This study investigates the effect of in-law relationship on the marital adjustment of married couples by considering family-oriented Korean culture. Previous in-law studies did not consider the influence of another party who did not attend the survey due to sampling limitations. However, the marital adjustment of married couple and the satisfaction of the relationship with parents-in-law are two-way relationships that affect each other and are not one-sided relationships. By considering the non-independence of the couple's data, Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was utilized to examine the structural relationship between marital adjustment (marital satisfaction and marital stability) and in-law relationship quality (relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law for wives, relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and son-in-law for husbands) of 203 married couples. Results indicated that a high satisfaction of wives' in-law relationship increased personal marital adjustment as well as husbands' marital adjustment. The husbands' positive relationship with in-laws also increased personal marital adjustment and their wives' marital adjustment. The results of this study can be used as basic data for program development and counseling for healthy in-law relationship as well as educational data for couples intending to marry.
The purpose of this study was to investigate Couple's dyadic Adjustment Change across the transition to parenthood. Change in marital adjustment following the birth of the first child was examined in a longitudinal study of 62 couples. The couples completed a series of questionnaires during pregnancy as well as at three months postpartum. The major findings were as follows. 1) The marital adjustment declined significantly over time. Especially, for wives, the transition to parenthood had a negative effect on postpartum marital adjustment. 2) The transition of wives differed from that of husbands. 3) The result of a single regression indicated that, for wives and husbands, the pregnancy marital adjustment had an effect on postpartum marital adjustment. 4) The influence of variables that had an effect on pregnancy marital adjustment changed in the postpartum marital adjustment.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relations between spouse's self-disclosure and marital adjustment. A measurement tools used for this study are self-disclosure scale, which was adapted and reproducted from Jourard's Self-Disclosure! Questionnaire(JSDQ), and marital adjustment scale, which was modified and supplemented form Dyadic Adjustment Scale (D.A.S). developed by Spanier. The subjects were 154 married couples dwelling in Seoul and questionnaires are recorded separately by both spouses. Statistical methods such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one way ANOVA and pearson correlation were used for data analysis. The results of this study are as follows; 1) For husband, self-disclosure degree was significant difference according to level of education. That is, the more husband was higher level of education, the more husband tended to disclose to wife. 2) Among the variables to have influence on the marital adjustment, level of education and marriage pattern had influence on wive's martial adjustment and family income and marriage pattern had influence on husbands' marital adjustment. 3) Wives were higher disclosed than husbands and wives were more disclosed than perceived husbands' disclosure. 4) There were positive correlation between the self-disclosure of husbands and the marital adjustment of wives. (r+.3872, p<.005) And there were positive correlation between the self-disclosure of wives and the marital adjustment of husbands. (r=.4997, p<.005) 5) For wives, the perception of husbands' disclosure correlates with wives' marital adjustment. (r=.4592, p<.005) For husbands, the perception of wives' disclosure correlates with husbands' marital adjustment.(r=.5610, p<.005) From this results, full and honest self-disclosure is needed for high marital adjustment of a married couple. In the future, a study on the relationship between self-disclosure and marital adjustment is need to various measure of many subject.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between marriage migration females' acculturative stress and marital adjustment, especially the mediating and moderating effects of ego-resilience. The structural equation models were tested by setting marriage migration females' acculturative stress as a prediction variable, their marital adjustment as an outcome variable and their ego-resilience as mediator and moderator variables. The sample consisted of 172 marriage migration females from Busan. I analyzed the data using correlation analysis in order to discover the correlation coefficient of those variables among acculturative stress, ego-resilience and marital adjustment. I used the structural equation model (SEM) for investigating the relationship among acculturative stress, ego-resilience and marital adjustment and for investigating the mediating effects of ego-resilience. I also used multiple group analysis and two way ANOVA to investigate the moderating effects of ego-resilience. The results of structural equation modeling were as follows: first, it was proved that ego-resilience was exerted as a mediating variable, because acculturative stress appeared to affect marital adjustment in relation to ego-resilience. Therefore, marital adjustment was evident when ego-resilience was low. Second, it was proved that ego-resilience was exerted as a moderating variable, because those with low ego-resilience experienced high acculturative stress and low marital adjustment, and those with high ego-resilience experienced low acculturative stress and high marital adjustment. Such findings point out the importance of considering personal characteristics, like ego-resilience, in the relationship between acculturative stress and marital adjustment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of self-differentiation with conflict tactics behavior and marital adjustment among married men and women. Specifically, this study tried to examine the differences in the levels of conflict tactics behavior and of marital adjustment according to the levels of self-differentiation. The participants of the present study were 332 married men and 355 women who lived in Chonlabuk-Do province. The major results of this research were as follows. First, there was no significant difference in the level of total self-differentiation between men and women. There were significant differences in the degrees of sexually coercive conflict tactics behavior and marital adjustment between sexes. Second, results of difference analyses showed that there were significant differences in the levels of conflict tactics behaviors and of marital adjustment according to levels of self-differentiation. Finally, in the case of married men and women, the variable significantly affecting the conflict tactics behavior and the marital adjustment was the levels of self-differentiation. Based on the results as above, this research discussed the issue of the concept of self differentiation applied to Korean situation, and suggested some implications for family life education for decreasing conflict between spouses and for enhancing marital relationship.

The results of this study are as follows: (a) The conscientiousness and openness of personality patterns turned out to be common personality factors that represent a positive affect on the intermarried couples' effort to adapt. (b) The extroversions, agreeableness, and neuroticism shown significantly increase and decrease the intermarried husband's marital adjustment, but the same did not have a significant influence on the intermarried wife's marital adjustment. (c) Factors that affect marital adjustment, the conflict resolution styles of intermarriage couples showed different results depending on the gender. (d) The Intermarried wife's personality patterns represented a positive affect on her marital adjustment by interacting with her husband's conflict resolution styles, while the intermarried husband's personality patterns represented a positive affect on his marital adjustment by interacting with his wife's conflict resolution styles. The implications of this study will be discussed in the conclusion.

(b) The extroversion, agreeableness, and openness of husbands were found to have a positive effect on their communication and marital adjustment in regards to the personality patterns of international. (c) Conscientiousness was identified as the only factor that affects the marital adjustment of a wife in regards to personality patterns. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between parental strain and marital adjustment of employed mothers after their transition to the parenthood, and to investigate buffering effect of social support on the relation. The parental strain variables (physical strain and emotional strain) appear to be significant predictors of marital adjustment for employed mothers with first baby. The analysis on interaction effect indicates that social support can be a positive buffering indicator. A comparison reveals that mothers with high physical strain have significantly higher marital adjustment than those with low strain. But in the context of high social support, the difference of marital adjustment between the two mothers is reduced.
