Maternal interactions during mother-child problem solving tasks were analyzed by marital satisfaction, parenting stress, and child attachment security. Forty 36-to 52-month-old children and their mothers were observed at home. Mothers' ratings of marital satisfaction and parenting stress were collected by questionnaires, and Attachment Q-set assessed child attachment security. Marital satisfaction and child attachment security were negative1y related to parenting stress. Marital satisfaction, parenting stress, and attachment security were related to maternal behaviors. The relations between child's attachment security and maternal behaviors were mediated by parenting stress. Stronger child attachment security was related to lower parenting stress, which in turn contributed to competent maternal behaviors during problem solving.
The purpose of this study was to examine effects of father involvement, marital happiness and conflicts, and meanings of parenthood on maternal parenting stress and compare the relative importance of those variables in three (low, middle, and upper) income groups. The subjects of this study were 654 nuclear families which consisted of 3 family members, couple and their infant children aged between 4 months and 10 months. Data was taken from the 2008 Panel Data of Korean Children. The results of this study were as follows : First, maternal parenting stress, father involvement, mother's marital satisfaction and conflicts were statistically significant according to income levels. Second, mother's marital satisfaction was the most significant variable in predicting father involvement, and mother's marital conflict was the most significant one in predicting maternal parenting stress. Third, the significance and numbers of variables which were impacted upon maternal parenting stress and father involvement varied according to income groups. Fourth, in all three income groups, the effects of father involvement on maternal parenting stress was not significant when marital relationship and meanings of parenthood underwent in regression analysis. However, father involvement was impacted upon maternal parenting stress by itself.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of maternal parenting stress and mother's ego-resilience on mother-child attachment. More specially, mother-child attachment for higher grade elementary school children was examined according to the internal working model. Methods: Participants were 190 mothers of fourth and fifth grade elementary school children. The Maternal Parenting Stress Scale(Shin, 1997), the Scales of Ego-resilience(Yoo & Shim, 2002), and Inventory of Parent Attachment(Yang, 2006) were used to measure variables. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results: The major findings were summarized as follows: First, there were no differences between mother-child attachment according to children's gender. Second, mother-child attachment was negatively correlated with maternal parenting stress and positively correlated with ego-resilience. Next, maternal parenting stress_interaction and ego-resilience explained mother-child attachment_trust. Last, maternal stress_interaction explained mother-child attachment_isolation. Conclusion/Implications: In conclusion, the study results showed that maternal parenting stress and ego-resilience influenced mother-child attachment. based on the results, the implications of this study were discussed.
Purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread widely throughout the world, causing psychological problems such as fear, anxiety, and stress. During the COVID-19 pandemic, pregnant women have been concerned about both their own health and the health of their fetuses, and these concerns could negatively affect maternal-fetal attachment. Thus, this study aimed to explore the level of COVID-19 stress, resilience, and maternal-fetal attachment among pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify factors influencing maternal-fetal attachment. Methods: In total, 118 pregnant women past 20 weeks gestation were recruited from two maternity clinics in Daegu, Korea, to participate in this descriptive correlational study during COVID-19. The factors influencing maternal-fetal attachment were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean scores for COVID-19 stress, resilience, and maternal-fetal attachment were 57.18±10.32 out of 84, 67.32±15.09 out of 100, and 77.23±9.00 out of 96, respectively. Nulliparous pregnant women reported greater maternal-fetal attachment than multiparous pregnant women (p=.003). Religious pregnant women also reported greater maternal-fetal attachment than non-religious pregnant women (p=.039). Resilience (β=.29, p=.002), COVID-19 stress (β=.20, p=.030) and parity (β=-.17, p=.047) were factors influencing maternal-fetal attachment, and these factors explained 26.4% of the variance in maternal-fetal attachment (F=10.12, p<.001). Conclusion: Converse to common sense, COVID-19 stress exerted a positive influence on maternal-fetal attachment in pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare providers need to recognize the positive influence of COVID-19 stress and implement intervention strategies to strengthen resilience in pregnant women to improve maternal-fetal attachment.
This study examined the influences on maternal acceptance-rejection and mediating effects of parenting stress. Participants were 150 mothers of children aged 3 to 6 in Seoul and Jeju. Research questions were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Results showed that children's age, congenital diseases or anomalies, planned pregnancy, and father's occupation influenced maternal acceptance-rejection directly. Mothers' perceived treatment in childhood and fathers' age influenced parenting stress; parenting stress, in turn, influenced maternal acceptance-rejection. Fathers' age influenced parenting stress negatively; parenting stress, in turn, influenced maternal acceptance-rejection positively.
Purpose: Prenatal depression is associated with potential negative consequences for the mother and infant. The purpose of this study was to examine pregnant women's stress, and depression and their impact on maternal-fetal attachment and fetal growth. Methods: Data were collected by means of a questionnaire and fetal sonogram from a convenience sample of 166 pregnant women. Results: Women who have a low educational level, poor health and are dissatisfied with their marriage showed low maternal-fetal attachment. Prenatal depression had significant correlations with length of pregnancy and level of stress. Even though correlation between maternal stress and fetal weight (r=-.15, p=.099) and correlation between maternal depression and maternal-fetal attachment (r=-.13, p=.095) were not statistically significant, the impact of the prenatal psychological state of mothers can not be ignored as it relates to fetal health. Conclusion: Maternal-fetal attachment and fetal growth can be affected by maternal emotional state, including stress or depression. These findings suggest that primary care nurses in hospitals and public health centers should provide prenatal depression screening and nursing intervention programs for management and prevention of prenatal stress and depression.
Objective: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of preschooler temperament and maternal postnatal depression, depression, and parenting stress on preschooler externalizing problem behavior. Methods: The participants consisted of 98 preschoolers (ages 4-5 years) and their mothers. The subjects completed the following questionnaires: Emotionality, Activity, and Sociability (EAS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Parenting Stress Scale, Korean Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1.5-5 (K-CBCL 1.5-5), and Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Inventory Short Form (SCBE-30). The data were analyzed by t/F tests, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results and Conclusion: First, preschooler emotionality temperament had positive correlations with attention problems and aggression. Second, maternal depression and parenting stress had a positive correlation with preschooler externalizing problem behaviors. Third, maternal parenting stress had an effect on preschooler attention problems. Forth, preschooler emotional temperament and maternal parenting stress had an effect on preschooler aggression.
The purposes of this study were twofold. Firstly, we sought to examine the effects of the severity of behavior problems of children with autism spectrum disorders and maternal stress coping styles on maternal parenting stress. Secondly, we investigated whether maternal stress coping styles moderate the relationship between the severity of children's behavior problems on parenting stress. The participants of this study comprised 106 mothers of children with ASD who were aged 6 to 18. In order to measure the research variables, the Parenting Stress Scale(Hwang, 2002), the Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18(Oh, Kim, Ha, Lee, & Hong, 2010), the Ways of Coping Checklist(Kim, 1987) were used. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results indicated that both the severity of externalizing behavior problems and the emotion-focused stress coping styles had significant and positive effects on parenting stress. Second, the stress coping styles had no moderating effect on the relationship between the severity of behavior problems(externalizing behavior problems, internalizing behavior problems) and maternal parenting stress.
The study investigated the interrelations between infant temperament, mothers' affective parenting, and maternal parenting stress. The study also studied the moderating effects of mothers' affective parenting between infant temperament and maternal parenting stress. Data on 1,863 mothers with children aged under 12 months from the 2008 Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed using PASW ver. 23.0 to carry out descriptive statistics, correlation co-efficiencies, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results show that infant temperament and mothers' affective parenting were significantly correlated with maternal parenting stress. The findings also prove the moderating effects of mothers' affective parenting on the relationship between infant emotionality, negative temperament, and maternal parenting stress.
The purpose of this research was to delineate the effect of maternal parenting stress and verbal abuse on emotional maladjustment behaviors in children. The sample consisted of 542 pairs of fifth/sixth graders and seventh/eighth graders, and their mothers. The major findings of the research were as follows: First, looking at the correlation between the mother's age/education level and the maternal parenting stress level, the maternal parenting stress level factor showed differences correlating to the mother's education level. Second, looking at the correlation between the mother's age/education level and the verbal abuse, the verbal abuse factor showed differences correlating to the mother's age/education level. Third, looking at the correlation between the maternal parenting stress level and the verbal abuse, the verbal abuse factor showed differences correlating to the maternal parenting stress level. Forth, the result of multiple regression analysis on the effects of the maternal parenting stress and verbal abuse on the children's emotional maladjustment behaviors indicated that verbal abuse was the significant contributing factor.
