  • Although Korea is a top market sharing and world leading producer and developer of flat panel display devices, relevant recycling technology is not up to her prestigious status. Besides, most of the waste glass arising from flat panel displays is currently land-filled. The present paper mainly reviews on development of recycling systems for waste TFT-LCD glass from end-of-life LCD TVs and monitors and TFT-LCD process waste of crushed glass particles with target end uses of raw material for high strength concrete pile and glass fibers, respectively. Waste LCD glass was recycled to fabricate ingredients for high strength concrete piles with enhanced physical properties and spherical foam products. The waste LCD glass recycling technology is already developed to fabricate long and short fibers at commercial level. In view of these, future R & D on waste LCD glass materials is to be directed toward implementation of commercial materials recycling system therefrom.

  • Recycling is receiving increasing social attention today as our nation begins to grapple with the significant problems caused by huge amount of municipal solid waste. The topic of recycling is not simple but extremely complicated. This study attempts to provide basic data and policy options for expanding and improving separated collection and recycling in public residential areas, through three case study of apartment housing areas in Taegu Metropolitan City. The main results of this study are summarized as follows. For the significant period of time, all three case areas had in common the extreme difficulty in establishing and operating the system of connecting public participation, collection and storage, transportation, and actual recycling of materials because of a variety of problems involved in this process. Both amounts of and prices for collected materials fluctuated considerably over time mainly due to monthly changes in recyclable home materials and the dynamic nature of recycling markets. Public questionnaire survey revealed the very high level of participation in separated collection, not only because almost all respondents well understood the necessity and importance of recycling, but because they also knew how to do separated collection. But overall activities were rated low and most respondents suggested the enlargement of public participation, the improvement of collection and storage facilities, and collection transportation networks. In particular, most respondents had little experience of using recycled Products and used mainly reproduced soap and bathroom tissue. Furthermore, they were considerably unsatisfied with low variety and quality of recycled products, their high prices and low availability in the market. Finally potential policy options and activities for improving separated collection and recycling are suggested.

  • There are several kinds of displays such as liquid crystal display (LCD), cathode ray tube (CRT), plasma display panel(PDP), light emitting diode (LED), organic light emitting diode (OLED), etc. Nowadays, recycling technologies of waste displays have been widely studied from economy and efficiency points of view. In this paper, patents and literature on the recycling technologies of the waste displays have been comprehensively analyzed. The search was limited to the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EU), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) and SCI journals published from 1980 to 2011. Patents and journals were systematically compiled and collected using key-words search and filtered by pre-set filtering criteria. The trends of the patents and journals were thus analyzed according to the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • 3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM), is being positioned as a new business model of revolutionizing paradigms of existing industries. Launched in early 2000, 3D printing technology for architecture has also advanced rapidly in association with machinery and electronics technologies mostly in the United States and Europe. However, 3D printing systems for architecture require different mechanical characteristics from those of cement/concrete raw materials used in existing construction methods. Accordingly, in order to increase utilization of raw materials produced in the cement and resource recycling industry, it is necessary to develop materials processing and utilization technology, to secure new property evaluation and testing methods, and to secure database related to environmental stability for a long period which aims to reflect characteristics of an architectural 3D printing technology.

  • Sustainable supply of minerals and energy is global problem. Metals and energy consumption in the world has increased with economic growth. Currently more than 40 metals are systematically extracted and used in many different fields in civilized society. Recycling and reuse have become very important because recycling contributes to supplying the materials and protecting the environment of society. It is not realistic that all waste materials are capable of being recycled, because recycling metals have fundamentally been competing with primary production. In this point of view, prior to discuss on current recycling technology of waste resources in Korea, world wide trend and Korean recent activity in the supply-demand far minerals and energy resources are reviewed.

  • This study, focused on reuse of the concepts of unused clothing recycling, was intended to provide basic materials and suggestions for establishing the drastic measures necessary for consumer education related to recycling by investigating how experiences in the recycling of unused clothes would show up according to environmental consciousness and recycling consciousness and then probing the scheme for the recycling of clothes. Since it was found that recycling consciousness was the variable that exerted a great effect on experiences in recycling unused clothes, consumer education about recycling will have to be revitalized. And detailed and specialized education on environmental consciousness is more important than emphasis on the importance of environmental consciousness.

  • Current, Registration fields of CDM projects are being conducted in a variety of parts such as mostly energy, chemical processing and manufacturing processes. However, there are not many CDM project registrations by recycling of inorganic waste. In this paper, analysis abroad CDM project and applications in order to review possibility of CDM project registration through the recycling of domestic inorganic waste were investigated. As a results, registered case of CDM project by inorganic waste recycling was researched to registrate in raw material alternative field of cement industry that inorganic waste can be used in large quantities. Application prospects of CDM project in Korea will be possible to analysis industrial scale, industry using inorganic raw materials, green house gas emissions and inorganic waste generated in large quantities.

  • In this study, a new process was developed to develop the waste rubber material recycling system. Firstly, the blending of the reclaimed rubber/virgin rubber as a compounding technology was investigated in this study. Secondly, the removal of odor by using zeolite. Thirdly, the continuous crosslinking process technology was studied the technology can solve the environmentally harmful substances and economic problems. Based on this technology, we have started to develop application technologies such as floor mats and rubber sheets for forklifts, and will further study the environmentally conscious products in various ways. Our research will contribute to the recycling industry.

  • Development of technology makes LED an economical option because of lower energy consumption and better environmental impact. Because higher consumer demand the LED market is expanding rapidly due to its environment-friendly advantages. Expansion of LED application, development of various fusion technologies, the emergence of new markets, and the large-scale expansion of markets would lead to a large volume of e-waste generation with valorization potential. Currently, most of the generated waste being that landfilled and incinerated due to the absence of technology and management system. In this paper, we review the current status of LED waste recycling and analyzes the available recycling technologies.

  • As construction and expansion of wastewater treatment works is continuing, generation of sludge is increasing. Bur most sludge is not used appropriately but disposed by landfill dumping to sea. Furthermore direct landfilling of sludge cake containing moisture content over 75% has been legally prohibited since 2001 that's enforcement will be more strict in 2003. Such a situation means nowadays recycling of organic waste such as sludge and food waste is necessary. Composting is one of recycling methods commonly and used as an effective means of stabilizing organic waste and then compost can be used as fertilizer. However fertilizer law management which include standard of compost products and other fertilizers applied all sludge products indiscriminiately and was not flexible. So MOE has graded organic composts according to land applications to improve recycle of organic wastes. The classified organic compost which contains low contaminants has been possible to use as various purpose. This study enalyzed 30 samples which were raw materials for compost and compost products management well and to estimate the quality of compost products. Heavy metals were measured in Raw materials and OM/N, NaCl and VS were tested in compost products as well as heavy metals. As a result, approximate 10% of raw materials was not suitable to the grade A and 6.7% over the grade B of the regulation on raw materials for compost. In the case of 30 produced compost propducts approximate, 57% of composts was not compatible with the grade A and B of the regulation on composting product. The qualities of compost products were worse than raw materials, because the compost products have more regulation item raw materials have.
