A Study on Work and Family Life of Married Female Production Workers and Policy Implications(II) (대구지역 생산직 기혼여성의 취업 및 가족생활실태파악과 대책수립에 관한 연구(II))

  • This study examines work and family life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry. Data were gathered from the use of fact-to-face interview method from a sample of 230 married working women. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : (1) With high rates of change of job, most of the respondents remain unstable in their working situation. It was shown that the important factors influencing job satisfaction of married women are women's life cycle, degree of contribution of wife's income toward total family income, and husband's attitude toward wife's empolyment. The degree of job satisfaction is also strongly influenced by labor structural factors such as pay, work environment and fringe benefits. (2) The amount of household labor time was limited by job-related factors rather than by family-related factors, because among these working women employment itself is necessarily for their subsistance. (3) It was shown that wives participated more actively in their marital communications than their husbands. Most of the respondents showed the syncratic type of the decision making patterns, but this results does not necessarily mean wives exercised an equal power with their husbands. The economic factors and the emotional instability of the husband are the ones mostly influencing marital conflicts of the employed women. It was found that the respondents easily revealed marital conflicts related to personal problems of their husbands(such as extramarital affairs, gambling and alchoholism). However, they tried to overcome the structural conflicts related to authoritarian attitudes of their husbands or economic problems without any complaints. (4) Mothers have difficulty in controlling their adolescent children, due to the weakening of parental authority. Although most of the respondents perceived their employment as having negative impacts on their children, they still have high expectations toward their children. Inspite of low degree of father role expectations and facther role performance of their husbands, most of the respondents anticipated expressive roles as well as traditionally instrumental role from their husbands. Finally, these findings would help us determine family welfare policies in Korea. Improvements in paid and household labor structure of married women should be accomplished at the national level. Also, the acting programs for parent education, marital councelling services, and law enforcement for equal employment between men and women should be provided in our society.

Factors influencing quality of life in low-income women with young children in Korea: a cross-sectional study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of health-promoting behaviors (HPB), marital intimacy, and parenting stress on the quality of life (QoL) of low-income women with young children in Korea, an underserved group. Methods: This cross-sectional survey employed a descriptive correlational design. Using convenience sampling, 123 low-income women with children younger than 6 years were recruited from 14 health and community centers in Jeonju, Korea, from June 2020 to May 2021. Participants completed a questionnaire on QoL, HPB, marital intimacy, and parenting stress. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Participants, who were on average 37.41±3.65 years old and had 1 to 2 children (n=98, 79.7%), reported a mid-level (3.14 out of 1-5) of QoL. Marital intimacy (β=.38, p<.001) was the most influential factor on the QoL of low-income women with young children. In descending order, HPB (β=.35, p<.001) and non- employment status (β=-.21, p=.003) had a significant influence on QoL (F=15.64, p<.001), and the overall explanatory power was 49.0%. Conclusion: Considering the mid-level QoL of low-income women with young children, programs aimed at improving the QoL of low-income women need to promote marital intimacy and maintain HPB, while considering their employment status. Strategies that include couple counseling, health care to encourage healthy lifestyles, and reemployment education are needed.

Factors Affecting Depression in Women Patients with Osteoarthritis (골관절염 여성 환자의 우울에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine factors affecting depression in women patients with osteoarthritis. Methods: Raw data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014 was used. Data for 480 women were included. Variables related to general, physical and psychological characteristics were selected. After a sampling plan compound file was created using IBM SPSS 23.0 program, data were analyzed by giving weights. Results: The results of the study are as follows. 1) Depression was significantly different according to economic status, marital status, knee pain, stress and subjective health status (p<.05). 2) Factors affecting the women included marital status, knee pain, stress, and subjective health status. The explanatory power was 41.0%. Conclusion: Results indicate that there is a need to give comprehensive consideration to the factors identified in this study when designing preventive interventions and management plans to alleviate depression in women with osteoarthritis.

The Influence of Value of Children, Marital Intimacy, Perception of Childbirth, Co-parenting on Parental Satisfaction in Women with a Child (한 자녀를 둔 어머니의 자녀가치와 부부친밀감, 분만경험지각, 부부공동양육이 부모역할만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • South Korea's total fertility rate dropped to 1.2 in 2014, which was far below the population replacement level of 2.07. Parental satisfaction of mothers contribute to secondary childbirth intention as well as child outcome. This study was to identify the factors affecting parental satisfaction particularly in mothers with one child. The survey conducted in five daycare centers in B city from September to October in 2015. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses using SPSS/Win 21 software. 42.7% of variance in parental satisfaction was accounted for by co-parenting(t=5.566, p<.001), value of children(t=3.575, p=.001), and perception of childbirth(t=2.906, p=.005). The explain power was significant(F=21.581, p<.001). This study revealed that the perception of childbirth last long enough to affect mothers of children up to the age of 6. Midwifes and nurses working with laboring women should try to give them positive experience of delivery.

Measuring Nuclear Power Plant Negative Externalities through the Life Satisfaction Approach: The Case of Ulsan City

  • We have hypothesized that nuclear risk is significantly inversely related to the distance from residences to nuclear power plants and that the level of life satisfaction of residents therefore increases with the distance. We empirically explore the relationship between Ulsan citizens' life satisfaction levels and the distance between their residences and the Kori and Wolsong nuclear power plants (NPP) based on the life satisfaction approach (LSA). The dataset we used covers only Ulsan citizens from the biennial Ulsan Statistics on Citizen's Living Condition and Consciousness of 2014 and 2016. Controlling for micro-variables such as education, work satisfaction, gender, marital status, and expenditures, we found a statistically significant relationship between life satisfaction and the distance between the residences and the nuclear power plants. Nuclear negative externalities including (i) health and environmental impact, (ii) radioactive waste disposal, and (iii) the effect of severe accidents can be quantified in terms of LS units and monetary units. We were able to calculate the monetary value of NPP externalities at $277 per kilometer of distance for Kori and $280 per kilometer of distance for Wolsong at constant 2015 prices. These estimates are quite different from the traditional estimates made with the contingent valuation method, whereas they are similar to the findings of LSA studies abroad. Hence, the need to adopt the LSA in South Korea and policy implications are demonstrated.

Factors Affecting the Cost-Reduction Practice of Clinical Nurses (임상 간호사의 비용절감수행 영향 요인)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to find factors affecting the cost-reduction practice of clinical nurses. Methods : The Data were collected from Feb. 25, to Mar. 15, 2015.the Total subjects were 201 nurses working in secondary-care hospitals located in Busan Results : The Meaningful variables that explain the cost-reduction practice in clinical nurses were psychological ownership, religion, and marital status in that order. Total explanation power was 22.1.% and psychological ownership has most explanation power. Conclusions : Psychological ownership and economic consciousness need to improve to develop cost-reduction practices. Additionally, nurses with and low concern about finances need to receive financial-related education.

The effects of Ego-resiliency, Marital communication, and Mental health on Happiness in middle aged women (중년여성의 자아탄력성, 부부의사소통, 정신건강이 행복감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effect of Ego-resilience, Marital communication, and Mental health on Happiness among middle-aged women Methods: A descriptive correlation study design was used with a convenience sample consisting of 239 women. SPSS Win21.0 program was used for the descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, and multiple-regression analysis. The mean score for ego-resilience was 3.46±.527(range: 1-5), marital communication was 2.44±.52(range: 1-5), mental health 1.82±.66(range: 0-4) and happiness was 3.21±56(ranse: 1-5). Happiness was found to have a significant positive correlation with ego-resilience(r=.393, p<.001) and negative correlation with somatization(r=-.134 p=.039), depression(r=-.356, p<.001), anxiety(r=-.269, p<.001). The predictive factors on the Happiness were depression(β=-.437, p<.001), ego-resilience(β=.350, p<.001), Somatization(β=.239, p=.009) and subjective health status: average (β=-.150, p=.009), unhealthy(β=-.147, p=.015). The explanatory power was 30.4% (F=14.02, p <.001). Based on the findings of this study, it is important to provide services to ego-resilience and mental health among middle aged women.

Choice, Exchange Perspective in Family Research (교환 이론적 관점에서의 가족학 연구에 대한 고찰)

  • Family researchers had devoted little attention to Choice, Exchange theory by the time 1960. Being anchored by Thibaut & kelley(1959), this theory becomes one of the most widely used theoretical frameworks for family research. Waller's(1938) famous rating-dating hypothesis was intrinsically an exchange formulation. Blood and Wolfe(1960) employed the concept of rewards in their theory of family power. Farber(1964) also used the reward concept in his theory of permanent availability. Heer's(1964) specific application of its concepts to spousal power was among its earliest uses in the family. The general principle or most general proposition of the theory is that humans avoid costly behavior and seek rewarding statuses, to the end maxmize profits. This review will attempt to show that Choice, Exchange theory is applicable to the several arenas of family interaction and that it can provide an explanation for family behavior. Subjects such as mate selection, marital unstability, family cohesion, spousal power, the problems of aged, family co-unseling, and so on are included. By discussing research findings from a perspective of rewrds and costs this review will show that the application of the theory is not limited to one or two substative specialities with in the family domain. After all Choice, Exchange theory is truly general and can be productively applied to any domain of human behavior.

Nurse's Perception of Technological Development and Professional Self-Concept (의료기술발달에 대한 간호사의 지각과 전문직 자아개념)

  • This study was conducted to explore the nurse's perception of technological development and professional self-concept. The research subjects were 560 clinical nurses in Korea, who worked the general hospitals in Seoul, Kyeonggi, and the Kangwon province. Data sampling was done for the month, of December. 1997. The research tool consisted of 82 items questionnaires which were demographic data, TIQ, PSCNI. The research findings were as follows: 1. Nurses perceived the technological development as slightly positive (Mean =48.8). Also, nurses saw that the fastest developing technological nursing unit was the cardiac care unit, while the lowest technological developing nursing unit was the psychiatric unit. 2. The view of technological development was found to be significantly different according to religion (P=.0109), marital status (P=.0431), and the practical setting (P=.0048). Professional self concept was significantly different according to age (P=.0001), religion (P=.0001), education (P=.0007), marital status (P=.0000), career (P=.0001), and position (P=.0000). 3. The relationship between a nurse's perception of technological development and professional self-concept was highly correlated(r=.26, P=.0001). In the results of the multiple regression, the factors influencing professional self-concept were career, the nurse's perception of technological development, the level of technological development in nursing unit, and education. All these parameters showed the explaining power of 15.4% of the professional self-concept. In conclusion, nurses recognized the technological development was related to the professional self-concept. This study shed light on the meaning of technological development and vision of the nursing profession. Inservice education program should be developed to help the adaptability to technological development and conduct the qualitative research to explore the world of technological development which the nurses are experiencing in nursing.

A Study on Job Satisfaction and Relevant Variables in Employees of Multi-Cultural Family Support Center: Focused Home-Visiting Educator (다문화가족지원센터 종사자의 직무만족도 및 관련변인에 관한 연구: 방문교육지도사를 중심으로)

  • This study examined job satisfaction and relevant variables for multi-cultural family home-visiting educators. The selected study subjects were 192 home-visiting educators who work at Multi-Cultural Family Support Centers in the Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Chungcheongnam-do areas. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS ver. 18.0. The main results were as follows. First, the job satisfaction level in multi-cultural family visiting educators stood at 3.29 points, subjects' age, averagely monthly income, marital status, and activity career were shown to influence generally upon job satisfaction, self-efficacy, job stress, and cultural competency. Job satisfaction was high in groups with: a high age, small career, low averagely monthly income, and married. Second, self-efficacy and job stress were big in the job satisfaction of multi-cultural family visiting educators. The same outcome as the existing prior research was indicated. Cultural competency was not significant. Third, an examination of relative influence upon job satisfaction in home visiting educators indicated that the explanation power was 29.0%. Significant influential variables included academic background, marital status, self-regulation, and role ambiguity. Self-regulation was greater for those with lower academic backgrounds and unmarried. Job satisfaction was higher in the lower role ambiguity. Thus, the same outcome as the existing prior research was indicated. Cultural competency wasn't indicated to be significant. This has significance in having shown characteristics of job satisfaction in multi-cultural family visiting educators.
