At present, the time of easy oil and gas is over. Now, the largest part of fossil fuels is concentrated in the deepest levels of tectonic structures and in the sea shelves. One of the most cumbersome operations of their extraction is the bore-hole drilling. In connection with austere tectonic and climate conditions, their drivage every so often is associated with great and diversified technological difficulties causing emergencies on frequent occasions. As a rule, they are linked with drill string accidents. A key role in prediction of these situations should play methods of theoretical modelling. For this reason, there is a growing need for development and implementation of new numerical methods for computer simulation of critical and post-critical behavior of drill strings (DSs). In this paper, the processes of non-linear deforming of a DS in cylindrical cavity of a deep bore-hole are considered. On the basis of the theory of curvilinear flexible rods, non-linear constitutive differential equations are deduced. The effects of the longitudinal non-uniform preloading, action of torque and interaction between the DS and the bore-hole surface are taken into account. Owing to the use of curvilinear coordinates in the constraining cylindrical surface and a specially chosen concomitant reference frame, it became possible to separate the desired variables and to reduce the total order of the equation system. To solve it, the method of continuation the solution by parameter and the transfer matrix technique are applied. As a result of the completed numerical analysis, the critical states of the DS loading in the cylindrical channels of inclined bore-holes are found. It is shown that the modes of the post-critical deforming of the DS are associated with its irregular spiral curving prevailing in the zone of bottom-hole-assembly. The possibility of invariant state generation during post-critical deforming is established, condition of its bifurcation is formulated. It is shown that infinite variety of loads can correspond to one geometrical configuration of the DS. They differ each from other by contact force functions.

A ring R is called IFP, due to Bell, if ab=0 implies aRb=0 for $a,b{\in}R$. Huh et al. showed that the IFP condition need not be preserved by polynomial ring extensions. But it is shown that ${\sum}^n_{i=0}$$E_{ai}E$ is a nonzero nilpotent ideal of E whenever R is an IFP ring and $0{\neq}f{\in}F$ is nilpotent, where E is a polynomial ring over R, F is a polynomial ring over E, and $a_i^{'s}$ are the coefficients of f. we shall use the term near IFP to denote such a ring as having place near at the IFPness. In the present note the structures of IFP rings and near-IFP rings are observed, extending the classes of them. IFP rings are NI (i.e., nilpotent elements form an ideal). It is shown that the near-IFPness and the NIness are distinct each other, and the relations among them and related conditions are examined.
Carbon fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites have good oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance. These properties have allowed the composites to be applied to high-temperature structures. In this study, $C_f/SiC$ composites were fabricated via precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process, including liquid phase infiltration and chemical vapor curing using cyclohexene. The final $C_f/SiC$ composites, which have gone through the PIP process five times, showed a density of $1.79g/cm^3$, as compared to a density of $0.43g/cm^3$ for pre-densified bare carbon fiber preform. As for the oxidation resistance characteristics, the weight of $C_f/SiC$ composite was maintained at 81% at $1400^{\circ}C$ in air for 6 hours. Chemical vapor curing (CVC) using cyclohexene has shown to be an effective method to achieve high densification, leading to increased oxidation resistance.
A theory of the helix/coil transition for $\alpha$ helical dimer such as $\alpha$ tropomycin and paramycin is developed. The treatment differs from those formulated previously for oligopeptide dimer which is explained by the matrix method using Zimm-Bragg parameter: In the present treatement, it is explained by the zipper model which can account for the dangling H-bond. We calculate the fractional helicity in $\alpha$ helical dimer as a function of helix initiation $constant(\sigma)$, helix stability constant(${\xi}$) and hydrophobic interaction parameter(w). For $\alpha$ tropomycin, the helix stability profile is also calculated. The transitions of this oligomer due to the change of temperature and the concentration of oligopeptide involve simultaneous dissociation of the dimer. The transitions of dimers which have cross-linked S-S bonds or have long chains don't occur, because they keep always helical structures. The transitons due to the concentration of the oligopeptides are steeper than those due to the chain length or temperature.
This research aims to develop an algorithm of optimal transducer placement for health monitoring of large structural system. The structural vibration response-based health monitoring is considered one of the best for the system which requires a long-term, continuous monitoring. In its experimental modal testing, however, it is difficult to decide on the measurement locations and their number, especially for complex structures, which have a major influence on the quality of the results. In order to minimize the number of sensing operations and optimize the transducer location while maximizing the accuracy of results, this paper discusses about an optimum transducer placement criterion suitable for the identification of structural damage for continuous health monitoring. As a criterion algorithm, it proposes the Kinetic Energy Optimization Technique (EOT), and then addresses the numerical issues which are subsequently applicable to actual experiment where a bridge model is used. By using the experimental data, it compares the EOT with the EIM(Effective Indefence Method) which is generally used to optimize the transducer placement for the damage identification and control purposes. The comparison conclusively shows that the EOT algorithm proposed in this paper is preferable when a structure is to be instrumented with fewer sensors for monitoring purpose.
Dislocations are basic crystal defects and represent one-dimensional native nanostructures embedded in a perfect crystalline matrix. Their structure is predefined by crystal symmetry. Two-dimensional, self-organized arrays of such nanostructures are realized reproducibly using specific preparation conditions (semiconductor wafer direct bonding). This technique allows separating dislocations up to a few hundred nanometers which enables electrical measurements of only a few, or, in the ideal case, of an individual dislocation. Electrical properties of dislocations in silicon were measured using MOSFETs as test structures. It is shown that an increase of the drain current results for nMOSFETs which is caused by a high concentration of electrons on dislocations in p-type material. The number of electrons on a dislocation is estimated from device simulations. This leads to the conclusion that metallic-like conduction exists along dislocations in this material caused by a one-dimensional carrier confinement. On the other hand, measurements of pMOSFETs prepared in n-type silicon proved the dominant transport of holes along dislocations. The experimentally measured increase of the drain current, however, is here not only caused by an higher hole concentration on these defects but also by an increasing hole mobility along dislocations. All the data proved for the first time the ambipolar behavior of dislocations in silicon. Dislocations in p-type Si form efficient one-dimensional channels for electrons, while dislocations in n-type material cause one-dimensional channels for holes.
In this study, experimental findings on the resistance to magnesium sulfate attack of portland cement mortar and paste specimens incorporating metakaolin (MK) are presented. Specimens with four replacement levels of metakaolin (0, 5, 10 and 15% of cement by mass) were exposed to solutions with concentrations of 0.424% and 4.24% as $MgSO_4$ at ambient temperature. The resistance of mortar specimens was evaluated through visual examination and linear expansion measurements. Additionally, in order to identify the products formed by magnesium sulfate attack, microstructural analyses such as XRD, DSC and SEM/EDS were also performed on the paste samples incorporating metakaolin. Results confirmed that mortar specimens with a high replacement level of metakaolin exhibited lower resistance to a higher concentration of magnesium sulfate solution. It was found that the negative effect of metakaolin on the magnesium sulfate attack is partially attributed to the formation of gypsum and thaumasite. Conclusively, it is necessary to pay a special attention when using metakaolin in concrete structures, particularly under highly concentrated magnesium sulfate environment.

Owing to the high specific strength and stiffness of composite materials, they are extensively used in mechanical systems and in vehicle industries. However, most mechanical structures experience repeated load and fatigue. Therefore, it is important to perform fatigue analysis of fiber-reinforced composites. The properties of composite laminates vary depending upon the stacking sequence and stacking direction. Fatigue damage of composite laminates occurs according to the following sequence: matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. In this study, fatigue tests were performed for damage analysis. Fatigue damages, which have to be considered in fatigue analysis, are determined by using the stiffness values calculated from hysteresis loops, and the obtained fatigue damage curve is examined using Mao's equation and Abdelal's equation.
A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.

The most effective material in the shape memory alloy(SMA) is the TiNi alloy, because its shape recovery characteristics are very excellent. We molded the composite material with shape memory function. The fiber of it is $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and matrix of it is epoxy resin(Araldite B41, Hardner HT903. Ciba Geigy), its adhesive and optical sensitivity are very excellent. It was assured that the composite material could be used as model material of photoelastic experiment for intelligent materials or structures. In this research, the composite material with shape memory function is used as model material of photoelastic experiment. Photoelastic experimental hybrid method is developed in this research, it is assured that it is useful on the obtaining stress intensity factor and the separation of stress components from only isochromatic data. The measuring method of stress intensity factor of intelligent material by photoelastic experiment is introduced. In the mode I state, we can know that stress intensity factors are decreased more than 50% of stress intensity factor of room temperature when temperature of fiber is greater than 4$0^{\circ}C$, prestrain greater than 5% and fiber volume ratio greater than 0.42% and that stress intensity factors are decreased by 100% when fiber volume ratio is greater than 0.84%, prestrain greater than 5% and temperature greater than 60 $^{\circ}C$.
