  • Concrete structures in the marine environment often deteriorate in the early stage of their service life because of contact with various aggressive conditions. In recent years, the study on the concrete in the marine environment are carried out to increase their service life. In this experimental study, the concrete specimens were prepared with various adding contents of inorganic antifouling agent$(0\~3.0wt\%)$ composed to some fluosilicate solution. For evaluatin of the physical and chemical properties of concretes containing inorganic antifouling agent, various tests such as setting time, slump loss, compressive strength, water absorption rate, freezing and thawing resistance and SEM micrographs of concrete, were conducted. As the results, physical and chemical properties of concretes were improved with an adding of inorganic antifouling agent. From the results of various tests, the optimal adding contents of antifouling agent was $1.0wt\%$.

  • Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are to salts and chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely affect the durability of concrete structures. the objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors, etc. A two-year verification test on various corrosion protection system has been doing in the laboratory. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 63 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include microcell corrosion current.

  • Chloride attack and carbonation induced corrosion of reinforcement are those of the main factors which cause the deterioration of concrete structures. The objective of this study is to suggest an analytic model for the prediction of chloride penetration into carbonated concrete, in order to make up for the current codes. Carbonation depth model considering the moisture effect is validated by being compared with the test data and the analytic model on chloride penetration into carbonated concrete is developed. Finally, the corrosion-initiation time has been predicted by the present model, being compared with that by the current code equation. The comparison shows that the current code equation can underestimate the chloride penetration into carbonated concrete in marine atmospheric conditions.

  • This study investigates the quality control and the finishability improvement properties of durable marine concrete under construct in Geo-je Ka-duk fixed link project. Below $3.5\times10^{-12}m^2/s$ chloride migration coefficient and above 40MPa compressive strength are required for the caisson structure concrete. The quality control was performed from physical-chemical analysis of raw materials to concrete test. Also, the efficiency of vibration type and action interval were tested to remove the entrapped air on the faced to form. And kinds of form and remolding agent were also tested. This paper aim to enhance the practical use of high performance concrete to construction field.

  • Recently many concrete structures have been deteriorated due to the corrosion of reinforcing steel caused by chloride attack. The chloride attack causes very rapid and serious deterioration. Therefore, It is necessary for highly reliable method to stop the corrosion. Especially, on damaged concrete, it is difficult to stop the progress of steel corrosion that has already occured in concrete. The indirect method of corrosion protection such as eliminating corrosion factors by coating would be hard to be expected for complete stop of corrosion. In this paper, we applied the cathodic protection to chloride attacked marine concrete structures and verified the effect in addition to application of cathodic protection.

  • Ka-Hwa highway bridge, located in a corrosive marine environment, had been examined the current condition of reinforcement corrosion in concrete throughout half-cell potentials, electrical resistivity, chloride contamination of concrete, and visual observation. According to the test, the chloride corrosion reinforced concrete structure is not only the protecting film around the reinforcement is deteriorated but also corrosion activity develops, for example, delamination areas of concrete. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of Ka-Hwa highway bridge damaged by chlodide attack and to present the results of repair of Ka-Hwa highway concrete bridge in domestic marine environment.

  • Recently, much attention has focused on the study of eco-friendly concrete using recycled by-products for protecting marine ecosystem and durability of concrete exposed to marine condition. This study evaluated the durabilities of 4 different type of concrete mixtures(Control, Marine, Porous, New slag) with the seawater resistance by marine environment exposure experiment and freeze-thaw resistance, resistance to chloride ion penetration considering severe deterioration environment. In this study, we conducted seawater resistance using compressive strength according to the age(7/28/56 days) of specimen and curing conditions(standard(fresh water), tidal, immersion, artificial seawater). The results show that compressive strength of concrete exposed to marine environment exposure condition was lower than those of the standard curing condition. Also, compressive strength of New slag using eco-friendly materials for protecting marine ecosystem was lower than those of other concretes, there is need to improve the performance of New slag. The results for freeze-thaw resistance showed that all mixtures have excellent, but the Porous and New slag were lower than others. Also, the more improved resistance to chloride ion penetration than those of the Marine was measured in the New slag regardless of curing condition.

  • The corrosion of steel in concrete is significant in marine environment. Marine bridges are readily deteriorated due to the exposure to marine environment. Salt damage is one of the most detrimental causes to concrete bridges and port structures. Especially, the splash and tidal zones around water line are comparatively important in terms of safety and life-time point of view. During the last several decades, cathodic protection (cp) has been commonly accepted as an effective technique for corrosion control in concrete structures. Zn-mesh sacrificial anode has been recently developed and started to apply to the bridge column cp in marine condition. The detailed parameters regarding Zn-mesh cp technique, however, have not well understood. This study is to investigate how much Zn-mesh cp influences along the concrete column at elevated temperature. About 100cm column specimens with eight of 10cm segment rebars have been used to measure the variation of cp potential with the distance from Zn-mesh anode at both 10$^{\circ}$C and 40$^{\circ}$C in natural seawater. The cp potential change and current diminishment along the column specimens have been discussed for the optimum design of cp by Zn-mesh sacrificial anode

  • Marine bridges are readily deteriorated due to the exposure to marine environment. The concrete deterioration occurred by corrosion of steel in concrete is mainly relevant to chloride in seawater. Chloride ions penetrate through porous concrete, and then reach to the reinforcing steel, and finally corroded them. The corrosion by-products(rusts) increase the volume as much as 6 to 10 times of origin steel. this creates expanding pressure and tensile stress, which cause the structures cracking and spalling. Sometimes the rebar corrosion is accelerated, and then collapsed catastrophically. In order to prevent corrosion damage, it is important to understand well regarding the reason of concrete corrosion, the quantification of its damage, and protection method/system to stop or to mitigate the corrosion. In this study, slab specimens were fabricated to evaluate the effect of cathodic protection which was simulated to marine bridges, and/or port structures. Zn-mesh sacrificial anode has been applied as a chathodic protection system and accelerated test conditions, i.e. temperature and salt concentration have been used in this study.
