남자간호사의 직장 내 성차별 경험 (Male Nurses' Experiences of Workplace Gender Discrimination)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore male nurses' experiences of gender discrimination at the workplace using qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants responded to a survey using an online link, and were asked to describe their overall experiences by responding to the question "Please freely describe your experiences of workplace gender discrimination". The qualitative data collected from 118 participants were analyzed using Krippendorff's technique. Data collection was caried out from June 11, 2019, to August 3, 2020. Results: Eleven themes and 24 subthemes were extracted from a total of 277 meaningful statements. Male nurses' experiences of workplace gender discrimination, reasons of gender discrimination, and improvement strategies were presented through the key themes. Conclusion: Male nurses experienced workplace gender discrimination from patients, colleagues, and institutions. Furthermore, strategies to improve gender stereotypes and to emphasize the strengths of male nurses are necessary in order to increase the number of male nurses in the female-dominant nursing field and to reduce job turnover. These strategies will help expand the social role of nurses as professionals and improve the work environment and benefits for all nurses.

HisStory in the Feminized Teaching Profession in the Philippines

  • Teaching has become a feminized profession, especially in elementary teaching, in which it is regarded as "women's work." Concerns about the "extinction" of men in the field resulted in calls for male teachers. While studies indicate that there is positive discrimination in favor of men (despite the feminization of teaching), it appears that there are also forms of discrimination that work against them. As such this study explored the challenges of being a male in the feminized profession from the perspective of male teacher candidates. Studies in the field of teacher education in the Philippines mainly focus on curriculum and students' academic achievement, hence an inquiry must be done on the plight of male teachers in a gendered profession. A phenomenological study was employed to look into the realities of six male teacher candidates. Findings show that male teachers are: (1) leadership-destined; (2) conflicted; (3) limited; and (4) devalued. The narrative of male teachers in the Philippine education sector reveals the need to revisit programs and policies in professional development and support. Finally, recommendations are made for teacher education programs to guide teacher candidates' experiences towards a more inclusive profession.

간호사가 지각한 의료체계의 남성중심성 (Sexual Discrimination towards Female Nurses in the Male Dominated Hospital Environment)

  • Female nurses in Korea have historically experienced discrimination on the basis of their gender as part of the traditional society views on woman and as a result of the male dominated hospital environments. This discrimination may interfere with the ability of female nurses to promote the health of their patients. To better understand this bias, we collected and analyzed 16 cases of alleged sexual discrimination reported by female nurses with more than 5 years work experience. The cases were classified into 10 subjects and further into 4 categories: personnel administration, daily working environment, female gender bias, and health care delivery. There were 7 cases (11.3%) of unjust personnel changes consisting of demotion(1), termination(4), and reallocation of position(3). Twenty three (37.1%) of cases related to problems in the daily workplace including biases in communication between female nurses and male physicians(12), daily work(8), and responsibility for adverse outcomes(3). We noted 17 cases (27.4%) of female gender bias as reported by female nurses(7), female physicians(7), and female patients(3). Lastly, there were 15 (24.3%) cases of problems with health care delivery due to sexual discrimination, including enrollment in the health care system(4),and decisions regarding medical care(4). These results suggest that sexual discrimination towards women is pervasive in the Korea hospitals, not only towards female nurses but also towards female physicians and patients. More discriminatory practices in a timely fashion such that better nursing care can be provided to patients and their families.

Discrimination of Synthesized English Vowels by American and Korean Listeners

  • This study explored the discrimination of synthesized English vowel pairs by twenty-seven American and Korean, male and female listeners. The average formant values of nine monophthongs produced by ten American English male speakers were employed to synthesize the vowels. Then, subjects were instructed explicitly to respond to AX discrimination tasks in which the standard vowel was followed by another one with the increment or decrement of the original formant values. The highest and lowest formant values of the same vowel quality were collected and compared to examine patterns of vowel discrimination. Results showed that the American and Korean groups discriminated the vowel pairs almost identically and their center formant frequency values of the high and low boundary fell almost exactly on those of the standards. In addition, the acceptable range of the same vowel quality was similar among the language and gender groups. The acceptable thresholds of each vowel formed oval to maintain perceptual contrast from adjacent vowels. The results suggested that nonnative speakers with high English proficiency could match native speakers' performance in discriminating vowel pairs with a shorter inter-stimulus interval. Pedagogical implications of those findings are discussed.

  • 인간자본론에 의하면 노동자들간의 임금격차는 인간자본 축적량의 차이에 의해 설명될 수 있는데, 인간자본스톡의 정도는 개인의 선택에 의해 결정된다. 그러나 만일 인간자본스톡에 대한 개인의 선택, 즉 인간자본에 대한 투자결정이 차별에서 영향을 받는다고 하면 인간자본스톡에 근거한 남녀간 임금격차의 설명은 편의를 갖게 된다. 대다수 여성의 경우 노동시장참가가 불연속적으로 이루어지므로 이를 예상(기대)하는 여성이 남성에 비하여 인간자본에 대한 투자를 상대적으로 적게 한다면, 남녀 임금격차를 설명하기 위해서 인간자본스톡변수 대신에 기대(expected) 인간자본스톡변수를 사용하는 것이 편의의 발생을 줄이고 더 정확한 분석결과를 얻을 수 있을 것이다.

남성노인의 차별경험이 노인인식 및 노년기 태도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 가족기능과 동년배관계의 매개효과 검증 - (Study on the effects of the male elderly's age discrimination experiences on their perception of the elderly and attitude toward the old age life -Examination of mediation effects of family function and peer relations-)

  • 은퇴 후 사회적 지위와 가족 내 역할에 변화를 겪는 남성노인은 차별경험으로 인해 부정적 노인인식과 노년기 태도를 갖게 될 가능성이 높다. 본 연구는 남성노인의 차별경험이 노인인식과 노년기 태도에 미치는 영향을 파악하고, 가족기능과 동년배관계의 매개효과를 검증하여 사회복지적 개입방안을 찾고자 한다. 조사대상은 서울지역 노인종합복지관을 이용하는 남성노인 215명이며, 매개효과 검증을 위해 구조방정식 모형을 이용한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 남성노인의 차별경험은 노인인식에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 남성노인의 차별경험이 노년기 태도에 미치는 영향은 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 남성노인의 차별경험이 노인인식에 미치는 영향에 있어서 가족기능과 동년배관계가 완전매개효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 남성노인의 차별경험이 노년기 태도에 미치는 영향에 있어서 가족기능과 동년배관계는 부분매개효과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 근본적으로 노인차별을 줄이기 위한 노력이 필요하다는 것과 가족기능과 동년배관계의 강화는 긍정적인 노인인식과 노년기 태도를 갖게 함을 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 노인차별을 줄이기 위한 제도적 접근, 가족기능 강화를 위한 가족상담 프로그램 및 대안가족 제시, 동년배관계 강화를 위한 지역사회 중심의 노인활동 지원이 필요함을 제언하였다.

Multiplex PCR을 이용한 은행나무 수나무 식별용 SCAR 마커 개발 (Development of SCAR Marker for Identifying Male Trees of Ginkgo biloba using Multiplex PCR)

  • 은행나무는 이식성이 좋고 열악한 환경에서도 잘 자라기 때문에 도심 가로수나 조경수로 매우 적합한 수종이다. 은행나무는 암수딴그루 식물로 수나무와 암나무의 생식기관(수꽃과 암꽃)의 비교를 통하여 성을 식별할 수 있으나, 꽃이 달리기까지 약 20년 이상이 필요하다. 가로수용 은행나무는 주로 꽃이 생성되기 이전에 식재되기 때문에 암나무와 수나무 구분 없이 가로수로 식재되어왔다. 가로수로 식재된 암나무에서 열리는 은행나무 열매는 악취를 발산하고 거리 오염을 야기하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 유시에 수나무를 선별하기 위하여 기존에 보고된 수나무 특이 RAPD 변이체의 염기서열을 기반으로 수나무에서만 675 bp의 PCR 산물을 증폭하는 SCAR 마커(SCAR-GBM)를 개발하였다. SCAR-GBM 마커의 우성 마커 특성에 기인한 위음성(false-negative)문제를 해결하고 식별 효율을 향상시키기 위하여 SCAR-GBM 마커와 mtDNA의 atp1 영역을 증폭하는 범용 프라이머를 동시에 적용하는 multiplex PCR을 이용하였다. 그 결과 암나무와 수나무에서 공히 atp1 영역에 해당하는 1,039 bp의 PCR 산물이 증폭되었으며, 수나무에서만 특이적으로 SCAR-GBM 마커가 증폭되었다. 전국 8개 지역에서 채취된 암나무와 수나무 각 80개체에 대한 분석을 통하여 SCAR-GBM 마커와 multiplex PCR 방법의 재현성이 확인되었다.

한의사 직종에 대한 한의대생의 인식 연구 - 성별에 따른 차이를 중심으로 (A Study on Korean Medicine College Students' Perception of Korean Medicine Doctors: Focus on Gender Differences)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate gender differences in the Korean Medical Community. Methods: Participants in the research study included 90 students regularly attending the fourth grade in Korean Medicine College, of which 48 were male and 42 were female. Results: 1. Patient's preferences for female KMD (Korean Medicine Doctor) had the lowest response rate in Korean Medical Society. Preferences for male KMD were due to factors including comfort level, rationality, good training, and patient's preference. 2. Patient's preferences for female KMD had the highest response rate in Gynecology, and Pediatrics. On the other hand, patient's preferences for female KMD had the lowest response rate in the other 7 specialty subjects. 3. The reasons for gender discrimination against male KMD were lack of subtlety, lack of empathy, authoritative attitude, and lack of patient management skills. The reasons for gender discrimination, against female KMD were childcare burden, social prejudices, lack of physical strength, and housekeeping burdens. Conclusions: The study results indicated that there was a lower preference for female KMD than male KMD among the Korean Medical Society and in patients' consciousness. Male-centered culture of Korean Medical Society had no role in this finding, but masculine image for KMD jobs and work-family double burden for female KMD were important contributing factors.

안주애기박쥐(Vespertillio superans)의 시각에 의한 물체 식별 능력 (Visual Pattern Discrimination in the Oriental Discoloured Bat,Vespertilio superans)

  • 암수 2개체의 안주애기박쥐(Vespertillio superans)를 가지고 시각에 의한 물체 식별 능력의 실험을 실시하였다. 통제된 실험장치(two-chice apparatus)하에 이 박쥐들이 수직막대 모양이 표적과 이것과 면적을 같게한 원형 포적을 식별 가능한지의 결과, 면적이 같고 모양이 다른 두 표적은 전혀 식별하지 못했다. 이에 반하여 면적의 크기가 다소 차이를 갖게한 표적에서는 식별 능력에 있어서 유의 수준의 차이를 보였다. 계속된 실험 결과 같은 두 표적 간에 명암의 정도를 달리하였더니 명암이 근소한 차이(명도 2)를 제외하고는 쉽게 식별이 가능했다.

  • This study aimed to examine the sexual discrimination in the labor market. For this purpose, this study compared the work conditions, perception of sexual discrimination in the work place and job satisfaction by sex, and showed some effects of the independent variables on the two dependent variables; the perception of sexual discrimination in the work place and job satisfaction. The data were from KLFI(1995)'s National data and two OLS (Ordinary Least Square) Regression models were used. The results of this study were as follows. There were significant differences in the working conditions between two sex groups. The perception of sexual discrimination in the work place was a little low and the difference by sex was not found. The variables related to the work were more important to predict the perception of sexual discrimination in the work place rather than the general characteristics of the sample. The male workers were more satisfied with their work than the female workers. The satisfaction of their work was significantly different by the variables related to the work.
