  • What is the aim of mathematics education? Current aims of mathematics education often lack the multidimensionality needed to account for a successful experience in mathematics. In this short paper, we argue for a multidimensional aim of mathematics education via the construct of flourishing. Flourishing is derived from the notion of eudaimonia, which broadly refers to achieving the "highest good," or living a well-lived life. Building on prior research, we operationalize flourishing as an aggregate of several positive affective, behavioral, cognitive, and social traits, all of which contribute to students' propensities to achieve the "highest good" in mathematics. In particular, we propose five traits which contribute to students' propensities to achieve the "highest good" (i.e., flourish) in mathematics: (1) positive emotions toward mathematics; (2) engagement in mathematics; (3) community in mathematics; (4) meaning in mathematics; (5) perceived competence in mathematics. Thus, we argue that one productive aim of mathematics education is to support students in fulfilling each of these traits, which ultimately leads to flourishing in mathematics. To supplement our theoretical stance, we offer suggestions for measuring flourishing as an aim. We close this short paper by describing the implications that such an aim might suggest for pedagogy, policy, and research.

  • The integration of mathematics education is required Fundamentally discussion about the nature and purpose of mathematics education. After the theoretical discussion of that, Practical approach of that can be correctly realized. However, It is the impression that theoretical discussions and practical action about the current discourse about integration in mathematics education are the wrong order. To understand the practical action for the integrated approach in mathematics education, theoretical discussion of the integrated approach of mathematical education is properly required.

  • Equity in mathematics education focuses on the relationship between social inequality caused by factors including culture and race. Equity in mathematics education has recently been recognized as one of the important issues of mathematics education and may provide grounds for setting the new direction of mathematics education for the future society. However, research on mathematics education equity in South Korea is still insufficient. The purpose of the paper is to provide implications for mathematics education research by reviewing the the literature regarding mathematics education equity. Focusing on 195 previous studies, I analyzed the significance of discussions on mathematics education equity in mathematics education, the concept of mathematics education equity, and research questions. In addition, I divided the previous studies into five categories based on their research questions: mathematics teachers, mathematics curriculum, mathematics classrooms, mathematics assessment, and socio-cultural environments surrounding mathematics classrooms. The analysis of the study are expected to provide implications in terms of new research questions and methods to domestic mathematics education researchers.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to develope elementary mathematics teaching-learning programs for pre-service elementary teachers. The elementary mathematics education program developed in this work is divided into two parts: One is the theory, the other is the practice. The theory deals with the foundations of mathematics, the objectives of mathematics education, the history of mathematics education in Korea, the psychology of mathematics learning, the theories of mathematics teaching and learning, and the methods of assessment. With respect to the practice, this study examines the background knowledge and activities of numbers and their operation, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability, pattern and function.

  • The Ministry of Education Science and Technology represented National Mathematics Education Advance Plan in 2012. The plan is focused on reinforcing mathematics education, improving understanding about mathematics, and enhancing self-guided learning. After the National Mathematics Education Advance Plan new middle school mathematics textbooks have been developed and they will be used from 2013. The purpose of this study is to analyse those mathematics textbooks to find how the National Mathematics Education Advance Plan is affected to the mathematics textbooks. This study found some important aspects affected from the Advance Plan to those textbooks and some implications for the future Korean mathematics education.

  • The character education has been regarded as important in nature and purpose of mathematics education. A discussion about models for the teaching of character to a student has been. However, The character education of teachers has not gathered as much attention as that of students in mathematics education. How to educate morally and ethically sound mathematics teachers is an important research topic to be sincerely inquired in current. Little attention has been given to the way how we prepare a morally humane pre-mathematics teacher. This paper inquires into the issues of character education in pre-mathematics teacher education.

  • In the history of mathematics education, different opinions as to how to view the phenomenon of mathematics education have been suggested in various ways. As those conflicting opinions have caused fundamental tensions in the phenomenon of mathematics education, they remain fundamental standpoints that have been continuously advocated until now - not limited in a certain period. It can be argued that this situation was caused by partial or fragmentary understanding of the phenomenon of mathematics education. If we are pursuing not a partial knowledge but a complete understanding of mathematics education, how should it be formed to comprehensively study the entire phenomenon of mathematics education? To answer this question, Complex structure in phenomenon of Mathematics Education can be proposed. It is an explanation for the opposing opinions existing in the phenomenon of mathematics education. The purpose of this paper is to understand the phenomenon of mathematics education as a whole.

  • In this paper, we present a review of research perspectives and investigations in collegiate mathematics education from the four decades of development in the journal published by Korea Society of Mathematical Education. Research of mathematics education at the tertiary level, which had been a minor area in mathematics education, has made a significant development in the last decade in Europe md U.S.A. In this context, international journals for research in mathematics education were selected to comparatively examine and identify research trends and tasks in collegiate mathematics education. Based on the analysis of domestic at international journals, we present recommendations for further the development of Korean collegiate mathematics education research. First it is necessary to diversify the topics of educational research. Korean research of mathematics education at the tertiary level has been limited to the issues of curriculum developments, teacher education and computer technology. It is necessary to pursue more various topics such as conceptual development mathematical attitude and belief gender, socio-cultural aspect of teaching and teaming mathematics. Second, it is necessary to apply research methods for systematic investigations. It is important to note that international research of mathematics education introduces variety of research methods such as observation, interview, and survey in order to develop grounded theory of mathematics education. We end with pedagogical implications of the analyses presented and general conclusions concerning the perspectives for the future in collegiate mathematics education.

  • In this study, we investigate integrated educations as an alternative educational method. I look around the developments of the integrated educations from MST education through STEAM education, especially in mathematics education. I analyzed integrated educations such as MST, STS, STEM, STEAM educations and compare them to each other, in mathematics education. And I discuss how to apply STEAM education to Korean mathematics education. I suggest a proper integrated education, in particular, STEAM education, as one that is suitable for Korean mathematics education.
