  • Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) has attracted a great deal of attention in environmental industries due to renewable resources, processability, excellent physical properties and logging regulations for application to housing units and engineering construction materials. In this study, commercial WPCs were prepared by using a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The effect of three main factors such as wood flour contents, coupling agent concentrations and pre-treatment of wood flour on the properties of WPCs was extensively investigated. It was found that tensile strength and thermal stability were decreased with increasing wood flour contents whereas the water absorption was increased. Addition of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) into WPC exhibited better physical properties. On the contrary, the water absorption was slightly decreased with PP-g-MA. Finally the sample, which was prepared with pre-treated wood flour, represented the highest tensile strength. However, the water absorption of the sample was increased due to the transition of crystalline structure of cellulose.

  • PA66/EPDM/PP-g-MA and PA66/EPDM-g-MA/PP-g-MA composites were manufactured by a modular intermeshing twin screw extruder for enhanced low temperature impact resistance with different content of PP-g-MA. The results showed that composite containing 90 wt% of PA66, 8 wt% of EPDM-g-MA, and 2 wt% of PP-g-MA has a optimum value in the thermal and mechanical properties. The characteristics of the composites were analyzed by TGA, DSC, and SEM. From above results, we established that the low interfacial strength and the impact resistance at low temperature shown in a pre-existing PP/EPDM composite were enhanced by grafting with compatibilizer such as maleic anhydride. These results show the possibility of local manufacturing process and cost down with optimum screw configuration for best mixing quality in the twin screw extruder.

  • In this study, binary polyamide 6,6(PA 6,6)/ethylene-propylene rubber(EPM) or EPM-g-maleic anhydride(EPM-g-MA) blends and ternary PA 6,6/EPM/EPM-g-MA blends with various elastomer content were prepared in order to investigate the degree of influence of elastomer content and average particle size, morphology, and distribution of dispersed elastomer on mechanical and thermal properties of blends. According to the results, notched Izod impact strength and relative crystallinity of binary blends modified with EPM-g-MA as well as average particle size and distribution of dispersed elastomer in such blends were more improved than those of binary blends modified with EPM. Notched Izod impact strength of blend whose composition ratio(wt % ) was 70:30(PA 6,6 : EPM-g-MA) was the highest among the binary PA 6,6/EPM-g-MA blends. The impact strength was increased by 25 times and its relative crystallinity was increased by 7 times when compared with those of polyamide 6,6. In the case of ternary PA 6,6/EPM/EPM-g-MA blend of which composition ratio was 70:15:15(PA 6,6:EPM:EPM-g-MA), the elastomer was finely distributed with the average particle size of $0.56{\mu}m$. The Izod impact strength of this blend was the highest of all blends prepared with different elastomer content.

  • Clay-loaded polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites were fabricated via melt-compounding of two molecular weight ($M_w$) PPs (140 and 410 kg/mol) and octadecylammine-treated clay (C18MMT), with the assistance of maleic anhydride-grafted PP(PP-MAH), respectively, at $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. At both melt-compounding temperatures, the low-$M_w$ PP tends to easily diffuse into silicate layers, especially in the presence of the mobile PP-MAH, resulting in a marked increase in silicate layer spacing (above 58 $\AA$), when compared to 27 $\AA$ in the high-$M_w$ PP-based system. Due to relatively lower melt-viscosity of the low-$M_w$ PP-based system, however, there existed quasi-stacked clay aggregates with a thickness of 60~80 nm, while the high-$M_w$ PP-based nanocomposites showed relatively homogeneous dispersion of clays. The different morphologies are mainly related to changes in the viscoelastic properties of PPs, dependent on the processing temperature and their $M_{w}s$. The slight differences in nanocomposites induce discernible crystallization and mechanical behaviors. High-$M_w$ PP-based nanocomposites containing 1~3 wt% C18MMT showed improvement in both tensile strength and modulus, while maintaining the inherent ductility of pure PP.

  • Recently, various investigation of vegetable oil which is extracted from natural resources is being progressed because of its low cost and environmental aspect. However, double bonds in vegetable oil should be substituted to other high reactive functional group due to its low reactivity for synthesizing bio-polymeric materials. ${\alpha}$-eleostearic acid, which is consist of conjugated triene, is the main component of tung oil, and the conjugated triene allows tung oil to have higher reactivity than other vegetable oil. In this study, tung oil is copolymerized with styrene and divinylbenzene to make thermoset resin without any substitution of functional group. Thermal and mechanical properties are measured to investigate the effects of the composition of each monomer on the synthesized thermoset resin. The result shows that the products have only one Tg, which means the synthesized thermoset resins are homogeneous in molecular level. Mechanical properties show that tung oil act as soft segment in the copolymer and make more elastic product. On the other hand, divinylbenzene acts as hard segment and makes more brittle product.

  • Mulching film was produced by LDPE and LLDPE adding biomass byproducts and MA(maleic anhydride), talc/clay/CaO/CaCO3. And also surveyed to tensile strength, elongation, TGA and DSC according to the UV irradiation time. The tensile strength and elongation showed 20 N/cm2 and 5% after UV irradiation 100 hours, and those was nearly 0 N/cm2 and 0% after 200 hours, respectively. TGA of film was showed to peak of polymer itself, and DSC was slightly higher than that of initial value. At the pilot scale test, we were able to see the differentiate of degradation between control and developed film after 12 weeks, and also torn off at several part of mulching film. The degradation of mulching film after growing corn showed similar to a pilot scale test. Above the results, the developed mulching film adding biomass will be to used for agricultural farming.

  • Vaccination with tumor peptide epitopes associated with MHC class I molecules is an attractive approach directed at inducing tumor-specific CTLs. However, challenges remain in improving the therapeutic efficacy of peptide epitope vaccines, including the low immunogenicity of peptide epitopes and insufficient stimulation of innate immune components in vivo. To overcome this, we aimed to develop and test an innovative strategy that elicits potent CTL responses against tumor epitopes. The essential feature of this strategy is vaccination using tumor epitope-loaded nanoparticles (NPs) in combination with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly-IC) and anti-PD1 mAb. Carboxylated NPs were prepared using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and poly(ethylene/maleic anhydride), covalently conjugated with anti-H-2Kb mAbs, and then attached to H-2Kb molecules isolated from the tumor mass (H-2b). Native peptides associated with the H-2Kb molecules of H-2Kb-attached NPs were exchanged with tumor peptide epitopes. Tumor peptide epitope-loaded NPs efficiently induced tumor-specific CTLs when used to immunize tumor-bearing mice as well as normal mice. This activity of the NPs significantly was increased when co-administered with poly-IC. Accordingly, the NPs exerted significant anti-tumor effects in mice implanted with EG7-OVA thymoma or B16-F10 melanoma, and the anti-tumor activity of the NPs was significantly increased when applied in combination with poly-IC. The most potent anti-tumor activity was observed when the NPs were co-administered with both poly-IC and anti-PD1 mAb. Immunization with tumor epitope-loaded NPs in combination with poly-IC and anti-PD1 mAb in tumor-bearing mice can be a powerful means to induce tumor-specific CTLs with therapeutic anti-tumor activity.
