Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and analyze the surgical techniques and postoperative complications in patients undergoing operations for descending thoracic aortic aneurysms. Material and Method: The data of 22 major operations between March 1987 and August 1997 were retrospectively reviewed. Result: There were 18 men and 4 women with a mean age of 49 years (range 33 years to 82 years). The cause of the aneurysm was aortic dissection in 13 patients, atherosclerosis in 3, mycotic in 3, trauma in 2 and uncertain in 1. The operative techniques were resection and graft replacement in 16, axillofemoral bypass graft in 2, femorofemoral bypass graft in 2, exclusion, aneurysmorrhaphy in 1 and transfemoral stent insertion in 1. During the operation, 16 cases were performed under total aortic clamp. Among the 16 patients, femorofemoral bypass was used in 14 cases and previously made shunt in 2 cases. The mean total aortic clamp time was 91 minutes and the mean extracorporeal circulation time was 116 minutes. One death occurred in an excluded patient on the 52 postoperative day due to a rupture of the aneurysm. Postoperative complications were paraplegia in 1 case, acute renal failure in 1 case and acute respiratory failure in 1 case. Conclusion: Although surgical treatment of the descending thoracic aneurysm has many postoperative complications, good surgical results can be achieved with a proper patient selection and fine surgical techniques.

This study was carried out to elucidate the relation between water quality and structure of the aquatic ecosystem in the agriculture reservoir Otae-ji from January to December in 2009. The proportion of forest was 46.98%, which means that non-point sources are major contributor of water pollution in this area. The annual mean COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) in Otae-ji was $3.6mgL^{-1}$, indicating, level II of environmental standards and the trophic state was mesotrophic. Although total phosporus concentration in the reservoir was high in August due to large inflow of nutrients from outside the reservoir during monsoon season, there was no break out of significant algal bloom in the summer. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton showed that the dinophyta dominated in the the spring, chlorophyta in the summer, chrysophyta and chlorophyta in the autumn and chrysophyta in the winter. In case of zooplankton, rotifers dominated in the most seasons, but cladoceran(Bosmina longirostris) dominated in June and copepod(Nauplii) in August. The macrophyte plants showed diverse species compositon consisted of 3 varieties, 24 species, 23 genera, 15 families and 14 orders. The macroinvertebrates also showed various FFG(Functional Feeding Groups) such as GC(Gathering-Collector), P(Predator), SH(Shedder), FC(Filter-Collector) and PP(Plant-Piercer). Ecosystem stability analysis using aquatic insects was classified as Group I, which has high resilience and resistance indices. A total of 14 species of fish was collected but exotic species such as Lepomis macrochirus and Micropterus salmoides were not found in Otae-ji. In conclusion, the preservation of healthy food wed in the reservoir ecosystem is closely related to water quality management as well as effective prevention of algal bloom by helping good material circulation in aquatic ecosystems.
A heart supplies blood of about 15, 000 liters to each human organ in a day. A normal function of heart valves is necessary to accomplish these enormous work of heart. The disease of heart valve develops to a narrowness of a closure, resulting in an abnormal circulation of blood. In an attempt to eliminate the affliction of heart valves, the operative method to replace with artificial heart valves has developed and saved numerous patients over past 30 years. This replacement operation has been performed since early 1960`s in Korea, but all the artificial heart valves used are imported from abroad with very high costs until recent years. New artificial heart valves have been developed in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology since early 1980`s. The first developed valve was designed with a free-floating pyrolytic carbon disk that is suspended in a titanium cage. The design of the valve was tested in vitro, and in animals in 1987. The results from this study was that the eccentrically placed struts creates a major and minor orifice when the disc opens and stagnation of flow in the area of the minor orifice has led to valve thrombosis. In this work, the design of the valve was changed from a single - leaflet valve to double - leaflet one in order to resolve the problems observed in the first - year tests. Morphological and hemodynamic studies were made for the newly designed valves through the in vitro and in vivo tests. The design and partial materials of the artificial heart valve was improved comparing with first - year`s model. The disc in the valve was modified from single - leaflet to bi - leaflet, and the material of the cage was changed from titanium metal to silicon - alloyed pyrolytic carbon. A test was made for the valve in order to examine its mechanical performance and stability. Morphological and hemodynamic studies were made for the valve that had been implanted in tricuspid position of mongrel dogs. All the test animals were observed just before the deaths. A new artificial heart valve was designed and fabricated in order to resolve the problems observed in the old model. The new valve was verified to have good stability and high resistance to wear through the performance tests. The hemodynamic properties of the valve after implantation were also estimated to be good in animal tests. Therefore, the results suggest that the newly designed valve in this work has a good quality in view of the biocompatibility. However, valve thrombosis on valve leaflets and annulus were found. This morphological findings were in accordance with results of surface polishing status studies, indicating that a technique of fine polishing of the surface is necessary to develop a valve with higher quality and performance.

Contaminants such as organic matters, nutrients and toxic chemicals in rivers and lakes with a weak flow rate are first removed from the water and accumulated in the sediments. Subsequently, they are released into the water column again, posing direct/indirect adverse effects on the water quality and aquatic ecosystems. In particular, phosphorus is known to accelerate the eutrophication phenomenon when it is released into the water column via physical disturbance and biological/chemical actions as one of important materials that determine the primary production of aquatic ecosystems and an element that is stored mainly in the sediments in the process of material circulation in the body of water. In this study, the effect on reducing phosphorus release in sediments was analyzed by applying different capping materials to lake water, where the effect of aquatic microorganisms is taken into account, and to distilled water, where the effect of microorganisms is excluded. The experimental results showed that capping with chemical materials such as Fe-gypsum and $SiO_2$-gypsum further reduced the phosphorus release by at least 40% compared to the control case. Composite materials like granule gypsum+Sand showed over 50% phosphorus release reduction effect. Therefore, it is determined that capping with chemical materials such as granule-gypsum and eco-friendly materials such as sand is effective in reducing phosphorus release. The changes in phosphorus properties in the sediments before and after capping treatment showed that gypsum input helped to change the phosphorus that is present in lake sediments into apatite-P, a stable form that makes phosphorus release difficult. Based on the above results, it is expected that the application of capping technology will contribute to improving the efficiency of reducing phosphorus release that occurs in river and lake sediments.

This study carried out current status, characteristics, and problems of coastal environment management on semi-enclosed Masan Bay in Korea and suggests cost-effective and eco-friendly water quality management policy. The pollutants from terrestrial sources into the Bay have apparently environmental pollution problems, such as eutrophication, red tide, and hypoxia. The carrying capacity of the Bay is estimated by hydrodynamic model and ecosystem model, material circulation including bivalve in ecosystem is analyzed by the growth model of bivalve. The resulting reduction in the input load was found to be 50~90%, which is unrealistic. When the efficiency of water quality improvement through bivalve farming was assessed based on the autochthonous COD, 30.7% of the total COD was allochthonous COD and 69.3% was autochthonous COD. The overall autochthonous COD reduction rate by bivalve aquaculture farm was found to be about 6.7%. This study indicate that bivalve farming is about 31% less expensive than advanced treatment facilities that remove both nitrogen and phosphorous.
We have discussed on the structural transition and its effect on the electrical property of Li-GFDICs and Li-PCDICs occuring during the deintercalation process of Li-Graphite Fiber Intercalation Compounds(Li-GFICs) and Li-Petroleum Cokes Intercalation Compounds(Li-PCDICs) synthesized under pressure and temperature by spontaneous oxidation by air circulation. The analytical results were obtained by X-ray diffraction and electrical specific resistivity measurements. According to X-ray analysis, we have found that the major stage of Li-GFICs was stage 2 and those of Li-PCICs were stage 1 and stage 2, respectively. And from this results of the deintercalation process, we have found that the deintercalation process did not occur any more after 5th week of Li-GFDICs and after 3rd week of Li-PCDICs. According to the results of the electrical specific resistivity measurements, Li-GFDICs showed little variation to 3rd week and rising in the steady curve after 4th week, while Li-PCDICs showed a rising in the steady curve to 3rd week and a declining curve after 3rd week. Therefore from these results, we can consider that graphite fiber and petroleum cokes as a substrate can be also used as an anode material of battery because they have good intercalation-deintercalation reactivity with lithium.
Feces contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate, potassium and research of the impact on the environment from feces is very diverse. However, despite the importance of mammals to environment, studies of mammals into the terrestrial ecosystems are rare. Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis) is an endemic species of Korea and China, and we conducted on factor of plant growth in relation to feces of Korean water deer depending on land use patterns. The analysis of growth, biomass and C/N ratio of Zea mays, amount of feces and land use patterns are strongly affecting the C/N ratio and growth of the Zea mays. The quantity of the feces also influences the growth of plants instead of the land use patterns. Furthermore, the feces of Korean water deer have a lower C/N ratio than that of other animals' feces. Being the process of composting, it is able to serve a suitable fertilizer for a crop growth. In this study, we investigated the impact of feces into the environment in the terrestrial ecosystems and we were able to provide the basic data to the resources of an efficient scheme of animal feces. Further research is needed to quantify the materials amongst the plant, soil and animal, and to understand the relationship ecosystem.
Various ecosystem carry out fundamental function of material circulation and energy flow through interrelationship with many environmental factors. Therefore, it is crucial to scientifically understand the value of nature to deduce correlation between environmental factor and change of ecosystem function. In this study, we determined the accumulated ecosystem carbon and characteristics of soil respiration on grassland vegetation in Namahangang basin in Namhangang Basin. It was found that the rate of soil respiration was highly correlated with the soil temperature in all communities. The measured soil respiration rates were $1,539mgCO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$, $1,200mgCO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$, $1,215mgCO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ in Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Phragmites japonica, Salix koreensis communities, respectively. Also, carbon quantities accumulated in litter and soil layers were $40.6tCha^{-1}$ (1.9+38.7), $46.9tCha^{-1}$ (43.0+3.9), $31.2tCha^{-1}$ (28.9+2.3) in M. sacchariflorus, P. japonica, S. koreensis communities, respectively.
"Information", which is circulated in society by information technology development represented by computer, has brought innovation not only to physical civilization, but also deep into our daily lives. This is to say that information has brought fundamental change to its form of existence, and value system through being faster regarding the circulation and the way of management being diverse. As time goes by, this kind of change would stimulate more changes to be made as the development of scientific civilization. Therefore, informatization is one of the important characteristic that defines modern society's essence, but on the other side, information has been taken advantage of that temperament and abused in a lot of different ways. "The Law Regarding Computer Network Diffusion Expansion and Usage Promotion"(1986), as a counterplan of informatization is our nation's first Act about informatization, which enacts national policy and system about this issue. Since then, many laws has been enacted down to "Private Information Protection Act"(2011), forming a comprehensive system. The basic background of these laws are based upon the premise that even if the place where the information is managed is virtual space, rules that are considered valid in the real world should be basically applied in the virtual space. Therefore, the violation of the law in the real world is also considered the violation in the virtual space. This direction of current law regarding information is shared with both the theories and the reality. However, current law system and notion are based upon the premise that the law regards material objects, thus the characteristic of the information, which is "Immaterial Being" is not reflected. Also, the management and approach to this issue is allopathic, exposing many problems. Thus, this paper examines the way of protecting information stipulated in the current law, contemplates its protection scope and limitation, and seeks the direction of the improvement, based on the critical mind explained above.
