The purpose of this study was to investigate the specificity of the effort of massage on hamstring muscles extensibility a9 measured by fingertip to floor test. The participant were healthy young men(n=25). Manual massage was applied to the posterior aspects of the both thigh (hamsting portion) during 20 mins. We measured four times ; that is, after rest 20 mins-before massage, immediately after massage, immediately after massage and 20 mins. after massage. As the middle fingers are reaching beyond the floor level, the level was considered as ( + ) level. And the middle fingers did not touch the 리oor, the level was considered as ( - ) level. Results were as fellows : 1) There was significant difference between group 1 and group 2(P<0.05), 2) There was no significant difference between group 2 and group 3(P>0.05). 3) There was no significant difference between group 3 and group 4(P>0.05). Therefore, the extensibility of hamstring muscles was increased after massage more than rest during 20 mins, before massage, and the effects of massage application were prolonged during 20 mins, after massage.
This quasi-experimental study was to explore the effects of back massage with Lavender essence oil on the stress response of the ICU nurses. Method: Twenty nurses were selected as an experimental group and twenty nurses were in the control group. Lavender essence oil mixed with Jojova carrier oil was used to massage the neck, shoulder, back, and low back. Massage was done three times a week for 20 minutes for 2 weeks by the massage therapist. The stress response was measured with a subjective stress score, Cortisol and IgA level in saliva. The cortisol level in saliva was analyzed by an radioimmunoassay before and after back massage. The level of IgA in saliva was analyzed by an immunoturbidimeter assay and subjective stress scores was measured by Visual Analogue Scale. The data was analyzed using SPSS 8.0 and the hypotheses were tested by ANCOVA and the Pearson coefficient correlation. Result: 1) Score of subjective stress decreased significantly after the use of back massage with Lavender essence oil. 2) Level of Cortisol in saliva did not change significantly after the use of back massage with Lavender essence oil. 3) Level of IgA in saliva increased significantly after the use of back massage with Lavender essence oil. 4) After the use of back massage with Lavender essence oil, there was significant negative correlation between subjective stress and level of IgA in saliva. Conclusion: Back massage with Lavender essence oil is an effective intervention to reduce the stress response in the ICU nurses.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of foot massage on anxiety response in preoperative patients undergoing total hysterectomy. Among the fifty patients, twenty-five were the experimental group receiving foot massage for 10-minutes and twenty-five were the control group. Subjects were admitted to a hospital in Inchon city for total hysterectomy. This study was carried out from July 10th, to September 18th, 2000. The levels of anxiety were measured by the Visual Aanalogue Scale(VAS). State Anxiety Scale, blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate. Data were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test, unpaired t-test and ANCOVA with SPSS/pc program. The results were summarized as followings: 1. After foot massage, VAS anxiety level, state anxiety level, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate of the experimental group were decreased significantly than those measurements before the foot massage. 2. After foot massage, significant differences in the VAS anxiety level, state anxiety level, systolic blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate between the experimental and control groups were found. In conclusion, foot massage for 10 minutes is a useful nursing intervention that decreases anxiety in preoperative patients undergoing total hysterectomy.
Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of back massage on the anxiety state, cortisol level, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and sleep quality in family caregivers of patients with cancer. Materials and Methods: Forty-four family caregivers were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group (22 interventions, 22 controls) after they were matched on age and gender. The intervention consisted of back massage for 15 minutes per day for a week. Main research outcomes were measured at baseline (day I) and follow-up (day 7). Unpaired t-test, paired t test and chi-square test were used to analyse data. Results: The majority of the caregivers were women, married, secondary school educated and housewife. State anxiety (p<0.001), cortisol level (p<0.05), systolic/diastolic blood pressure (p<0.001, p<0.01 respectively), and pulse rate (p<0.01) were significantly decreased, and sleep quality (p<0.001) increased after back massage intervention. Conclusions: The study results show that family caregivers for patients with cancer can benefit from back massage to improve state anxiety, cortisol level, blood pressure and heart rate, and sleep quality. Oncology nurses can take advantage of back massage, which is non-pharmacologic and easily implemented method, as an independent nursing action to support caregivers for patients with cancer.
The purpose of this study is the effect of massage therapy on the human autonomic nerve system by heart rate variability spectral analysis. This study were to effect autonomic nerve system before and after massage therapy in 12 health peoples. The effect of massage therapy were assessments through Heart Rate Variability (HRV; SA-2000E, Medicare, Korea) before and after the massage therapy by same massage therapist. Statistical techniques for data analysis were applied paired t-test. The 0.05 level of significance was used as the critical level for rejection of the null hypotheses for the study. On the basis of the results analyzed in this study, conclusions were drawn as follows; Rest Heart Rate was significantly decreased before and after massage therapy, but other variable were no statistical significances. These results suggest that massage therapy maybe be effective in reducing heart rate and activity in valgal tone.
Purpose: To investigate changes in mother's stress, degree of depression and level of milk secretion hormones when the mothers provided massage to their new born babies. Method: The study was conducted with 65 women who had delivered at a convalescence institute in Incheon between Sep 25, 2003 and Feb 10, 2004. The mothers were assigned to a control group or an experimental group. Infants of mothers in the experimental group received massage from their mothers twice a day for 10 days beginning on the 4th day after delivery. The data were processed using $x^2-test$, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA using the SAS program. Results: The level of cortisol, a stress hormone and depression were significantly different between the two groups (p=0.01 ;p=0.02). While fur plasma prolactin level, a milk secretion hormone, there was no significant difference(p=0.14). Conclusions: When massage was provided to new-born babies the cortisol level of the mothers decreased significantly compared to the control group which did not receive the massage. As the level of depression of the control group declined as time passed while the experiment group showed no difference and there was no difference in the plasma prolactin level, further study is suggested.
The purpose of this study was to exame the effectiveness of the hand massage as an independent nursing intervention for the cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. The data were collected with quasiexperimental research design from 40 subjects-20 for experimental group and 20 for control group-of the radiation oncology department of one university hospital in Seoul from January 10th to March 29th, 1994. Subjects agreed to participate in this study and ranged in age from 18 to 82 years with mean age of 52.63. They had insight of their disease and had undergone radiotherapy at least twice. The hand massage developed by Mariah Snyder (1993) based on the Swedish Massage was administered to the experimental group prior to having radiation therapy at the waiting place of radiotherapy room. Hand massage was given to each hand of patient for five minutes once a day. Measurement of the patient's blood pressure, pulse rate, state anxiety and mood were done before and after the administration of hand massage for 5 days. The data were analyzed with paired t-test, t-test an4 the results were summarized as follows ; 1. After administration of the hand massage, the diastolic blood pressure of experimental group was decreased significantly, while the systolic blood pressure and the pulse rate were decreased, but not significantaly. 2. In the experimental group, the level of anxiety was significantaly lower than control group. The mean scores of the difference of the anxiety level after having hand massage was 8.60 in the experimental group and 0.75 in the control group. 3. The difference of the mood scores before and after the massage in the experimental group was decreased significantly. The mean mood score was decreased 4.80 in the experimental group as compared with 2.02 in the control group. 4. The patients after having the hand massage expressed subjectively their feeling of relaxation, well - being and being enjoyable, the significant decreased of physical symptoms and anxiety. The findings summarized that the use of the hand massage for the cancer patient undergoing radiation therapy Produced significant changes in the level of anxiety and relaxation. Therefore it is recommended to use the hand massage as an intervention for the patients.
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to explore the effect of aromatherapy massage on the mood, the milk ejection reflex, and the immunoglobulin A of the breast milk of mothers who gave birth through a Cesarean section delivery. Twenty mothers who had Cesarean section were selected as an experimental group, and twenty-two were in the control group. Lavander and Rosemary oil mixed with Jojova carrier oil was used to massage the back, both axillar and breasts. Aromatherapy massage was done once a day for 20 minutes by the researcher. Each session consisted of 4 minutes for warm-up, 14 minutes for massage and 2 minutes for closure. The levels of IgA within the breast milk was analyzed by an immunoturbidimeter assay (Cobas INTEGRA, Roche, Swiss) before and after aromatherapy massage. Mood and milk ejection reflex were measured by self-reports at the same time. The data were analyzed using SPSS 7.5 and the hypotheses were tested by ANCOVA and the Pearson coefficient correlation. The results were as follows : 1) Score of mood increased significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage. 2) Score of milk ejection reflex increased significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage. 3) Level of IgA of breast milk did not change significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage.4) After the use of aromatherapy massage, there wasn't any correlation among mood, milk ejection reflex, and level of IgA of breast milk. In conclusion, the results suggest that aromatherapy massage is an effective nursing intervention to enhance the mood and the milk ejection reflex and to increase the rate of breastfeeding in the breastfeeding mothers under stresses like a Cesarean section.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of a postpartum massage program on stress response in the Cesarean section mothers. The study focused on evaluating the effect of postpartum massage program on mood, anxiety, skin temperature and concentration of saliva and breast milk immunoglobulin A in the Cesarean section mothers. This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study. Twenty-eight Cesarean section mothers were selected as experimental group, whereas twenty- seven were control group. The postpartum massage program consisted of 20 minutes of warm-up, massage and ending phases and used once a day. During each program, there were 4 minutes of warm-up, 14 minutes of massage on back, axillary and breasts, and 2 minutes of ending. Massage were used for the experimental group by the same investigator 20 times per minute. The massage technique used were efflurage, petrissage, accupressure, kneading and vibration. Skin temperature was monitored with YSI Tele-thermometer(Simpson electric Co., USA) before and after massage program. The concentration of immunoglobulin A in saliva and breast milk was analyzed by immunoturbididimeter assay(Cobas INTEGRA, Swiss) before and after massage program. Also at this time mood and anxiety were measured by self-report. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 7.5 and hypothesis was tested with ANCOVA analysis and Pearson coefficient correlation. The results were as follows : 1) Score of mood increased significantly after use of postpartum massage program. 2) Level of anxiety decreased significantly after use of postpartum massage program. 3) Skin temperature increased significantly after use of postpartum massage program. 4) Concentration of saliva immunoglobulin A increased significantly after use of postpartum massage program. 5) Concentration of breast milk immunoglobulin A did not change significantly after use of postpartum massage program. 6) After use of postpartum massage program, there was significant correlation between psychological stress response and physiological stress response. The results suggest that postpartum massage program can be effective nursing intervention to reduce stress response in the postpartum mothers under stress.
