  • Because of recent interests in energy conservation and prevention of environmental pollution, research related to these topics is increasing. The U.S. Navy has started to study the HED (hybrid electric drive) system in order to improve the COGAG propulsion system's fuel efficiency in AEGIS destroyers. (This ship's fuel consumption is 40% of the total fuel consumption of the U.S. Navy.) In addition, the Korean Navy is considering applications of the HED system in AEGIS destroyers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the U.S.A.'s HED system and to simulate its generating mode energy saving rate using LabVIEW. The results confirmed that the fuel savings are about 700 kg/h.

  • Due to global decarbonization movement and tightening of maritime emissions restrictions, the shipping industry is going to switch to alternative fuels. Among candidates of alternative fuel, methanol is promising for decreasing SOx and CO2 emissions, resulting in minimum climate change and meeting the goal of green shipping. In this study, a novel combined system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbine (GT), and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) targeted for marine vessels was proposed. The SOFC is the main power generator of the system, whereas the GT and PEMFC could recover waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and increase waste heat utilizing efficiency of the system. Thermodynamics model of the combined system and each component were established and analyzed. Energy and exergy efficiencies of subsystems and the entire system were estimated with participation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the overall multigeneration system were estimated to be 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. The combination of GT and PEMFC increased the energy efficiency by 18.91% compared to the SOFC stand-alone system. By changing the methanol distribution ratio from 0.05 to 0.4, energy and exergy efficiencies decreased by 15.49% and 5.41%, respectively. During the starting up and maneuvering period of vessels, a quick response from the power supply system and propulsion plant is necessary. Utilization of PEMFC coupled with SOFC has remarkable meaning and benefits.

  • To reduce the mechanical energy loss and to get the high energy efficiency, an apparatus of wave power generation inducing a consistent one way rotating motion from the wave reciprocation motions was developed and the hydraulic experiments for the real electric power production were conducted and the results were discussed. In the experiments for the shape of the buoyant tank, the efficiency of the fixed 9 cm diameter type enduring the wave plate weight was 14.6% and this was the best result for all shapes. But although the free sliding type was expected to represent a high efficiency, the experiments did not show a good result as 8.5% efficiency. Therefore, the shape of buoyant tank was decided as the fixed 9 cm diameter type in the next all tests. In the experiments for the various incident waves, when the water depth was 90 cm, the average efficiencies were measured as 3.9% in the 2nd gear, 4.9% in the 3rd gear, 4.9% in the 4th gear, 12.0% in the 5th gear, 10.0% in the 6th gear, 3.1% in the 7th gear, and 3.0% in the 8th gear. Also, when the water depth was 80 cm, the average efficiency was shown as 15.0% with 5th gear condition. Therefore the high average efficiency as 13.5% was given with 80~90 cm water depth and the 5th gear in the model.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate structural safety according to environmental conditions acting on the piping of offshore structure and the motion of the structure. As for conditions acting on the piping, the maximum and minimum temperature conditions were used to analyze the design conditions of N2 generator. The motion of the structure was calculated and applied according to the DNV(Det Norske Veritas) rule. Each condition was combined and a total of 26 load combinations were constructed according to thermal load, motion load, and presence or absence of pipe support. Analysis was performed using a commercial program MSC Patran/Nastran. Thermal analysis was performed by applying the steady-state method, Sol 153. Thermal-structural coupled analysis was performed using Sol 101, a linear-static method. As a result of the analysis, the stress tended to increase when temperature inside the pipe was lower in Set 1 and Set 2, when temperature was higher in Set 3, and when the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the pipe in Set 4 was increased. However, the sum of stresses in the condition with only temperature load and the condition with only the kinetic load did not show the same value as the stress in the composite load condition of two loads. That is, the influence of the motion load varied depending on the direction of motion, the arrangement of pipes, and the position of the support. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the size and direction of the motion load acting on the piping, the arrangement of the piping, and the location of the pipe supports during the design of piping.

  • IMO (International Maritime Organization) has been strengthening the regulations of ship emission gas such as sulfur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and carbon dioxides (CO2) to protect the marine environment. Especially, ECA (Emission Control Area) has been set and operated in the USA and US. As a countermeasure against these environmental regulations, the demand for environmentally, friendly and highly efficient vessels has led to a growing interest in technology related research with respect to electric propulsion systems capable of reducing exhaust gas. Container ships were excluded from the application coverage of the electric propulsion systems for reasons of operation at economical speed. However, in the future, the need for electric propulsion system is expected to rise, because it is easy to monitor and control so that it can be an applicate to smart ship which are represented by fourth industrial revolution technology. In this study, research was carried out to design a generator and battery capacity through the load analysis of the 6,800TEU container ship to apply the electric propulsion system of the container ship. A capacity design based on the load analysis has an advantage that the generator can be operated in a high efficiency section through the load distribution control using the battery.

  • The construction of new renewable energy facilities is steadily increasing every year. In particular, the offshore wind farm market, which has abundant development scalability and a high production coefficient, is growing rapidly. The southwest sea has the highest possible offshore wind power potential, and related projects are to be promoted. This study presents a basic design procedure by the EUROCODE and considers structural safety in the development of an effective of shore wind foundation in the clay layer. In a previous study, the wind power generator of 5MW class was the main target, but the 8MW of wind turbine generator, which meets the technical trend of the wind turbine market in the Southwest sea, was selected as the standard model. Furthermore, a foundation that fulfills the geological conditions of the Southwest sea was developed. The structural safety of this foundation was verified using finite element method. Moreover, structural safety was secured by proper reinforcement from the initial design. Based on the results of this study, structural safety check for various types of foundations is possible in the future. Additionally, specialized structural design and evaluation guidance were also established.

  • A research on a simulator for a side walking path of a 16 degree-of-freedom (d.o.f) biped walking robot(BWR) which is composed of 4 d.o.f upper-part body and 12 d.o.f lower-part of the body is presented. For generation of stable side walking motion, the kinematics, dynamics and the zero moment of point(ZMP) of the BWR were analyzed analytically and included in the simulator. To operate the motion simulator for stable side walking of the BWR, a graphic user interface program was developed which needs inputs for the side distance between legs, base joint angle, walking type, and walking velocity. The simulator was developed to generate joint angle data of legs for side walking, and the data are transmitted to the BWR for stable side walking. In the simulator, a new path function for smooth walking motion was proposed and applied to the simulator and actual motion of a BWR. Also for actual side walking, an algorithm for estimating backlashes of the actuating joint motors was proposed and included in the simulator. To validate the performance of the proposed motion simulator, the simulator was operated and its side walking data of the simulator were generated for a period of side walking.

  • Filament winding process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. And now it is well established as a versatile method for storage tanks and pipe for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by split disk test fixture and dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values obtained by the rule of mixture. And the purpose of this paper is to suggest an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimens tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than of a ring specimen tested by the split disk test because the stress concentration in edges of s split disk test fixture is more severe than the that of dress disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.

  • A transient liquid crystal technique has become one of the most effective ways in measuring the local heat transfer coefficients on the entire surface. The key Point of this technique is to convert the inlet flow temperature into an exponential temperature profile using a mesh heater. In order to verify the validity of this technique. the heat transfer characteristics on the wall surface by a pair of longitudinal vortices is investigated experimently and numerically. A standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ is used for the numerical analysis of turbulent flow field. It is found from experiment and numerical analysis that two peak values exist over the whole domain. as the longitudinal vortices move to the farther downstream. these peak values decrease and the dimensionless averaged Nusselt number with the lapse of time is maintained nearly at constant values. The experiment results obtained from the present experiment in terms of the transient liquid crystal technique are in good agreement with the numerical results. Therefore, the transient liquid crystal technique developed for the measurement of heat transfer coefficient is proved to be a valid method.
