  • As competition increases among ports, new marketing strategies and differentiated means in addition to the existing core services are needed to prevent existing container shipping companies from escaping and to attract new customers. The additional services and reward programs are investigated. How these variables affect relational commitment in terms of customer retention is examined. Customers of the container terminals are examined in terms of psychological behavior. This study presents the structural equation model that shows the connection among benefits, rewards, switching costs and relational commitment. The empirical analysis is done with the subject of the container terminal users and the implications are derived.

  • The main function of a container terminal is to load container freights into vessels and discharge them from vessels. The container terminal needs to utilize its resources effectively in order to improve the productivity of it. This study deals with the deployment model for yard cranes whose type is RMGC (rail mounted gantry crane). We develop a mathematical model for the deployment of yard cranes. The model considers not only the deployment but also the storage plans. It could be divided into two cases according to whether inter-block movements of yard cranes are allowed or not, during the same period Numerical examples are solved and analyzed to validate the model. Then, additional experiments are performed to compare the performance of the model with that of a previous model without the re-deployment of yard cranes.

  • The objective of this study is to present the two-step dispatching strategy for the purpose of the transport vehicle with multi-function used in container terminal. The two-step dispatching is a method to save the waiting time between transport vehicle and cranes using real time location control. The first step dispatching is to allocate the destination location based on the real time location information. The second step dispatching is to indicate the specific job such as loading, unloading, and pick-up based on the condition of working area. This two-step dispatching strategy decreases the waiting times of the stevedoring system and will contribute at a productivity improvement in container terminal.

  • This paper proposes a decision support model for USVs to improve the accuracy of collision avoidance decision-making. It is formed by Navigation Safety Domain (NSD) and domain-based Collision Risk Index (CRI), capable of determining the collision stage and risk between multiple ships. The NSD is composed of a warning domain and a forbidden domain, which is constructed under the constraints of COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). The proposed domain based CRI takes the radius of NSD in various encounter situations as threshold parameters. It is found that the value of collision risk in any directions can be calculated, including actual value and risk threshold. A catamaran USV and 6 given vessels are taken as study objects to validate the proposed model. It is found that the judgment of collision stage is accurate and the azimuth range of risk exists can be detected, hence the ships can take direct and effective collision avoidance measures. According to the relation between the actual value of CRI and risk threshold, the decision support rules are summarized, and the specific terms of COLREGs to be followed in each encounter situation are given.

  • During the ship hull design process, resistance performance estimation is generally calculated by simulation using computational fluid dynamics. Since such hull resistance performance simulation requires a lot of time and computation resources, the time taken for simulation is reduced by CPU clusters having more than tens of cores in order to complete the hull design within the required deadline of the ship owner. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating resistance performance of ship hull by simulation using a graph neural network. This method converts the 3D geometric information of the hull mesh and the physical quantity of the surface into a mathematical graph, and is implemented as a deep learning model that predicts the future simulation state from the input state. The method proposed in the resistance performance experiment of simple hull showed an average error of about 3.5 % throughout the simulation.

  • As the 4th industrial revolution progresses, the application of several cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and mixed reality (MR) in relation to autonomous ships is being considered in the maritime logistics field. The aim of this study was to apply the concept of a digital twin model based on Human Machine Interaction (HMI) including a digital twin model and the role of an operator to a ship. The role of the digital twin is divided into information provision, support, decision, and implementation. The role of the operator is divided into operation, decision-making, supervision, and standby. The system constituting the ship was investigated. The digital twin system that could be applied to the ship was also investigated. The cloud-based digital twin system architecture that could apply investigated applications was divided into ship data collection (part 1), cloud system (part 2), analysis system/ application (part 3), and MR/mobile system (part 4). A Mixed Reality device HoloLens was used as an HMI equipment to perform a simulation test of a digital twin system of an 8 m battery-based electric propulsion ship.

  • Purpose - Market structure is crucial to identify as it defines the market states for new and existing container ports to perform within a given region. the study aims to compare the major ports in the Bay of Bengal in the context of Chittagong Port. Design/methodology/approach - For this study, the past 9 years of container volume data have been collected and analyzed through the HHI index, BCG matrix and shift effect analysis. Based on the analysis, this study has found that the Chittagong Port is in an oligopoly competitive market structure. Findings - The findings have shown that port in low market share and low growth in very recent years with the moderately concentrated ports HHI index. The shift effect analysis shows that the container volumes shifted from one port to another in the 2019 and 2020 periods. This study is the pioneer study in the Bay of Bengal region to identify the market structure, analyze market share and growth, and analyze the market concentration. Research implications or Originality - Future recommendations for the port authority is to take advantage of geolocation; attract international; tax exemption, faster clearance process, reduced waiting charges; increasing storage and technological machinery; promoting maritime logistics education; promoting Chittagong tourism; collaboration with other countries. Also, this study can be used as basic data for the establishment of a new supply chain between Korea and Southwest Asia for the Korean government and companies.

  • Whether or not insurance policies are securities has been debated for nearly a century. The position of claiming that an insurance policy has securities properties is premised on the concomitant nature of the maritime cargo insurance policy to the bill of lading. However, in reality today, marine cargo insurance policies are transferred between parties involved in international trade as an integral part of the bill of lading, and the two securities go through the same distribution process. The issue of recognizing the securities properties of an insurance policy is particularly debated when the insurance policy is issued in a order or bearer form. In a normal insurance policy, the name of the right holder, such as the claimant, is written on the insurance policy, and it is not usually transferred by endorsement. In principle, insurance policies are interpreted as neither securities nor negotiable securities. Sometimes, research is being done on legal reform to respond to digitalization of securities, and bills of lading are the subject of research. If marine cargo insurance policies, which are sometimes premised on distribution, have securities properties, the status of the regulations on digitization of bills of lading currently being studied may be helpful for digitization of marine cargo insurance policies. Under these circumstances, the securities of marine cargo insurance policies are reviewed based on recent practices.

  • This dissertation analysed actuality and literatures aimed at optimizing added value of Busan Port. As far as the literatures are concerned, the limits and the direction to go of Busan Port have been reached through analysing and comparing Busan Port, Antwerp Port, and Rotterdam Port by their each function. While Rotterdam and Antwerp Port are each functioning as an integrated port disposing container freight, general freight and liquid cargo, the container of Busan port contributes over 88 percent of its cargo and the function of the others like bulk is scattered to Ulsan, Masan, and Jinjae Port. Hereby, Busan Port needs to develop its function so as not to duplicate its function with the others in Korea and add value of theirs each. As a result of the local experts about analysing actuality, it turn out that it is similar with the literatures. In macroscopic view, specialization mainly with container, general cargo disposal ability enforcement and etc. are the most important. In microscopic view, rear complex of container tier and the supply base of liquid energy.
