  • When concrete structures are built in marine environment, they may be deteriorated and have the poor durability and quality caused by steel corrosion or by chemical attack of magnesium or sulfate ions. Especially, Mg ions contained in seawater make concrete surface weaken by chemical reaction with $Ca(OH)_2$ In this study, a concrete structure built in 1947 was investigated to estimate the factors, especially chemical attack, which can cause concrete to deteriorate. Furthermore, the instrumental analysis methods such as XRD and ESEM were performed to find the reactants in concrete under marine environment.

  • The in situ observations and the seawater analyses were conducted at all seasons from July 1996 to April 1999 for the purpose of describing the characteristics of seasonal variations of water quality in Mokpo harbour, Korea. Vertical stratification started to be formed in water column in spring, developed in summer and disappeared in fall. In summer, vertical density distribution of water column was found to be in stable structure with lower temperature and higher salinity of bottom water, and the vertical mixing of water between surface and bottom layers was restricted. In winter, however, surface water was found to be similar to bottom water in temperature and salinity, and water column was in unstable structure and in well-mixed condition between surface and bottom waters. The saturation percentage of dissolved oxygen(DO) in bottom water of inner part of Mokpo harbour at all seasons was shown to be decreased to the third grade or under the third grade of Korean standards of seawater quality. In particular, dissolved oxygen was oversaturated in surface water and undersaturated in bottom water in summer, due to stratification and organic pollution. The difference of DO concentration between surface and bottom waters was found to be greater in spring and summer than in fall and winter, due to stratification and photosynthesis of phytoplankton. The concentrations of chemical oxygen demand(COD) over the entire waters of Mokpo harbour were found to fluctuate from below the third grade to the first grade of Korean standards through all seasons and COD concentrations of same seasons were shown to be different year after year. In particular, in view of COD, the annual average seawater quality of Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be in third grade of Korean standards, due to organic pollution. The average COD of surface water was greater than that of bottom water in spring and summer, due to the autochthonous COD caused by production of phytoplankton in surface waters, while the average COD of surface water was similar to that of bottom water in fall and winter, due to the vertical mixing of water between surface and bottom layers.

  • In order to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations of marine environmental parameters, we collected seawater samples in the middle east coast of Korea in 2013-2014. A high temperature and low salinity were distinctively observed in the summer and a low temperature and high salinity pattern in the winter. The temperature of the bottom water was in the range of $2^{\circ}C$ to $7^{\circ}C$, with the temperature being relatively high in the winter, while the salinity was measured to be around 34, with no large differences across the seasons. The dissolved oxygen concentrations were in the range of $7mg\;L^{-1}$ to $12mg\;L^{-1}$, and it was relatively high in May compared to other seasons. The seawater temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration at the surface layer showed a significant negative correlation in the autumn and winter seasons, based on which it is seemed that water temperature is the main factor controlling the amount of dissolved oxygen in the autumn and winter seasons. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and silicate (DSi) increased 11- and 7-fold, respectively, in the winter compared to the summer. The DIN to DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) ratio for the surface seawater was approximately 16, but it was relatively low in the spring season. On the other hand, the DIN to DIP ratio was relatively high in the summer. Based on this, it is seemed that nitrogen and phosphorus were the growth-limiting nutrients for phytoplankton in the spring and summer, respectively. Water quality was I (excellent) ~III (medium) level at the most stations except for some stations (level IV) during the autumn season, having low dissolved oxygen saturations.

  • The biodegradability in water of the artificial baits for blue crab pots which were made of intestines of mackerel, tuna and grinded krill were studied. The biodegradability of artificial bait was evaluated with the effective capacity of 10L water tank which was made of acryl pipe at the velocity of 1m/d and hydraulic retention time of 12 hours. For the 23 days operation time, all artificial baits were degraded fast at the early stage of operation time and stabilized within 5 days after start up. The rates of biodegradation were different depending on the raw materials of artificial baits. In terms of degradation rate of organic matter which can be expressed as COD, artificial bait made of tunas intestine showed the fastest degradation rate. On the other hand, in terms of degradation rate of nitrogenous matter which can be expressed as ammonia nitrogen, artificial bait made of mackerels intestine showed the fastest degradation rate. In order to evaluate the effect of artificial bait on marine ecosystem, seawater qualities including SS, COD, DO, nitrogen, phosphorus were determined depending on depth and location during 2 days test operation period. It is apparent that the effect of artificial bait on seawater quality was negligible when comparing seawater quality of test operation area with control area.

  • The review of statements and coastal development characteristics in South Korea were diagnosed by the consultation on the coastal area utilization in Korea. The occupation and the use of public water were dominated by installation of coastal structure and seawater supply and drainage whereas the reclamation areas were predominantly utilized for developing industrial complex, harbor, fishing port and road. The occupation and the use were dominant in western coast, but reclamation was dominant in southern coast of Korea. The number of utilization cases was particularly greater in Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Gyeonggi Province including Incheon. The number of the statements reviews increased by more than 200 cases in 2008 compared with 2007, and most of them were the simple statements. The statements related to ocean disposal of dredged sediment, reclamation, dredging sediment, seawater supply and drainage, and marine sand mining were submitted for review. Coastal utilization was especially active in the regions of seawater quality criteria I and II. In particular, special management sea areas designated under the relevant marine regulations were utilized mostly by reclamation for developing harbor, fishing port and coastal structure. Development activities in national parks comprised primarily structure installation and coastal maintenance. In the fisheries resources protection areas, 40% of the total cases accounted for coastal maintenance, 31% for structure installation, and 16% for seawater supply and drainage. In addition, alternative plans for the improvement in policies and system of marine environmental impact assessment were suggested to enhance the function and confidence of the consultation on the coastal area utilization in Korea.

  • Impact of thermal discharge of nuclear power plant on marine environment is naturally reflected in biogeochemical changes of seawater. Until now, many investigation activities and reports of impact analysis of marine environment were occasionally inadequate to provide sufficient justification in resolving controversial conflict of interests related with thermal discharge of nuclear power plant. From the scrutinized examination of recent 17 reports published in Korea between 2002 and 2004, the most apparent issue was inadequacy of sampling design and absence of significance of many measured parameters. In many cases, lack of statistical interpretation of raw data incurred subjective or ambiguous assessment results, which failed in deducing mutual concurrence between the parties of interest. In overall all, the main reasons for impairing integrity of previous reports seem to be inconsistency of environmental investigation procedures between research institutions, inadequate sampling design at the discretion of institutions and lack of objectivity of impact assessment based on statistical interpretation. Therefore, the primary goal of this study is to (1) discuss the blown issues on previous routine practice of seawater quality assessment procedures, and to (2) provide improved investigation procedures and rational standard criteria strictly based on statistical analysis for the better seawater quality assessment, which could be supported by scientific community, public agency, investigation institution and the other parties of interest.

  • The three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic model was applied to estimate the effect of water quality improvement by the effluent treatment of landbase-seawater culture system in the Kamak bay The computed residual currents were dominated southward flow at the northern narrow strait and eastward flow and clockwise water circulation at the mouth of the bay, strongly. The mean relative errors of DIP, DIN and COD between the simulated and observed results at 9 stations in the Kamak bay were shown 14.3%, 25.8% and 14.4%, respectively. There were high concentrations of DIP, DIN and COD at the northwestern bay which is influenced by pollution loads. The simulations were performed using an ecosystem model under the conditions of DIP 90%, DIN 80% and COD 60% treatment efficiency by the ozone treatment system of landbase-seawater culture system. As a results of simulation, the improvement effects of DIP, DIN and COD are 34.4~54.0% (average 46.4%), 0.4~25.4%(average 8.4%) and 15.6~29.4%(average 22.7%), respectively. Therefore the area of seawater quality grade I based on COD was extended in the bay.

  • The management of water quality and fishery resources with a major environmental problem in eutrophic coastal sea is studied. The numerical experiments using the water-sediment quality model (WSQM) were carried out for the management of water quality at the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. The results of long-term water quality simulation showed responses of seawater quality to input loads to vary in different localities. A formula roughly forecasting water qualify to estimate the effect of loading abatement was proposed. The simulation for the improvement of seawater quality showed the abatements of nutrient loads such as total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) as well as organic loads such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) to be peformed in the eastern Seto Inland Sea from Bisan Seto to Osaka Bay. On the other hand, it is indicated that the increase of loading leads to the increase of primary production. while not straightly to the increase of fish production for the catch of fisheries.

  • The inter-comparison project for seawater salinity measurements, in which 25 laboratories from 16 countries took part, was conducted by JCOMM (Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology) for the first time in 2014. Two seawater samples of different salinity values ranging from 30-35 and 20-25 for Sample A and Sample B respectively and which had sufficient homogeneity and stability were distributed to all participants. Participants measured the salinity in their own laboratories at least 3 times and reported the results. Statistical treatments were applied to the results to assess discrepancies among laboratories. 20 out of the 25 laboratories used laboratory salinometers and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group ${\alpha}$; while 5 out of the 25 laboratories used hand-held measuring instruments and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group ${\beta}$. Bias described as discrepancy among laboratories in group ${\alpha}$ was within ${\pm}0.001$ and expanded uncertainty (k = 2) was in the vicinity of 0.002. The bias and the uncertainty of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), in group ${\alpha}$, were 0.000 and 0.002, respectively. The biases of group ${\beta}$ were greater than group ${\alpha}$ because of constraints related to instrument accuracy. Biases from 3 laboratories in group ${\beta}$ exceed the accuracy specification of the corresponding instruments. Considering that the uncertainty of Standard Seawater (SSW) is of the order 0.001 to 0.002, the inter-comparison results show that 16 laboratories among the 25 laboratories made high quality measurements, largely indistinguishable from one another.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the sanitary characteristics of sea water in a part of the south coast, Korea and to check the seawater which is in compliance with the recommended bacteriological criteria for shellfish cultivation. The samples of sea water were collected at 14 sampling stations established in the survey area between March 2014 and October 2014. Food poisoning caused by seafood consumption is often associated with pathogenic microorganisms originated from fecal contamination. Therefore, fecal coliform is very important criteria for evaluating the safety of fisheries in coastal areas. The range of geometric mean (GM) and the estimated 90th percentile values of total coliform were 4.1~83.1 MPN/100 mL, and 11.7~834.1 MPN/100 mL, respectively. The GM and the estimated 90th percentile values of fecal coliform were 2.5~22.7 MPN/100 mL and 2.5~170.0 MPN/100 mL, respectively. Therefore, the bacteriological safety of seawater at this shellfish-growing area met with the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program (KSSP) criteria for a growing area. However, the values are seasonally exceed the KSSP criteria, suggesting that the monitoring and evaluation of seawater quality is very important in shellfish-growing area.
