  • This talk demonstrates diverse patterned structures utilizing in-situ self-organization and phase separation of the materials into an ordered fashion. The patterned structures in this talk include electrospun nanofibers and electrosprayed microparticles embedding small particles. The positions of the small particles are in-situ controlled during the electrohydrodynamic process by the interaction with the polymer matrix. Another topic of the talk includes selective deposition of spin-coated materials on a corrugated surface that was prepared by buckling of polymer thin films. Solution are strong tendency to be positioned in the trench area of the surface, which facilitates the fabrication of micropatterns of diverse materials.

  • The asymmetric hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the wet spining of polyetherimide dope solution and the effect of hollow fiber structures on the permeation characteristics of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gases through these membrane were investigated. As the concentration of the $\gamma$-butyrolactone (GBL) in dope solution, acting as a swelling agent was increased, the structure of hollow fiber was changed from the finger to sponge type. The permeabilities of gases (CO$_{2}$, N$_{2}$) through these membrane were measured over the wide range of pressure under different temperature. The effect of water vapor on the permeabilities of gases was also investigated. The measured permeabilities showed the different characteristics depending on the structure of membranes. It was found that the flow through the pores were dominant over the polymers matrix. Blocking effect by water vapor in the pores of skin layer greatly improved the ideal separation factor of carbon dioxide/nitrogen.

  • End-Labeled Free-Solution Electrophoresis (ELFSE) is a new technique that is a promising bioconjugate method for DNA sequencing (or separation) and genotyping by both capillary and microfluidic device electrophoresis. Because ELFSE enables high-resolution electrophoretic separation in aqueous buffer alone (i.e., without a polymer matrix), it eliminates the need to load viscous polymer networks into electrophoresis microchannels. To achieve microchannel DNA separations with high performance, ELFSE requires monodisperse perturbing entities (i.e., drag-tags), which create a large amount of frictional drag when pulled behind DNA during free-solution electrophoresis, and which have other properties suitable for microchannel electrophoresis. In this article, the theoretical concepts of ELFSE and the required characteristics of the drag-tag molecules for the ultimate performance of ELFSE are reviewed. Additionally, the merits and limitations of current drag-tags are also discussed in the context of recent experimental data of ELFSE separation (or sequencing).

  • In the present study, formation of yard and shell has been investigated in as-melt-spun $Gd_{30}Ti_{25}Al_{25}Co_{20}$ alloy using a variety of transmission electron microscopy techniques. The phase separation during cooling leads to the formation of the microstructure consisting of amorphous droplets with different size scales embedded in the amorphous matrix. Due to the interdiffusion at the interface after the first-step phase separation, ~50 nm-thick yard develops on the surface of the primary droplet particle. Due to the critical wetting phenomenon, ~5 nm thickness shell enveloping the droplet forms. The sell is enriched in Co and Ti, implying that the composition is close to that of the droplet.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of a rotor-bearing spindle system for a ultra centrifuge (80,000 RPM) supported by ball bearings with nonlinear stiffness characteristics. To obtain the nonlinear bearing stiffnesses, a ball bearing is modeled in five degrees of freedom and is analyzed quasi-statically. The dynamic behaviors of the nonlinear rotor-bearing system are analyzed by using a transfer-matrix method iteratively. For optimization. we use the cost function that simultaneously minimizes the weight of a rotor and maximizes the separation margins to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. Augmented Lagrange Multiplier (ALM) method is employed for the nonlinear optimization problem. The result shows that the rotor-bearing spindle system is optimized to obtain 9.5% weight reduction and 21% separation margin.

  • This study introduced waste water treatment method by superconducting HGMS(High Gradient Magnetic Separation). HGMS treatment method is high efficient method for various waste water, we have surveyed superconducting magnetic separation technology. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system. In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS, it was made clear that the fine para-magnetic particles in the wasted water obtained from steelmaking process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.

  • Protein phosphorylation is one of most important post-translational modifications (PTMs) and plays an important role in regulation of protein function. Here we develop a method for a global identification of phosphopeptides and phosphorylation sites using nano-LC MS/MS. We compared two separation methods, C4 and strong cation ion exchange (SCX). Before phosphopeptides enrichment with $TiO_2$, total proteins from Rat 1 cells have been separated using C4 column or tryptic peptides of proteins from the cells have been separated using SCX column. Finally, we have detected 52 phosphorylation sites on 41 proteins from SCX method and 375 phosphorylation sites on 252 proteins from C4 method, and determined the function and localization of identified phosphoproteins using DAVID software. In particular, we showed new phosphorylation sites from membrane proteins related to various cell signaling mechanisms. This method may contribute to study global signal networks induced by various signals including ligands and drugs.

  • This paper presents a new kurtosis-based algorithm for blind separation of convolutively mixed source signals. The algorithm whitens the signals not only spatially but also temporally beforehand. A separator is built for the whitened signals and it exists in the set of para-unitary matrices. Since the set forms a curved manifold, it is hard to treat its elements. In order to avoid the difficulty, this paper introduces the Cayley transformation for the para-unitary matrices. The transformed matrix is referred to as para-skew-Hermitian matrix and the set of such matrices forms a linear space. In the set of all para-skew-Hermitian matrices, the kurtosis-based algorithm obtains a desired separator. This paper also shows the algorithm's application to electrogastrogram datum which are observed by 4 electrodes on subjects' abdomen around their stomachs. An electrogastrogram contains signals from a stomach and other organs. This paper obtains independent components by the algorithm and then extracts the signal corresponding to the stomach from the data.

  • To fabricate porous SiC candle filter for filtration facility of the IGCC system, the candle type filter preforms were fabricated by ramming and vacuum extrusion process. A commercially available ${\alpha}$-SiC powders with various particle size were used as starting raw materials, and $44\;{\mu}m$ mullite, $CaCO_3$ powder were used as non-clay based inorganic sintering additive. The candle typed preforms by ramming process and vacuum extrusion were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method and particle size of filter matrix on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure of the sintered porous SiC candle tilters were investigated. The sintered porous SiC filters which were fabricated by ramming process have more higher density and strength than extruded filter in same particle size of the matrix, and its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were $2.00\;g/cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens by different forming method was performed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2400h using IGCC syngas atmosphere for estimation of long-term reliability of the candle filter matrix.
