosion damage for vibrator horn tip which is one of important part of ultrasonic breaking systems was examined under such an environment of the sludge oils. The material for horn tip is being made of SS41 steel and its erosion phase was investigated with variation of the vibration amplitude of 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 24${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ as well as the change of temperature in the oil environments. It is suggested that the experimental results can be helpful to the development of sludge oil disposing systems for the vessel.

  • The author examined for observing the structures of pyrenoid and cell wall of three strains of Chlorella ellipsoidea and relation of pyrenoid to starch grain formation at the ultrastructure level. 1. The development of pyrenoid of Chlorella species from the time of its initiation and its subdetail sequent activities are described in some pictures. 2. Close correlation between the findings of light microscopy and electron microscopy is proved. 3. The pyrenoid is a dynamic organellae which continues to change its appearance thoughout the development of the Chlorella cell. 4. The starch grains are continously formed by deposition of carbohydrate within the chloroplast with the aid of pyrenoid factors. 5. Some parental starch grains are passed on the daughter cell during cell division. 6. The Da stage cells contain only chlaroplast without pyrenoid matrix. In Da stage a pyrenoid is surrounded by starch and starch grains appear in chloroplast lamellae. In $L_1L_2$ stages, large starch grains of lens form accumulate in cell. In $L_3$ stage pyrenoid disappears for a time and starch grains are scattered. In cell division stage starch grains are divided into four groups. In $L_4$ stage, pyrenoid substance appears temporarily and disappears soon. At this stage the cell is constituted of Dn cell containing chloroplast only. 7. The cellular boundary of JE strain except Y 815 and Y 511 strain contains 250.angs. intermediate layer of unknown chemical composition between the fibrillar cellulose wall and the out capsule layer.

  • Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is one of the most promising construction materials because it exhibits high performance, such as through high strength, high durability, and proper rheological properties. However, it has low tensile ductility compared with other normal strength grade high ductile fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. This paper presents an experimental study on the tensile behavior, including tensile ductility and crack patterns, of UHPC reinforced by hybrid steel and polyethylene fibers and incorporating plastic beads which have a very weak bond with a cementitious matrix. These beads behave as an artificial flaw under tensile loading. A series of experiments including density, compressive strength, and uniaxial tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the tensile behavior including tensile strain capacity and cracking pattern of UHPC investigated in this study can be controlled by fiber hybridization and artificial flaws.
