Hydraulic forces on a vessel are changed according to the depth/draft ratio (h/d) during berthing or towing in a lateral direction. It is well known that lateral current force coefficient is dependent on the kinds of vessel in question. However, not much research exists about the characteristics of general ships, except for oil tankers, as suggested by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF). In this paper, lateral current coefficient related to h/d is analyzed in comparison with theoretical values and experiments with a 93m passenger ship. The estimated total resistance on the ship was 14.0 tons under an h/d of 1.6 with a lateral current force coefficient of 1.9. This was found to be similar to the measured value of 13.8 tons on the towing line in actual experiments. Resistances on the ship under an h/d of 3.0 was calculated to be 19.9 tons with a lateral current force coefficient of 1.3. Therefore, the lateral current force coefficient was expected to be 1.3 under an h/d of 3.0, in experiments measured value 20.0 tons. And the discharging currents did not affect the towing force if the towing line was over 30 m, since the towing resistance showed a similar tendency for changes in line length from 30 m to 60 m.
Tension Leg Platform (TLP) is a floating structure that consists of four columns with large diameter. The diffraction theory is used to calculate the wave force of floating structures with large dimensions (TLP). In this study, the diffraction and Froude-Krylov wave forces of TLP for surge, sway and heave motions and wave force moment for roll, pitch degrees of freedom in different wave periods and three wave approach angles have been investigated. From the numerical results, it can be concluded that the wave force for different wave approach angle is different. There are some humps and hollows in the curve of wave forces and moment in different wave periods (different wavelengths). When wave incidents with angle 0 degree, the moment of diffraction force for pitch in high wave periods (low frequencies) is dominant. The diffraction force for heave in low wave periods (high wave frequencies) is dominant. The phase difference between Froude-Krylov and diffraction forces is important to obtain total wave force.

Taking the cylindrical float of the floating fence of a floating litter collection device as the research object, based on the shallow immersion characteristics of the cylindrical float, the Morison equation is modified, and the interaction between regular waves and the partially immersed horizontal cylindrical float is discussed in combination with scale model test. The results show that the modified Morison equation can accurately predict the wave force of the horizontal cylindrical float and reveal the influence of amplitude, immersion depth and period on the wave force of the cylindrical float. For partially immersed cylindrical floats, the wave force increases with the increase in wave height and decays with the increase in period. The positive value distribution of the wave force is larger than that of the negative direction, and the difference between the positive and negative directions is mainly affected by the immersion depth.

In this study, probabilistic models for the wave- and lifting forces were derived directly from long-term in-situ wave data embedding the Korean marine environment characteristics varying from sea to sea based on the Three-Parameter Weibull distribution. Korean marine environment characteristics varying from sea to sea carved out their presence on the probability coefficients of probabilistic models for wave- and lifting forces. Energetic wave conditions along the southern coast of Korea distinguish themselves from the others with a relatively large scale coefficient, small location coefficient, and shape coefficient around 1.3. On the other hand, mild marine environment along the western coast has a small variability, leading to small scale-coefficient, large location coefficient and shape coefficient around 2.0. In the sea off Mokpo, near the boundary between the South- and West Seas, marine environment was characterized by small scale-coefficient, large location coefficient, and shape coefficient around 1.2, implying that marine environments characteristics of the South-and West Sea coexist in the sea off Mokpo.

The principle of self clamping friction clutch is presented in this paper and the transmitted torque capacity is also calculated. In order to enlarge the friction force, a part of rotating force of driving side is converted to normal force of friction materials by clamping arm. The increased normal force of friction materials assures the large friction force and the transmitted torque capacity of clutch becomes large. The self clamping friction clutch is adopted in the tube type air pressure clutch and the condition of stability is investigated. It is proven that the inclined angle of clamping arm and the friction factor of friction materials are the essential elements in stability and torque capacity of self clamping friction clutch. The transmitted torque capacity of self clamping friction clutch is compared with air pressure clutch. The normal force of friction lining is magnified by 1/(1-k) and the transmitted torque capacity is also magnified with same proportion comparing with air pressure clutch. The larger the friction factor of friction lining, the larger the magnification factor. The longer the clamping arm, the smaller the magnification factor. It must be also noted that the value of k=${\mu}Y/X$ is the criterion of stability. If the value of k=${\mu}Y/X$ is greater than or equal to 1, the self clamping friction clutch is unstable and it can not be used as clutch.

Recent accidents of crude oil tankers have resulted in sinking, grounding of vessels and significant levels of marine pollution. Therefore, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strengthening the regulations of ship maneuvering performance in MSC 137. The evaluation of maneuvering performance can be made at the early design stage; it can be investigated numerically or experimentally. The main objective of this paper was to investigate the maneuvering performance of a VLCC due to the increase of rudder force at an early design stage for low speed in shallow water conditions. It was simulated in various operating condition such as deep sea, shallow water, design speed and low speed by using the numerical maneuvering simulation model, developed using MMG maneuvering motion equation and KVLCC 2 (SIMMAN 2008 workshop). The effect of increasing the rudder force can be evaluated by using numerical simulation of turning test and ZIG-ZAG test. The research showed that, increasing the rudder force of a VLCC was more effective on improving the turning ability than improving the course changing ability especially. The improvement of turning ability by the rudder force increasing is most effective when the ship is sailing in shallow water at low forward speed.
In this paper, calculation of towing force required to tow the ship and experiments to verify its appropriacy are discussed. Friction, wind and wave-making resistance of vessel are considered to calculate towing force of specified vessel. Propeller resistance is also reflected and it is assumed that the propellers are locked. Node analysis to estimate additional resistance on towline is applied. Total towing force could be obtained by adding the ship's resistance and towline resistance. Experiments with training ship SAE YU DAL was executed to check the effectiveness of calculation methods and some comparison between experiments and calculation results was also done. From the comparative analysis, we confirmed that towing speed is primary terms in the calculation of towing force and propeller resistance is a major elements of ship's resistance with the increasing of towing speed. We can see that additional resistance induced by yawing of ship during towing have to be considered for total tow resistance.

A stranded ship means a ship which is stuck on a rock or a seabed, and cannot move by itself. The lightening plan is required to refloat the stranded ship. For this, we have to understand the forces and moments acting on the ship, which is composed of the gravity, buoyancy, and reaction force due to the touched area below the ship. This study defines those forces and moments, and proposed the calculation method to find the posture based on the static equilibrium. It is divided by two steps. In the first step, the magnitude and position of the reaction force are obtained based on the known information such as initial trim angle and draft of the ship. In the second step, the reaction force and the posture is calculated due to the three cases such as addition, reduction, and movement of the cargo. It is applied to three examples in order to calculate the reaction force, and the trim angle due to changes of the cargo. As a results, we successfully obtain the magnitudes and positions of forces acting on the stranded ship and to check the posture of the stranded ship.

In this study, we have conducted a work on homogenizer development which is operated by high shearing force generated by stator and rotor inside it. To investigate the performance for homogenization and atomization of homogenizer, Bunker-C (IFO 380 cSt) was used as a fuel for experiment. Pre-treatment of bunker-C was carried out with homogenizer developed in this study. Oil purifier was used to investigate effect of oil sludge reduction after pre-treatment. Experimental result showed that the amount of sludge of fuel oil after pre-treatment with homogenizer has decreased by 13 %. To confirm combustion efficiency, Bunker-C which have pre-treatment with homogenizer and purified after are burned in boiler system. The result showed that CO concentration in exhaust gas was decreased. These results mean that if the homogenizer which is developed in this study for marine fuel oil is applied on real vessels, oil costs and operating costs can be reduced.

Recently, the size of container ships has been progressively increasing, and much attention is required for safe navigation in shallow areas such as coastal waters and ports due to increases in draft. It is necessary to understand the characteristics of ship motion not only in still waters but also with waves. Especially in shallow regions, squat due to the vertical movement of the ship can be an important evaluation factor for the safe navigation, and wave drift force acting in the horizontal direction can have a great influence on the maneuverability of a ship. In this study, a numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics has been performed for the wave exciting force acting in the vertical direction and the wave drift force acting in the horizontal direction for a very large container vessel sailing in shallow zone. As a result, it was found that total resistance in still waters greatly increased in shallow water. Wave drift force was shown to decrease given longer wavelengths regardless of water depth. It was observed that the wave exciting force in shallow water was considerably larger than at other water depths. As wave height against the central part of the ship lowered, the aft side rose.
