Fluid mixing is ubiquitous and essential in many natural and industrial systems. Understanding the mixing processes that occur in these diverse system is essential for predicting many aspects of practical importance. The objective of this study is to perform the experimental and numerical investigation of the flow and mixing in a static mixer. Three different types of mixing elements, Sulzer, SSM and PPM were used. Glycerin and hydraulic oil were used as mixing fluids. Pressure drop was measured using a manometer.
This study describes an oscillometric-based blood pressure measuring algorithm by detecting turning points of oscillation signal from digitally filtered cuff signals of an automatic sphygmomanometer. The blood pressure measuring algorithm uses a characteristic ratios method from the turning points. The accurate values of the systolic/diastolic blood presures(SBP/DBP) are calculated using the peaks in the ranges of characteristic ratios. Performances of the proposed algorithm and four automatic sphygmomanometers are compared with the mercury manometer(manual type sphygmomanometer), regarding the SBP and DBP values of manual sphygmomanometer as the reference values. The performance test showed the proposed algorithm revealed the best results in errors and a statistical analysis. Therefore this algorithm can be usable in any automatic sphygmomanometers.ssure states. This may be compromising results for subject-independent sensibility evaluation using EEG signal.
In this study, direct code coupling, in which two codes share a single flow field, was conducted using 3-dimensional high resolution thermal hydraulics code, CUPID and 1-dimensional system analysis code, MARS. This approach provide the merit to use versatile capability of MARS for nuclear power plants and 3-dimensional T/H analysis capability of CUPID. Numerical Method to directly couple CUPID and MARS was described in this paper. The straight flow and manometer flow oscillation were calculated to verify conservation of coupled CUPID/MARS code in mass, momentum, and energy. This verification calculations indicates that the CUPID/MARS is coupled appropriately in numerical aspect and the coupled code can be applied to nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics after validation against integral transient experiments.
A motionless mixer consists of a straight pipe or transfer tube containing the mixing elements that are used to cut, fold, twist, and re-combine the mixing fluid. The number of elements and their shape required in any application depend on the complexity of the mixing process. The objectives of this study are to develop new motionless mixers and to perform the experimental investigation of pressure drop in order to evaluate the performance of the new ones. Glycerin is used as a mixing fluid. Pressure drop is measured using a hydraulic manometer and correlations of friction factor are proposed as a function of Re. The friction factors of Sulzer SMX mixer are in qualitative good agreement with the published data. On the average, the friction factors of SSC and YNU mixers are about 36% lower than and 6% higher than that of the Sulzer one.

Fluid mixing is ubiquitous and essential in many natural and industrial systems. Understanding the mixing processes that occur in these diverse systems is essential for predicting many aspects of practical importance. The objective of this study was to develop a new mixing element and to perform the experimental investigation of flow and mixing in a static mixer that is equipped the new element and the others. Glycerin and gear oil were used as mixing fluids. Pressure drops across the static mixer elements of different designs and different numbers were measured using a hydraulic manometer The axial and cross-sectional views of tracer mixing were photographed using a digital camera. The pressure drops of SSM mixer were about 20% less than that of Sulzer mixer whereas the mixing performance of SSM mixer was not so good as that of Sulzer mixer
To study the effect of IAA on the growth of Chlorella, the alage wre cultured on the media for six days by bubbling $_{2}$ enriched air under 10K lux at 20-$25^{\circ}C$. The culture media were made by adding a concentration of $10^{-3}$M, $10^{-4}$M, and 0M(as a control) IAA to the standard media. During the period of culture, Chlorella was smapled for the given time of interval and photosynthetic and respiratory activities were measured by Warburg manometer and change of chemical components of Chlorella was determined by spectrophotometry after the Chlorella cell was fractionated by Schmidt-Thannhauser method. 1) Photosynthetic and respiratory activities were enhanced by IAA ; especially the enhancement of respiratory activity was so remarkable. 2) As to the chemical components of Chlorella, carbohydrates and amino acids were reduced a little but phosphate, RNA, DNA, and protein were increased by $10^{-3}$M IAA ; the increase of RNA, in particular, was noticable. 3) The above results suggest that the enhancement of growth of Chlorella, by IAA and ATP induced by respiratory activity accelerated with IAA enhanced RNA synthesis, resulting in an increase of protein synthesis.
The cutting thickness of ultra-precision machining is generally very small, only a few micrometer or even down to the order of a flew manometer. In such case, a basic understanding of the mechanism on the micro-machining process is necessary to produce a high quality surface. When machining at very small depths of cut, metal flow near a rounded tool edge become important. In this paper a finite element analysis is presented to calculate the stagnation point on the tool edge or critical depth of cut below which no cutting occurs. From the simulation, the effects of the cutting speed on the critical depths of cut were calculated and discussed. Also the transition of the stagnation point according to the increase of the depths of cut was observed.
As pipelines are often used to transport gas, oil, water and oil products, there are more than one pipeline installed in the offshore field. The size and space of pipelines are various depending on the design specifications. The pipelines are to be designed and installed to secure the stability to external loads during the installation and operation period. The flow patterns are very complex around the pipelines being dependent on incoming flow velocity, pipelines size and space. To investigate the flow patterns, number of experiment are conducted with visualization equipment in a circulating water channel. The flow motion and trajectory were recorded from the laser reflected particles by camera. From the experiment the flow patterns around spaced pipelines were obtained. Also pressure gradient was measured by mano-meter to estimate the hydrodynamic forces on the behind pipeline. The results show that the various sizes and spaces can be affected in the estimation of external load. The complex flow patterns and pressure gradients can be effectively used in the understanding of flow motion and pressure gradient.
This study is to develop a system of electric power generation utilizing the wind resources available in the domestic wind environment. We tested drag-type vortical wind turbine models, which have two different types of blades: a flat plate and circular arc shape. Through a performance test, conditions of maximum rotational speed were found by measuring the rpm of wind turbine. The rotational speed was measured by a tachometer in a wind tunnel and the tunnel wind speed was by using a pilot-static tube and a micro manometer. The performance test for a prototype was accomplished by calculating power, power coefficient, torque coefficient from the measurement of torque and rpm by a dynamometer controller From the measurements for miniature turbine models with two different blades, the circular arc shape was found to Produce a maximum rotational speed for the same wind velocity condition. Based on this result, the prototype with the circular arc blade was made and tested. We found that it produces 500W at the wind velocity of 10.8 m/s and the power coefficient was 20%.
An experimental study was peformed to measure the viscosity of microencapsulated PCM slurries as the functions of its concentration and temperature, and also influence to its fluid dynamics. For the viscosity measurement, a rotary type viscometer, which was equipped with temperature control system, was adopted. The slurry was mixed with water and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as a surfactant by which its suspended particles were dispersed well without the segregation of particles during the experiment. The viscosity was increased as the concentration of MicroPCM particle added. The surfactant increased 5% of the viscosity over the working fluid without particles. Experiments were proceeded by changing parameters such as PCM particles'concentration as well as the temperature of working fluid. As a result, a model to the functions of temperature for the working fluid and its particle concentration is proposed. The proposed model, for which its standard deviation shows 0.8068, is agreed well with the reference's data. The pressure drop was measured by U-tube manometer, and then the friction factor was obtained. It was noted that the pressure drop was not influenced by the state of PCM phase, that is solid or liquid in its core materials at their same concentration. On the other hand, it was described that the pressure drop of the slurry was much increased over the working fluid without particles. A friction factor was placed on a straight line in all working fluids of the laminar flow regardless of existing particles as we expected.
