  • This study investigates the effect of in-law relationship on the marital adjustment of married couples by considering family-oriented Korean culture. Previous in-law studies did not consider the influence of another party who did not attend the survey due to sampling limitations. However, the marital adjustment of married couple and the satisfaction of the relationship with parents-in-law are two-way relationships that affect each other and are not one-sided relationships. By considering the non-independence of the couple's data, Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was utilized to examine the structural relationship between marital adjustment (marital satisfaction and marital stability) and in-law relationship quality (relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law for wives, relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and son-in-law for husbands) of 203 married couples. Results indicated that a high satisfaction of wives' in-law relationship increased personal marital adjustment as well as husbands' marital adjustment. The husbands' positive relationship with in-laws also increased personal marital adjustment and their wives' marital adjustment. The results of this study can be used as basic data for program development and counseling for healthy in-law relationship as well as educational data for couples intending to marry.

Statistical methods such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one way ANOVA and pearson correlation were used for data analysis. The results of this study are as follows; 1) For husband, self-disclosure degree was significant difference according to level of education. That is, the more husband was higher level of education, the more husband tended to disclose to wife. 2) Among the variables to have influence on the marital adjustment, level of education and marriage pattern had influence on wive's martial adjustment and family income and marriage pattern had influence on husbands' marital adjustment. 3) Wives were higher disclosed than husbands and wives were more disclosed than perceived husbands' disclosure. 4) There were positive correlation between the self-disclosure of husbands and the marital adjustment of wives. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between marriage migration females' acculturative stress and marital adjustment, especially the mediating and moderating effects of ego-resilience. The structural equation models were tested by setting marriage migration females' acculturative stress as a prediction variable, their marital adjustment as an outcome variable and their ego-resilience as mediator and moderator variables. The sample consisted of 172 marriage migration females from Busan. I analyzed the data using correlation analysis in order to discover the correlation coefficient of those variables among acculturative stress, ego-resilience and marital adjustment. I used the structural equation model (SEM) for investigating the relationship among acculturative stress, ego-resilience and marital adjustment and for investigating the mediating effects of ego-resilience. I also used multiple group analysis and two way ANOVA to investigate the moderating effects of ego-resilience. The results of structural equation modeling were as follows: first, it was proved that ego-resilience was exerted as a mediating variable, because acculturative stress appeared to affect marital adjustment in relation to ego-resilience. Therefore, marital adjustment was evident when ego-resilience was low. Second, it was proved that ego-resilience was exerted as a moderating variable, because those with low ego-resilience experienced high acculturative stress and low marital adjustment, and those with high ego-resilience experienced low acculturative stress and high marital adjustment. Such findings point out the importance of considering personal characteristics, like ego-resilience, in the relationship between acculturative stress and marital adjustment.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between parental strain and marital adjustment of employed mothers after their transition to the parenthood, and to investigate buffering effect of social support on the relation. The parental strain variables (physical strain and emotional strain) appear to be significant predictors of marital adjustment for employed mothers with first baby. The analysis on interaction effect indicates that social support can be a positive buffering indicator. A comparison reveals that mothers with high physical strain have significantly higher marital adjustment than those with low strain. But in the context of high social support, the difference of marital adjustment between the two mothers is reduced.
