  • This study aims to examine the effects of industrial clustering and manufacturing flexibility on innovation capability and operational performance. This study follow a survey method to collect data pertaining to the phenomena of industrial clustering, manufacturing flexibility, innovation capability, and operational performance by utilizing a single respondent design. A total of 124 Indonesian manufacturing SMEs are taken to test the proposed theoretical model by utilizing covariance-based structural equations modeling approach. It was found that both industrial clustering and manufacturing flexibility was positively associated with operational performance and innovation capability as well. In addition, innovation capability may account for the effects of industrial clustering and manufacturing flexibility on operational performance. This implies that manufacturing SMEs have to reorient their production and operation perspectives, including agglomerate with other similar or related SMEs to develop and utilize their own resources. The SMEs also need to possess some degree of manufacturing flexibility in respond to the uncertain environment and market changes. In addition, the SMEs should put a greater emphasize to use industrial cluster and manufacturing flexibility benefits to generate innovation capability to achieve high performance.

  • In this paper, we investigated the relationship between the variables related to manufacturing environment and industrial accident. Also we wish to analyze how much these variables influence in production result of company: the manufacturing performances such as production quantity, quality, cost and delivery. For this investigation, we collected the real data from 16 small/medium-sized manufacturing companies by performing a questionnaire survey and one-site interview with the workers. Sixteen companies were made up of the following four industries: metal processing, machinery manufacturing, chemical products manufacturing and electronic products manufacturing, The data analysis was made using SPSS PC+. Based on the result of the analysis, we came to the conclusion that most of variables related to manufacturing environment and industrial safety were connecting with industrial accident occurrence and also influenced in manufacturing performance.

  • Over 40 years, the domestic manufacturing industry of Korea played the vital role in creating national wealth, employment and innovation in its economy. In 2011, industrial products made up 99.7 percent of exports, and formed 31.2 percent of GDP. Given those facts, the research of manufacturing systems engineering for higher manufacturing efficiency and its industrial applications have been essential for Korea's economic growth. In this paper, for celebrating the 40th anniversary of the foundation of Korea institute of industrial engineers (KIIE), the research results and its industrial applications of KIIE are reviewed and summarized in the area of manufacturing systems engineering over past 40 years. Directions of future manufacturing system and the role of industrial engineers for our continuous economic growth are also mentioned.

  • Although manufacturing cost is a major part of profit in a company, it is difficult to be calculated by an analytic method. Besides, the manufacturing cost gained by simple financial structure dose not have an important meaning in market place. Therefore, an analytic method of computing the manufacturing cost is very necessary in manufacturing system. In this study, we suggested the direct cost analysis model which are able to measure accurate cost analysis of product in manufacturing system. The direct cost analysis model is made up of directly used expenditure for unit product. Also, system performances are put in the manufacturing cost analysis model so that it could be possible to analyze the change of manufacturing cost as system performances change. At the end of this paper, it verifies its relevancy and practicality of the suggested direct cost analysis model through the case study, using real data for direct labor cost.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the asbestos exposure levels and variations in textile, brake lining manufacturing and slate manufacturing industries. For this study, fifteen plants of brake lining manufacturing industry, 7 plants of textile industry, and 2 plants of slate manufacturing industry were selected and surveyed. Geometric means (GMs) of airborne asbestos concentrations in textile, brake lining manufacturing, and slate manufacturing industries were 1.42 f/cc(0.07-6.1O f/cc), 0.19 f/cc(<0.01-2.67 f/cc) and 0.08 f/cc(0.02-0.67 f/cc), respectively. In textile industry overall GMs of airborne asbestos concentrations in plants with less than 50 workers and in plants with more than 50 workers were 1.60 f/cc and 0.3 f/cc, respectively. Therefore, the size of plant showed some difference in the airborne asbestos concentrations. Three out of 7(42.9%) exceed the Korean standard, 2 f/cc, and every plant exceed the USA standard, 0.2 f/cc of the OSHA-Permissible Exposure Level(OSHA-PEL). Especially, one plant showed the highest average concentration of 2.87 f/cc. In brake lining manufacturing industry, the plants with less than 50 workers showed 0.22 f/cc. The plants with more than 50 workers showed 0.18 f/cc. All plants showed the exposure level below the Korean standard. Five of 15 (33.3%) were above the OSHA-PEL. One plant showed the highest average concentraton of 0.84 f/cc. In slate manufacturing industry, the average exposure level was 0.08 f/cc, and all of the plants were below the Korean standard and the OSHA-PEL.

  • In this paper, we investigated the relationship between the variables of the industrial accident factors and the manufacturing performances such as production quantity, quality, cost, and delivery. For this investigation, we collected the real data from 30 small/medium-sized manufacturing industries by performing a questionnaire survey and a on-site inter-view with the workers. Thirty industries were made up of 10 from each of the following three industries: metal processing, machinery manufacturing, and chemical products manufacturing. The data analysis was made using SPSS PC+. Based on the result of the analysis, we came to the tentative conclusion that only two variables such as work skill and load affected all four manufacturing performances and the rest of them two or three performances.

  • The needs for manufacturing decisions to be made in a strategic context has been recognized for many years. A manufacturing strategy is made up of many decisions and each of these needs to be considered in the strategic context. Currently in many industrial componies, starategic developments are predominantly based on corporate marketing decisions. Therefore, the attention of manufacturing managers focused primarily upon the day-to-day part of their task. This study suggests a connection scheme between corporate and manufacturing strategy. The essencial role of manufacturing manager is to make compony competitive.
