In this paper, assuming that the score of speech utterance is the product of HMM log likelihood and HMM weight, we propose a new method that HMM weights are adapted iteratively like the general MCE training. The proposed method adjusts HMM weights for better performance using delta coefficient defined in terms of misclassification measure. Therefore, the parameter estimation and the Viterbi algorithms of conventional 1:.um can be easily applied to the proposed model by constraining the sum of HMM weights to the number of HMMs in an HMM set. Comparing with the general segmental MCE training approach, computing time decreases by reducing the number of parameters to estimate and avoiding gradient calculation through the optimal state sequence. To evaluate the performance of HMM-based speech recognizer by weighting HMM likelihood, we perform Korean isolated digit recognition experiments. The experimental results show better performance than the MCE algorithm with state weighting.

The HMM-Net is a neural network architecture that implements the computation of output probabilities of a hidden Markov model (HMM). The architecture is developed for the purpose of combining the discriminant power of neural networks with the time-domain modeling capability of HMMs. Criteria of maximum likehood(ML) and minimization of mean squared error(MMSE) are used for learning HMM-Net classifiers. The criterion MMSE is better than ML when initial learning condition is well established. However Ml is more useful one when the condition is incomplete[3]. Therefore we propose an efficient learning method of HMM-Net classifiers using a hybrid criterion(ML/MMSE). In the method, we begin a learning with ML in order to get a stable start-point. After then, we continue the learning with MMSE to search an optimal or near-optimal solution. Experimental results for the isolated numeric digits from /0/ to /9/, a training and testing time-series pattern set, show that the performance of the proposed method is better than the others in the respects of learning and recognition rates.

Background: With recent progress in health science administration, a huge amount of data has been collected from thousands of subjects. Statistical and computational techniques are very necessary to understand such data and to make valid scientific conclusions. The purpose of this paper was to develop a statistical probability model and to predict future survival times for male breast cancer patients who were diagnosed in the USA during 1973-2009. Materials and Methods: A random sample of 500 male patients was selected from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. The survival times for the male patients were used to derive the statistical probability model. To measure the goodness of fit tests, the model building criterions: Akaike Information Criteria (AIC), Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC), and Deviance Information Criteria (DIC) were employed. A novel Bayesian method was used to derive the posterior density function for the parameters and the predictive inference for future survival times from the exponentiated Weibull model, assuming that the observed breast cancer survival data follow such type of model. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method was used to determine the inference for the parameters. Results: The summary results of certain demographic and socio-economic variables are reported. It was found that the exponentiated Weibull model fits the male survival data. Statistical inferences of the posterior parameters are presented. Mean predictive survival times, 95% predictive intervals, predictive skewness and kurtosis were obtained. Conclusions: The findings will hopefully be useful in treatment planning, healthcare resource allocation, and may motivate future research on breast cancer related survival issues.

Body gesture Recognition has been one of the interested research field for Human-Robot Interaction(HRI). Most of the conventional body gesture recognition algorithms used Hidden Markov Model(HMM) for modeling gestures which have spatio-temporal variabilities. However, HMM-based algorithms have difficulties excluding meaningless gestures. Besides, it is necessary for conventional body gesture recognition algorithms to perform gesture segmentation first, then sends the extracted gesture to the HMM for gesture recognition. This separated system causes time delay between two continuing gestures to be recognized, and it makes the system inappropriate for continuous gesture recognition. To overcome these two limitations, this paper suggests primitive body model encoding, which performs spatio/temporal quantization of motions from human body model and encodes them into predefined primitive codes for each link of a body model, and Selective/Asynchronous Input-Parallel State machine(SAI-PSM) for multiple-simultaneous gesture recognition. The experimental results showed that the proposed gesture recognition system using primitive body model encoding and SAI-PSM can exclude meaningless gestures well from the continuous body model data, while performing multiple-simultaneous gesture recognition without losing recognition rates compared to the previous HMM-based work.

WiMAX has been introduced as a competitive alternative for metropolitan broadband wireless access technologies. It is connection oriented and it can provide very high data rates, large service coverage, and flexible quality of services (QoS). Due to the large number of connections and flexible QoS supported by WiMAX, the uplink access in WiMAX networks is very challenging since the medium access control (MAC) protocol must efficiently manage the bandwidth and related channel allocations. In this paper, we propose and investigate a cost-effective WiMAX bandwidth management scheme, named the WiMAX partial sharing scheme (WPSS), in order to provide good QoS while achieving better bandwidth utilization and network throughput. The proposed bandwidth management scheme is compared with a simple but inefficient scheme, named the WiMAX complete sharing scheme (WCPS). A maximum entropy (ME) based analytical model (MEAM) is proposed for the performance evaluation of the two bandwidth management schemes. The reason for using MEAM for the performance evaluation is that MEAM can efficiently model a large-scale system in which the number of stations or connections is generally very high, while the traditional simulation and analytical (e.g., Markov models) approaches cannot perform well due to the high computation complexity. We model the bandwidth management scheme as a queuing network model (QNM) that consists of interacting multiclass queues for different service classes. Closed form expressions for the state and blocking probability distributions are derived for those schemes. Simulation results verify the MEAM numerical results and show that WPSS can significantly improve the network’s performance compared to WCPS.

The main objective is to predict the future degradation and maintenance budget for a suspension bridge system. Bayesian inference is applied to find the posterior probability density function of the source parameters (damage indices and serviceability), given ten years of maintenance data. The posterior distribution of the parameters is sampled using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The simulated risk prediction for decreased serviceability conditions are posterior distributions based on prior distribution and likelihood of data updated from annual maintenance tasks. Compared with conventional linear prediction model, the proposed quadratic model provides highly improved convergence and closeness to measured data in terms of serviceability, risky factors, and maintenance budget for bridge components, which allows forecasting a future performance and financial management of complex infrastructures based on the proposed quadratic stochastic regression model.
According to topics or speaker's intentions in a dialogue, utterance spoken by speaker has a different sentence structure of word combinations. Based on these facts, we have proposed the statistical approach. IDT(intention decision table), which is modeling the correlations between sentence patterns and the intention. In a IDT, the sentence is splitted into 5 different factors, and the intention of a sentence is determined by the similarity between and intention and 5 factors that have represent a sentence. From the experimental results, the IDT has indicated that the prediction rate of an intention is improved 10~18% over the word-intention correlations and is enhanced 3~12% compared with the MIG(Markov intention graph) that models the intention with a transition graph for word categories in a sentence. Based on these facts, we have found that the IDT is effective method for the prediction of an intention.
Purpose: The management of metal-induced field inhomogeneities is one of the major concerns of distortion-free magnetic resonance images near metallic implants. The recently proposed method called "Slice Encoding for Metal Artifact Correction (SEMAC)" is an effective spin echo pulse sequence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) near metallic implants. However, as SEMAC uses the noisy resolved data elements, SEMAC images can have a major problem for improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) without compromising the correction of metal artifacts. To address that issue, this paper presents a novel reconstruction technique for providing an improvement of the SNR in SEMAC images without sacrificing the correction of metal artifacts. Materials and Methods: Low-rank approximation in each coil image is first performed to suppress the noise in the slice direction, because the signal is highly correlated between SEMAC-encoded slices. Secondly, SEMAC images are reconstructed by the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE), also known as Gauss-Markov or weighted least squares. Noise levels and correlation in the receiver channels are considered for the sake of SNR optimization. To this end, since distorted excitation profiles are sparse, $l_1$ minimization performs well in recovering the sparse distorted excitation profiles and the sparse modeling of our approach offers excellent correction of metal-induced distortions. Results: Three images reconstructed using SEMAC, SEMAC with the conventional two-step noise reduction, and the proposed image denoising for metal MRI exploiting sparsity and low rank approximation algorithm were compared. The proposed algorithm outperformed two methods and produced 119% SNR better than SEMAC and 89% SNR better than SEMAC with the conventional two-step noise reduction. Conclusion: We successfully demonstrated that the proposed, novel algorithm for SEMAC, if compared with conventional de-noising methods, substantially improves SNR and reduces artifacts.

Mobile communication systems define user state transition mechanisms in order to manage radio resources and battery power efficiently. In the state transition mechanism, a state with a higher energy consumption inherently offers a shorter access delay, so there is a tradeoff between the energy and delay performances. In this paper, we analyze the user state transition mechanism of UMTS by considering the bursty traffic attributes of mobile applications. We perform a numerical evaluation for both the energy consumption and the activation delay by Markov modeling of the state transition mechanism, and investigate their tradeoff relationship as functions of operational parameters. The resulting energy-delay tradeoff curves clearly show an achievable performance bound of the user state transition mechanism and also offer an optimal operation strategy to minimize the energy consumption while guaranteeing the delay requirement.

For improvement of wireless Internet service quality at vehicle's moving speed, it is advised to reduce the service disruption time by reducing the handover frequency on vehicle's moving path. Particularly, it is advantageous to avoid the handover to cell whose dwell time is short or can be ignored in terms of service continuity and average throughput. This paper proposes the handover scheme that is suitable for vehicle in order to improve the wireless Internet service quality. In the proposed scheme, the handover process continues to be learned before being modeled to Discrete-Time Markov Chain (DTMC). This modeling reduces the handover frequency by preventing the handover to cell that could provide service sufficiently to passenger even when vehicle passed through the cell but there was no need to perform handover. In order to verify the proposed scheme, we observed the average number of handovers, the average RSSI and the average throughput on various moving paths that vehicle moved in the given urban environment. The experiment results confirmed that the proposed scheme was able to provide the improved wireless Internet service to vehicle that moved to some degree of consistency.
