Structural optimization is widely adopted in the design of structures with the development of computer aided design and computer technique recently. By applying the structural optimization in the last decades, designers have gained the design scheme of structures more feasibly and easily. In this paper, an optimal design of one 30-story high rise steel structure is performed considering material non-linearity. Based on finite element analysis and adaptive simulated annealing algorithm, the optimal weight of structure is derived under constraints of allowable yield stress, shear stress and serviceability.

The spnng back phenomena occurring in the coiling process of a steam generator tube induces the dimensional inaccuracy and makes the coiling procedure difficult. In this research, an analytical model was developed to evaluate the amount of the spring back for SMART steam generator tubes. The model was developed on the basis of beam theory and elastic-perfectly plastic material property. This model was extended to consider the effect of plastic hardening and the effect of the tensile force on the spring back phenomena. Parametric studies were performed for various design variables of steam generator tubes in order to minimize the spring back in the design stage. A sensitivity analysis has shown that the low yield strength, the high elastic modulus, the small helix diameter, and the large tube diameter result in a small amount of the spring back. The amount of the spring back can be controlled by the selection of adequate design values in the basic design stage and reduced to an allowable limit by the application of the tensile force to the tube during the coiling process.rocess.

Design of general steel structure had applied to achieve elastic designing concept so far. Because elastic design supposes that whole structure complies with elasticity formula so that achieve via allowable stress of material. It is concept that calculate stress distribution of construction about action external load and estimate load when the maximum stress reaches equally with allowable stress that is established by maximum safety load of the structure. But, absence that compose actuality structure by deal with external load increase small success surrender and structure hardness falls and structure in limited state finally on the whole as showing complicated process by interference between collapse and buckling under compression. Applied ANSYS (elasto-plasticity large deformation finite element method) to be mediocrity finite element program for analysis method and analysis control used in Newton-Raphson method & Arc-length method.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of bearing capacity of pre-bored super strength PHC (SSPHC) piles socketed in rocks based on dynamic load test results. Because the SSPHC piles have high compressive concrete strengths compared with those of regular high strength PHC piles, the allowable structural strengths of the SSPHC piles were increased. For optimal design of the super strength PHC piles, the geotechnical bearing capacity of the SSPHC piles should also increased to balance the increased allowable structural strength of the SSPHC piles. Current practices of pile installation apply the same amount of driving energy on both SSPHC and high strength PHC piles. As results of analyzing factors that influence bearing strength of SSPHC piles using dynamic load test, there was no relationship between SPT-N value at pile toe and end bearing capacity. But driving energy effects on end bearing capacity. In case of skin friction, driving energy had no effects. And reasonable method verifying design bearing strength is necessary because end bearing capacity is not considered sufficiently in restrike test results.

In order to expand facility agriculture and reduce greenhouse construction costs in reclaimed land, a greenhouse foundation method that satisfies economic feasibility and structural safety at the same time is required. As an alternative, the allowable bearing capacity and settlement were reviewed when the DCM(Deep cement mixing) method was applied among the soft ground reinforcement methods. To examine the applicability of the greenhouse foundation, the allowable bearing capacity and settlement were calculated by applying the theory of Terzaghi, Meyerhof, Hansen, and Schmertmann. In case of the diameter of 800mm and the width and length of the foundation of 4m, the allowable bearing capacity was 179kN/m2 and the settlement was 7.25mm, which satisfies the required bearing capacity and settlement standards. The calculation results were verified through FEM(Finite element method) analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb material model. The allowable bearing capacity was 169kN/m2 and the settlement was 2.52mm. The bearing capacity showed an error of 5.6% compared to calculated value, and the settlement showed and error of 65.4%. Through theoretical calculations and FEM analysis, it was confirmed that the allowable bearing capacity and settlement satisfies the design criteria as a greenhouse foundation when the width and length of the foundation were 4m. Based on the verified design values, it is expected to be able to present the foundation design criteria for greenhouses through empirical tests such as bearing capacity tests and long-term settlement monitoring.

In this study preliminary structural design has been performed to develop an all composite wing box for experimental aircraft(classified in FAR Part 21). Considerations on composite materials and their manufacturing process were taken into account throughout the design phase. Aerodynamic loads were estimated by using Shrenk method(NACA TM No 948) and FAR Part 23 Appendix A. The structural layout has been determined to carry effectively the critical loads and to maximize the benefit of composite structure. Maximum strain failure allowable and first ply failure criteria were applied for the sizing of major structural members. Finally, the designed composite wing box structure is presented in the form of drawings, which include material specifications, stacking sequences and joint design.
In the coiling process of helical steam generator tubes of integral reactor SMART, a considerable amount of spring back, which induces dimensional inaccuracy and difficulty in fabrication, has been arised. Recently, the space truss has been attracted by many designers because of their ability to support significant loads with a minimum material. And it is relatively flexible to design the configuration of structures. This paper presents a volume optimization for the space truss on the basis of result evaluated from nonlinear analysis. The optimization of the truss is done by nonlinear optimum GINO(General Interactive Nonlinear Optimizer) program. The objective function considered is the volume of the steel bars. The constraints for optimum design are the design limits, such as the axial force strength, maximum slenderness, minimum thickness, allowable deflection and ratio of the external diameter to thickness of the circular tube bars.

In this paper, mechanical behaviors of developed pedicle screw system, made of bio-mechanical materials(Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5), ale predicted using FEM analysis. As a first step, morphologic construction of normal Korean spines and surgical operation convenience are considered to design optimum pedicle screw system. In this step, various design variables are considered as design parameters to develop optimized models. As a next step, tension and bending tests are performed to improve the structural performance of the developed system using finite element method. In this step, required Static compression and bending test specifications by ASTM F-04 25 04 01 are applied to understand the bio-mechanical behaviors of the designed spinal implant system under various load types. As the results of this research, it is possible to develop efficient pedicle screw system, having enough rigidity and fixation to stand any spinal damage under allowable stress conditions.
Polyester woven geotextiles to be bonded with nonwovens were manufactured for reinforcement and the allowable strength of these were obtained by the results of creep tests. Long-term design strength were calculated in consideration with factors of safety for design and construction and the long-term behaviors of geogrids were compared to those of composite woven geotextiles to examine the reinforcement function. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that these woven composite geotextiles could have the sufficient performance as an alternative geosynthetics instead of geogrids and the further study will be continue to confirm the possibility of woven composite geotextiles as the excellent reinforcing material.
