  • The characteristics of thermal instabilities of natural convection in a horizontal fluid layer bounded below by a rigid plate and above by an interface with a passive gas is presented. The critical Grashof number decreases as the surface tension gradient effect (Marangoni effect) at the interface increases and the flow remains unstable for a critical Marangoni number depending on Prandtl numbers. These results are in substantial agreement with those of Smith and Davis.

  • The flow of liquids submerged with nanoparticles is of significance to industrial applications, specifically in nuclear reactors and the cooling of nuclear systems to improve energy efficiency. The application of nanofluids in water-cooled nuclear systems can result in a significant improvement of their economic performance and/or safety margins. Therefore, in this paper, Marangoni thermal convective boundary layer dusty nanoliquid flow across a flat surface in the presence of solar radiation is studied. A two phase dusty liquid model is considered. Unlike classical temperature-dependent heat source effects, an exponential space-dependent heat source aspect is considered. Stretching variables are utilized to transform the prevailing partial differential system into a nonlinear ordinary differential system, which is then solved numerically via the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg approach coupled with a shooting technique. The roles of physical parameters are focused in momentum and heat transport distributions. Graphical illustrations are also used to consider local and average Nusselt numbers. We examined the results under both linear and quadratic variation of the surface temperature. Our simulations established that the impact of Marangoni flow is useful for an enhancement of the heat transfer rate.

자유표면변형을 고려한 저에너지밀도 및 고에너지밀도 레이저 용접공정 통합 해석 (A Unified Analysis of Low-Power and High-Power Density Laser Welding Processes with Evolution of Free Surface)

  • In this study, a unified numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool and key-hole geometry during low-power and high-power density laser welding. Unsteady phase-change heat transfer and fluid flow with the surface tension are examined. The one-dimensional vaporization model is introduced to model the overheated surface temperature and recoil pressure during high-power density laser welding. It is shown that Marangoni convection in the weld pool is dominant at low-power density laser welding, and the keyhole with thin liquid layer and the hump are visible at high-power density laser welding. It is also shown that the transition from conduction welding to penetration welding fur iron plate exists when the laser power density is about $10^6W/Cm^2$.

  • Convective instability driven by surface tension is analyzed in an initially quiescent water absorbing ammonia gas using the linear stability theory. The propagation theory is adapated to find the critical conditions of the onset of solutal Maragoni convection. In this theory, the solutal penetration depth is chosen as the length scale factor. The results show that the liquid layer becomes more stable with decreasing the Schmidt number It is interesting that for a smaller Biot number than 100, the system becomes stable with decreasing Bi but for a larger Bi, it becomes unstable with decreasing Bi.

  • Recently the Marangoni convention is supposed to be an important phenomenon that significantly affects the solidification. For understanding the Marangoni convection mechanism, visualizing the convention phenomenon of molten tin with ultrasonic has been conducted. This paper reports developing a tracer material of micro metal balloon that is used in the molten system. We have succeeded in coating the surface of Shirasu-ballons with nickel by plating process. The obtained metal balloon is spherical and some characterizations were conducted.

  • EBFZM( Electron Beam Floating Zone Melting ) 법을 이용하여 니오븀에서의 침입형불순물 정련기구, 단결정 성장기구 및 유동현상을 연구하였다. EBFZM 은 산소와 질소의 제거에 효과적이었고,탄소의 경우 유확산펌프에서의 Backstream으로 인하여 약간 증가하는 경향성을 보였다. 원소재에 집합조직이 존재 하는 경우, EBFZM을 시행한 후의 결정성장 방위가 원소재의 집합조직과 일치하였으며,이로부터 2차 재결정에 의한 단결정 성장기구를 제안하였다. 또한,용 응대의 유동현상을 연구하여 낮은 Prandtl수인 니오븀에서도 Marangoni대류가 존재하여 결정내부의 striation을 유발시키고 산소와 질소에 대한 정련효과를 증대시킴을 밝혔다.

수직관 흡수기의 물질전달에 미치는 계면활성제의 영향 (Influence of Surfactant on Mass Transfer of Vertical Absorber)

  • This study was concerned with the enhancement of mass transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical inner tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, groove tube, corrugate tube and inserted spring tubes. The additive concentration of normal octyl alcohol as a surfactant is about 0.08mass%. The Sherwood number was measured as a function of film Reynolds number 20~200. The experimental results were compared with those which use no surfactant. The enhancement of mass transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is proved for each testing tube Especially, it is clarified that the tube with the spring has the highest enhancement effect. A correlation of the experimental mass transfer data for the bare, groove, corrugate and insert spring tubes results expressed as the form of Sh=cㆍ Re$_{f}$ $^{n}$ .

Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an inserted spring has the highest enhancement effect.
