  • This work describes a method for determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models of metallic materials. The focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe based superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression test data at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of the model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process conditions were generated from the microstructural analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Also, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the average grain size data obtained from other compression tests of the Alloy 718 specimens with the initial grain size of $59.5{\mu}m$.

  • This work was focused on the material parameter extraction for the isothermal cyclic deformation analysis for which Chaboche(Combined Nonlinear Isotropic and Kinematic Hardening) and Overlay(Multi Linear Hardening) models are normally used. In this study all the parameters were driven especially based on Overlay theories. A simple method is suggested to find out best material parameters for the cyclic deformation analysis prior to the isothermal LCF(Low Cycle Fatigue) analysis. The parameter extraction was done using 400 series stainless steel data which were published in the reference papers. For simple and quick review of the parameters extracted by suggested method, 1D FORTRAN program was developed, and this program could reduce the time for checking the material data tremendously. For the application to FE code ABAQUS user subroutine for the material models was developed by means of UMAT(User Material Subroutine), and the stabilized hysteresis loops obtained by the numerical analysis were in good harmony with test results.

  • The powder blasting process has become an important machining technique for the cost effective fabrication of micro devices. This process is similar to sand blasting, and effectively removes hard and brittle materials. A large number of investigations on the abrasive jet machining with such output parameters as material removal rate, penetration and surface roughness have been carried out and reported by various authors. To achieve higher surface roughness, to increase material removal rate and to identify the influence of blasting parameters on the output parameters, we use the taguchi method which is one of the design methods of experiments. We can select process parameters to optimize the blasting process of glass. Experimental results indicate that the taguchi method is useful as a robust design methodology for the powder blasting process.

  • It is very important to investigate the behaviors of the material parameters governing PCI fuel failure during power ramp because PCI fuel failure is considered to be related to the operations limits of power reactors. In this study, the behavior characteristics of the material parameters such as hoop stress, hoop strain, ridge height, creep strain rate and strain energy in cladding were studied as a function of the operating parameters such as power shock and ramp rate. The FEMAXI-IV fuel rod performance analysis code was used for this study.

  • The changes of ablation characteristics with respect to laser parameters and material parameters during pulsed laser ablation of solids were discussed with experimental results. Although laser wavelength, laser pulse width, and laser pulse energy are the primary factors to be considered, it is shown that other parameters such as laser spot size and material properties also critically influence on the ablation results. It is further demonstrated that the microstructural characteristics of the target can lead to completely different ablation rate and surface morphology.

  • The objective of this research study is to investigate the optimal process parameters of electrical discharge machining (EDM) on SCM440 steel with copper as a tool electrode. The effect of various process parameters on machining performance is investigated in this study. Modern ED machinery is capable of machining geometrically complex or hard material components, that are precise and difficult-to-machine such as heat treated tool steels, composites, super alloys, ceramics, etc. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation by Taguchi method carried out to study the effects of machining parameters on material surface roughness in electric discharge machining of SCM440 steel. To predict the optimal condition, the experiments are conducted by using Taguchi's L27 orthogonal array. The work material was ED machined with copper electrodes by varying the pulsed current, pulse on-time, voltage, servo speed and spark speed. Investigations indicate that the surface roughness is strongly depend on pulsed current.

  • Traditional damage detection methods for nonlinear structures are often based on simplified models, such as the mass-spring-damper and shear-building models, which are insufficient for predicting the vibration responses of a real structure. Conventional global nonlinear finite element model updating methods are computationally intensive and time consuming. Thus, they cannot be applied to practical structures. A decentralized approach for identifying the nonlinear material parameters is proposed in this study. With this technique, a structure is divided into several small zones on the basis of its structural configuration. The unknown material parameters and measured vibration responses are then divided into several subsets accordingly. The structural parameters of each subset are then updated using the vibration responses of the subset with the Newton-successive-over-relaxation (SOR) method. A reinforced concrete and steel frame structure subjected to earthquake loading is used to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. The parameters in the material constitutive model, such as compressive strength, initial tangent stiffness and yielding stress, are identified accurately and efficiently compared with the global nonlinear model updating approach.

  • Safety monitoring systems of structures generally resort to detecting possible changes of dynamic system parameters. Sensitivity analysis of these dynamic system parameters may implement these techniques. Conventional structural eigenvalue problems are discussed in the scope of those systems with deterministic parameters. Large and flexible structures, such as suspension bridges, actually possess stochastic material properties and these random properties unavoidably affect the dynamic system parameters. The sensitivity matrix of structural modal parameters to basic design variables has been established in this paper. Moreover, second order statistics of natural frequencies due to the randomness of material properties have been discussed. It is concluded from numerical analysis of a modem suspension bridge that although the second order statistics of frequencies are small relatively to the change of basic design variables, such as density of mass and modulus of elasticity, the sensitivities of modal parameters to these variables at different locations change in magnitude.

  • In this paper, the extraction and optimization of SPICE parameters on SONOSFET for NVSM circuit design were discussed. SONOSFET devices with different channel widths and lengths were fabricated using conventional 1.2 um n-well CMOS process. And, electric properties for dc parameters and capacitance parameters were measured on wafer. SPICE parameters for the SONOSFET were extracted from the UC Berkeley level 3 model for the MOSFET. And, local optimization of Ids-Vgs curves has carried out in the bias region of subthreshold, linear, saturation respectively. Finally, the extracted SPICE parameters were optimized globally by comparing drain current (Ids), output conductance(gds), transconductance(gm) curves with theoretical curves in whole region of bias conditions. It is shown that the conventional model for the MOSFET can be applied to the SONOSFET modeling except sidewalk effect.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of macroscopic material parameters for natural stone and quarry masonry. To that end, a reliable non-linear material model on a meso-scale is developed to cover the random arrangement of stone blocks and quasi-brittle behaviour of both basic components, as well as the impaired cohesion and tensile strength on the interface between the blocks and mortar joints. The paper thus interrelates the following three problems: (i) definition of a suitable periodic unit cell (PUC) representing a particular masonry structure; (ii) derivation of material parameters of individual constituents either experimentally or running a mixed numerical-experimental problem; (iii) assessment of the macroscopic material parameters including the tensile and compressive strengths and fracture energy.
