  • Soil and water contamination caused by the abundant use of agricultural chemicals including herbicides and fertilizers draws public concerns since these chemicals may pollute the agricultural lands as well as the food products grown on these lands. As a method to reduce the use of agricultural chemicals mulching with thin plastic film has been commonly practised for many years. Although use of the plastic film for mulching is very effective in preventing the growth of weed, it is almost impossible to remove all of the plastic film from the agricultural land and the remaining film eventually contaminates the soils. Therefore, it is very imperative to develop a mulching material that decomposes completely to prevent soil pollution problems and to enhance the competitive edge of domestic agriculture. Mulch papers are believed to have many positive characteristics in preventing problems caused by the plastic mulch film since it decomposes completely after use. However, the basis weight of mulch papers needs to be reduced to improve its handling properties and to reduce the raw material costs of pulps. In this paper the possibilities of using domestic old corrugated containers in producing mulch papers were examined. Also use of unbleached softwood kraft pulps and dry strength additives were exploited along with two-layered sheet forming technology in decreasing the basis weight of the mulch paper. Results showed that reduction of 20g/$m^2$ of basis weight of mulch paper was possible by the appropriate raw material selection and application of strength resin. To use the mulch papers in paddy fields, however, further research to improve its durability should be pursued.

  • An investigation is made in the present work on the post-buckling and geometrically nonlinear behaviors of moderately thick perfect and imperfect rectangular plates made-up of functionally graded materials. Spectral collocation approach based on Legendre basis functions is developed to analyze the functionally graded plates while they are subjected to end-shortening strain. The material properties in this study are varied through the thickness according to the simple power law distribution. The fundamental equations for moderately thick rectangular plates are derived using first order shear deformation plate theory and taking into account both geometric nonlinearity and initial geometric imperfections. In the current study, the domain of interest is discretized with Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto nodes. The equilibrium equations will be obtained by discretizing the Von-Karman's equilibrium equations and also boundary conditions with finite Legendre basis functions that are substituted into the displacement fields. Due to effect of geometric nonlinearity, the final set of equilibrium equations is nonlinear and therefore the quadratic extrapolation technique is used to solve them. Since the number of equations in this approach will always be more than the number of unknown coefficients, the least squares technique will be used. Finally, the effects of boundary conditions, initial geometric imperfection and material properties are investigated and discussed to demonstrate the validity and capability of proposed method.

  • By the recently, Environmental pollution is serious by the highly economic growth and expansion of lively country basic industry. Especially, in case of industrial waste and life waste leaped into a pollution source. Also, research for processing of waste and recycling countermeasure is a pressing question on national dimension because it is prohibited an ocean disposal and reclamation. In this study, it looked for fracture characteristic value of recycling a coal ash to decrease environmental pollution by picky and exhaustion of natural resources and to reduce self-weight to prepare for a tall building and earthquake. So a coal ash examined to be possible to do as construction material. It achieved compressive strength test and three points bending test with initial notch depth rate and age for variables to show a basic research data. From the basis of the three points bending test, the fracture parameters - notch sensitivity, fracture energy, initial compliance were experimentally proposed. From the results of the compressive strength test, the elastic modulus was experimentally proposed. Also on the basis of the three points bending test, the fracture parameters - notch sensitivity, fracture energy, initial compliance were experimentally proposed. The results that the strength and fracture energy value are lower than concrete or mortar is described in this paper. Also, it shows that the deflection at fracture decreases as the age increases and the notch sensitivity decrease. However, it is judged to be available to construction material if research is continuously gone forward.

  • The object of this paper is to acquire the data related to insulation evaluation of hybrid vehicle traction motors. We made a comparative analysis on Insulation Resistance (IR), Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR), and Polarization Index (PI) of the motor stators. The experiment was carried out according to IEEE Std. 43 and IEC 60085-1 for insulation resistance test standard of rotating machinery. Test voltage of 500 V was applied between a phase and the enclosure. The IR and the DAR of used motors were lower than those of new ones. The DAR and the PI were $0.92{\sim}1.02$ and $0.74{\sim}1.1$, respectively and the result did not meet the recommendation basis 2 for insulation level H. From the experimental results, we could prepare parameters and basis for insulation evaluation of the traction motor stator by the comparative analysis of short-time insulation resistance changes, DAR and PI.

  • The three-dimensional Stokes flow within a staggered screw channel is obtained by using a finite volume method. The geometry is intended to mimic the single screw extruder having staggered arrangement of flights. The flow solution is then subjected to the analysis of the stirring performance. In the analysis of the stirring performance, the stretching-mapping method developed by the author is employed for calculating the materials' stretching exponents, which are to be used in quantification of the mixing effect. The numerical results Indicate that the staggered geometry gives indeed far much better stirring-performance than the standard (nonstaggered) flight geometry. It was also shown that care must be given to the selection of the basis planes for evaluating the local stretching rate, and it turns out that the best method (H-method) has its basis plane just on the half way between the past and future evolution of fluid particles subjected to the defromation. In evaluating the stretching exponent, the expansion ratio must be considered which is one of the characteristic differences of the actual three-dimensional flows from the two-dimensionmal counterparts. The larger axial pressure-difference causes in general the smaller stirring performance while the flow rate is increased. The smaller channel length also increases the stirring performance.

  • A code developed using the flux-difference splitting scheme on the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate three-dimensional internal waves. The material interface is regarded as a moving contact discontinuity and is captured on the basis of mass conservation without any additional treatment across the interface. Inviscid fluxes are estimated using the flux-difference splitting scheme for incompressible fluids of different density. The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is used to enforce the boundary condition for a moving three-dimensional body. Immersed boundary nodes are identified within an instantaneous fluid domain on the basis of edges crossing a boundary. The dependent variables are reconstructed at the immersed boundary nodes along local normal lines to provide the boundary condition for a discretized flow problem. The internal waves are simulated, which are generated by an pitching ellipsoid near an material interface. The effects of density ratio and location of the ellipsoid on internal waves are compared.

  • In recent years, attention has been paid to the integrity of steam generator (SG) tubes due to severe accident and beyond design basis accident conditions. In these transient conditions, steam generator tubes may be damaged by high temperature and pressure, which might result in a risk of fission products being released to the environment due to the failure. Alloy 690 which has increased the Cr content has been replaced for the SG tube due to its high corrosion resistance against stress corrosion cracking (SCC). However, there is lack of research on the high temperature creep rupture and life prediction model of Alloy 690. In this study, creep test was performed to estimate the high temperature creep rupture life of Alloy 690 using tube specimens. Based on manufacturer's creep data and creep test results performed in this study, creep life prediction was carried out using the Larson-Miller (LM) Parameter, Orr-Sherby-Dorn (OSD) parameter, Manson-Haford (MH) parameter, and Wilshire's approach. And a hyperbolic sine (sinh) function to determine master curves in LM, OSD and MH parameter methods was used for improving the creep life estimation of Alloy 690 material.

  • The top-to-bottom compression strength of corrugated board box is the most important mode of loading during it's no, and it depends largely on the edgewise compression strength of the corrugated board in the cross-machine direction and to a considerable extent on the flexural stiffness in both principal directions (CD; cross-machine direction, MD; machine direction) of the corrugated board. Corrugated board is a sandwich structure with an orthotropic property. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the principal design parameters for board combination of corrugated board from the viewpoint of bending strength through the finite element analysis [FEA] fur the various corrugated board. In general, the flexural stiffness [FS] in the MD was 2-3 times larger than that in the CD, and the effect of liner for the FS of corrugated board was much bigger than that of corrugating medium. The flexural stiffness index [FSI] was high when the stiffness of liner was in the order of inner, outer, and middle liner in double-wall corrugated board [DW], and the effect of the stiffness arrangement or itself reinforcement of corrugating medium on the FSI was not high. In single-wall corrugated board [SW] with DW. the variation of FSI with itself stiffness reinforcement of liner was much bigger than that with stiffness arrangement of liner. The highest FSI was at the ratio of about 2:1:2 for basis weight distribution of outer, middle, and inner liner if the stiffness of liner and total basis weight of corrugated board were equal in DW Secondarily. basis weight was in the order of inner, outer, and middle liner. However, the variation of FSI with basis weight distribution between liner and corrugating medium was much bigger than that with itself basis weight distribution ratio of liner and corrugating medium respectively in both DW and SW. md the FSI was high as more total basis weight was divided into liner. These phenomena fur board combination of corrugated board based on the FEA were well verified by experimental investigation.

  • In paper the evenness of planar distribution of mass in a small scale is called formation (orbetter:mass formation). Traditionally formation has been assessed visually, by looking the sheet of paper against transmitted light. Different kinds of optieal testers are being usd to obtain quantitative rankings htat would be independent of the observer but would well correspond to the visual assessment. However, various raw-material and process factors do influence light trans-mittance in paper and do impair the correspondence between basis weight and the optical formation measurement (or visual assessment). As the optical formation test methods do not incorporate an efficient calib ration routine, the formation of the sophisticated paper grades of today the is rather difficult to measure optically and may lead to erroneous results. It may be concluded that the optical measurement is not suitable for paper grades with high filler content. coating, heavy calendering or that are made of heavily beaten pulp, nordoes it apply for dyed or printed papers. For this reason, visual assessment and optical evaluation shoild be replaced with a measurement that gives reliable results independent on paper grode and manufacturing process. Formation measuremend based on beta radiation is suitable for all paper grades regardless to the material contents or process treatment. It is possible to measure even dyed or printed samples. Thonks to a sim ple and relioble calibration, the results are converted to real basis weight balues that remain reliable even with time. The only beta tester commercially available is the AMBERTEC Beta Formation Tester. Formation of paper does vary locally in the web. Typically there exists a formation profile, too similarly to other properties of paper. Therefore, formation should ? ays be expressed as a mean of a sufficient amount of parallel determinations. All formation measurements should be calibrated against basis weight.

  • Experiments of Cone calorimeter test and Lift spread flame apparatus test are carried out in order to appraise fire hazard in color nonwoven used mostly on the spot in construction works. As the result, in color nonwoven combustibility is discovered not firing flame in surface, but firing under state of combustible gas occuring in the state of melting. In the case of Lift spread flame apparatus test, color nonwoven is very brittle which almost no flame spread owing to contracting and break by firing strength. The following data are agree with basis: total heat release is 2.66 MJ/$m^2$, limited combustible material (10 min) of incombustible rating appraisal in interior material of building, and incombustible materials (5 min) 8 MJ/$m^2$ in spite of the above data mentioned, those data are only as basis of interior finish, and so I cannot judge color nonwoven have incombustible rating retain through the above data. Accordingly, the basis of incombustible rating and experiment method about exterior finish must be arranged also.
