  • SCM(Supply Chain Management) is a new approach to satisfy customers via an integrated management for the whole business processes of the manufacturing from the raw material procurement to the product or service delivery to customers. Typically the semiconductor industry is the one whose supply chain network is distributed all over the world, and its manufacturing process has the particular characteristics which has to be considered in the modeling of supply chain. In this paper we suggest the push and pull type supply chain models based on the manufacturing characteristics and their mathematical formulation for the semiconductor industry. Push supply chain model pursuits the high throughput and the balance of the WIP flow, and pull supply chain model does to minimize the total cost of order-based manufacturing, distribution and transportation process in order to meet customer's request appropriately.

  • Digital Manufacturing is a technology to facilitate effective product developments and agile productions by digital environments representing the physical and logical schema and the behavior of real manufacturing system including manufacturing resources, processes and products. A digital factory as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential for successful applications of this technology. In this research, we constructed a sophisticated digital factory of an automotive company’ general assembly shop by measuring and 3-D CAD modeling using parametric methods. Specific parameters of each objects were decided by object-oriented schema of the general assembly shop. It is expected that this method is very useful for constructions of a digital factory, and helps to manage diverse information and re-use 3D models.

  • Presented in this paper is a state-of-the-art review of VM(Virtual Manufacturing). To survive on a global competition, manufacturers must shorten the time to market for their products. To achieve this goal, many manufacturers have implmented CIM systems. VM is a new direction in the CIM system development having emphasis on enhancing the decision-making capability. VM can be defined an integrated, synthetic manufacturing environment exercised to enhance all levels of decision and control. Also, VM is the use of computer models and simulations of manufacturing processes to aid in the design and production of manufactured products. Currently, VP(Virtual Prototyping) and VF(Virtual Factory) are main theme to develop a VM. In this paper, the concept and current status of VP and VF are explained.

  • Elemental powders are used in high energy milling processes for the synthesis of new compounds. The low temperature solid state reactions during milling in inert gas atmosphere may result in intermetallic phases, carbides, nitrides or silicides with a nanocrystalline structure. To obtain dense materials from the powders a pressure assisted densification is necessary. On the other side the defect-rich microstructure can be used for activated sintering of elemental powder mixtures to obtain dense bodies by pressureless sintering. Results are discussed for nanocrystalline cermet systems and for the sintering of aluminides and silicides.

  • One of the most common communication mechanisms to describe a situation or a process is a story written as an ordered sequence of events or activities. For example, a shop floor supervisor may present the operations of his manufacturing system by describing the processes of manunfacturing a product in his shop. Although IDEF3 is one of the most commonly used methods for describing a business process, but it is not common for a manufacturing process. In this study, we tried to apply IDEF3 for describing a manufacturing process. Problems and suggestions such as selection probability, programmable process modeling, manufacturing resource model were presented.

  • Drilling file is medical mini-drill which is made of Ni-Ti material and has tapered shape. It's for removing teeth nervine which helps the endodontic treatment. All files, saled at domestic market, are imported from U.S. and Europe. Also they have low manufacturing efficiency and high price because it is made by universal 5 axis CNC grinding machine. To solve these problem, 3 axis CNC table, controllable tilting angle spindle and helix angle moving table are devised. To confirm divised CNC grinding machine's manufacturing accuracy, conveying amount and finish product size measurement expreiment has been practiced. Also to automate all manufacturing processes, automatic mechanism is designed.

  • As the market and the organizations of an enterprise expand globally, the rapid and accurate communication gets more important for product manufacturing. The manufacturing information flow among the designers, the process planners and the shop floors is characterized and modelled. Its methods are constructed using distributed objects. Their introduction to the network-based CAPP system offers speed and safety for the system and makes the reconstruction and distribution of the application programs easy. The manufacturing processes are generated based on the feature information of a designed part, then the manufacturing resources are selected using the process planning logic which is implemented by distributed objects. The databases and distributed objects are integrated under the recent internet environments. The developed system makes it possible to manipulate and to transfer the process planning and manufacturing data everywhere in the world.

  • Virtual Manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective development and agile production of products via computer models representing physical and logical schema and the behavior of the real manufacturing systems. For the successful application of this technology, a virtual plant as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential. We propose a series of systematic approaches and effective methods for construction and operation of a virtual plant in this paper, such as a 3-D CAD modeling, cell and line simulations and databases. We developed key technologies for measuring and 3-D CAD modeling of many equipments, facilities and structures of the buildings. In order to study the benefit of virtual manufacturing, we constructed a sophisticated virtual plant model of a Korean automotive company's body shop, and conducted precise simulations of unit cell, lines and the whole plant. We could obtain the benefit of savings in time and cost in many manufacturing preparation activities in the new car development processes.

  • The objective of manufacturing knowledge sharing platform is to convert the production experience like a worker's know-how into quantitative values, to construct database of the process technologies and to share the technologies systematically via web portal service. In addition, the knowledge sharing platform contains the total production processes of automobile and mobile products such as information of experts, facilities, and cutting-edge R&D outputs. Automobile, telecommunication mobile, and semiconductors account for a large amount of Korea's export industry rate. These industries need production technology which is a result of converting worker's know-how and R&D. Manufacturing knowledge portal aims to enable transforming production experience such as worker's know-how into standardized form for constructing database and sharing technologies systematically. Manufacturing knowledge portal can contribute to small and mid-sized manufacturing companies with further improvements.

  • Recent industrial efforts are directed toward the development of CIM(Computer integrated Manufacturing) system. It is often the case that the analysis of the system dynamic behaviour is overlooked, even if it is important for both the economic justification and system performance evaluation. The main purpose of this study is to present a n approach of system performance evaluation for PCB(Printed Circuit Board) manufacturing, especially the inner layer manufacturing processes, using simulation. The general overview of the PCB manufacturing environment has first been discussed. Then a computer simulation program which can consider the diverse dynamic environmental changes has been developed. Extensive system analyses have been performed based on the program developed and the three measures proposed. The results obtained in this study provide valuable guidelines for practical concerns and some recommendations for future extensions.
